What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

Has anyone else here ever felt like their hair growth has reached a plateau? You know, where it's not getting any shorter, but also not getting any longer? My hair is pretty long, well past my shoulders, and very healthy, but I feel like I've been stuck at the same length for a while. Sometimes I think it just won't get any longer!!! What are some hair care suggestions from those who have been there?

Re: What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

i think i've been there before. when my hair was at bra strap length it seemed to me as if it stayed at that length forever....but it only SEEMS that way to you:). just keep taking care of your hair the way you have been and be patient. i know i should be the last one telling somebody to be patient, cause God knows i'm very impatient. but when it comes to hair i got better:) also i learned not to check every day if my hair grew. i just left it alone and went about my business and wore it in a bun most of the time or two braids and then one day i was like WHOA....it did grow:):):)

Re: What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

I agree with NAY007...it took other people to make me realize my hair had reached past bra strap. It really is a good idea to not look at it everyday.

Re: What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

What styles did you bra strap girls do to achieve the length?

I'm trying to get there, but getting very frustrated!!! I hear a lot about buns, but I get concerned about breakage when I pull my hair back too much!

Re: What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

Yeah, last week I did a thread about wanting to give up because I feel as though my hair is stuck.

What I found was that most of these ladies feel like they hit a brick wall at some point.

Be encourgaged...you're not alone.

Re: What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

I have stuck hair. The front of my hair is shorter and seems like it won't grow past my chin.

The back grows near bra-strap, but just won't hit bra-strap! It's way past bra-strap when it's wet, but once it dries, it shrinks all the way back up over the bra-strap! I want my hair to touch my bra-strap without me tugging on it to do so!

Girl, me too!! When I pull on it it's just grazing the bottom...it pisses me off...I want it to just hang there by itself with the weight.

Yuh know! I'm up there tugging on it, thinking I'm doing something!

Re: What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

Maybe if we tug on it hard enough we will get past the bra strap.

Re: What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

ayanapooh,

i usually would wear a bun for a week straight to work, then the next week i wear two braids every day. at night i make a bun on top of my head and secure it with a small clip. or i sleep with a braid. but the bun is more comfortable. every morning i take the bun or the braid out and spray my hair with a leave in. then i add some oil and a little bit of gel for the front of my hair. then i comb it into the style that i'm wearing that week. i'm concerned about breakage too, because i heard several times that it is not good to put a rubber band at the same spot every day. but if i wear a bun ALL the time, that means exactly that. so that's why i switch up every week. i also never make the ponytail/bun too tight and give my hair a little room to breathe.
but i think the main factor in achieving length is no heat, lots of conditioning and moisturizing and protective styles. if you do all that, you WILL have longer hair in a couple of months, if you want or not!!!:) just remember to be patient girl.

Re: What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

By bra strap length, we are talking about the back strap, right? The one where your bra clasps in the middle? I just want to make sure we're all on the same page...

Re: What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

I am feeling this way today. The front of my hair never catches up to the back of my hair. The front touches the bottom of my chin. The back lays on my shoulder. I wish I could have shoulder length hair all over. I am going to do more wet sets and braid outs this fall/winter. Hopefully next summer I will have a nice lenght. What is the length which is between shoulder and bra strap called? Is it called mid back.

Re: What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

Try not to worry about it. Your hair will catch up with the rest of your hair in no time. Good luck.

Re: What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

Thanks. It is just frustrating when you hear about the bra strap length people. I am struggling to have flowing shoulder length hair.

Good question...

...I always though mid-back was lower than brastrap (like half-way down your back) and that the area b/t shoulder and brastrap would be between your shoulder blades? ...

Re: What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

I feel that way too sometimes. I have to see my mom and have her tell me if my hair is growing b/c I dont see her often so she would be the first one to notice. But I guess its like watching a pot boil. It aint much fun

maybe you reached your terminal length.

YuNg,

What's a "terminal length?" Do you believe that certain people are destined to only grow hair so long? If so, is that from experience or did you read it somewhere?

I'm not YuNq, but I do believe that everyone has a terminal length. Can't remember where I read it, but everyone's hair with proper care should be able to reach a certain length, but of course not everyone is going to have butt length or knee length hair. And dare I say not everyone can reach bra-strap length.

I'm 7.5 inches away so I'll tell you whether I can reach it 15 months from now.

I agree. In the past, I had coworkers remark that my hair was growing longer (it was a few inches past shoulder length like now) when I didn't even realize it had grown. It is always a pleasant surprise when it happens. I think others notice it more because they are more objective. We see the same images in the mirror everyday (even though the images are really changing). IMO, patience, sticking to our working hair regime and just going about our business will bring on the growth.

Re: What to do when you\'re stuck at the same length?

<font color="brown">You know, I think when you start to feel "stuck" at a certain length, it helps to stop focusing on length. In other words, don't worry about measuring your hair for a while, and don't worry about trying to estimate how much new growth you have . . .

Instead, you could set other goals for yourself. For instance, sometimes I set monthly goals just to see if they make a difference in the feel and condition of my hair. Here are some examples:
<ul type="square">
[*]Goal: Give hair a rest from heat and roller setting - - I air-dried my hair for a month straight - no heat whatsoever.
[*]Goal: New growth moisture and manageability - - I moisturized and braided my hair every night consistently for the last 4 weeks before my relaxer (large cornrows or large individual braids). And I kept it covered in the braids if I did not go anywhere on a given day.
[*]Goal: Healthy smooth ends - - I moisturized and oiled my ends every night, and I made sure they were proctected from the elements during the day.
[/list]
Setting these types of goals will help to take your mind off of growth issues. Instead you will be focusing more on the health and condition of your hair. It is also a morale boost when you get compliments about how shiny your hair looks, or how much thickness or body it has! The next thing you know, you have gone through another relaxer cycle or two, and your hair has added another few inches. Additionally, it will be in GREAT condition due to the "goals" that you accomplished (less breakage, healthy ends, and ultimately retained length

Shut your mouth. I can't believe that. The very idea goes against what we have been promoting on this web. We have been saying if you take care of your hair properly there is no limit to length it will grow. This is a serious question is there such a thing as terminal length. What does the committee think? Say it ain't so, I can't be destined to have just shoulder length hair. no, no, no.

Question: Isn't long hair hereditary?

Answer: Extremely long hair is hereditary, but hair that grows 12 inches to 24 or even 28 inches from the nape of the neck is normal. Ordinarily your hair can grow 6-10 inches a year and sometimes more. I believe afro textured hair can be that long or longer if you are re-educated on how to grow your hair long. My hair is 28 inches from the top of my crown going down the back. My hair has never grew this length until I was re-educated on how to care for my hair. What I thought was my original length was 8 inches from the nape of the neck. I'm sure that afro textured hair can grow longer than what was expected with a new out look on our hair.
