...I guess I should have thought of it myself, but I didn't. :ohwell:

This month I decided to take a length measurement (my first) and guess what?! My hair was a whooping 1.5 inches longer on the left side than the right.:mad::(

As if that wasn't bad enough it was also thicker with fewer split ends. My first thought was oh no, my hair's growing faster on one side. But that was easy to rule out. The new growth is exactly the same on both sides. Then I thought I must sleep on that side. Nope, I actually sleep on the longer side. Then while searching through one of the white chica's long hair sites there was the answer. She mentioned her jewelry causing undue stress on her tresses. I thought nawl, that can't be it and glance down at my engagement ring only to find a single strand of hair stuck in one of the prongs.:sad: My baby was tearing out my baby. :( I guess, sibling rivalry is ugly even among the inanimate. So, now I remove my e-ring before grooming.

Just thought I'd share.

Girl not only that, but if your nail/nails may have a chip or crack in them, file them asap, because they will take a few strands with them as well. Also necklaces can cause breakage/hairs being snatched out, I barely wear them now and only certain ones if I do. :look:

This has been a stunning discovery for me: I was breaking off a section on my left side just at the shoulder . I didn't understand why.

Then one day I was leaving work and hoisting my purse and briefcase onto my left shoulder. My hair yanked and I went 'ow!" then I realize I ALWAYS put straps on my left shoulder without regard for where my hair is.

I now try to pull my hair over to the right side..but it swings back over. I now do not carry things on my shoulder ..I opt for purse I carry at the elbow or forerm....and breifcases with handles.

I also notice my left belt can pull hair on the left side ...i always have to smooth my hair away from the seat belt in my car.

I am positive these were the reasons for breakage on my left side. :(

YEP...my nail kept ripping at my hair until I filed it. Also hang nails can do some damage. The worse is necklaces...I used to find long strands..many of them in my necklace every time I wore my hair down.
Oh and let's not forget my incident with the zipper...watch those as well.

If anyone had told me this stuff before it happened to me I wouldn't have believed it. 1.5 inches was a hard way to learn this lesson. :cry2:

ITA! I am a nail person. I used to bite them when I was younger.

Now that I am on my hair journey, if I get a split in my nail that lil' sucker has to go by any means necessary. Like my nails. LOVE MY HAIR.

Jewelry is the same thing. If it rips hair that sucker has to go in the jewelry box unless my hair is up. Even then, it is still a big MAYBE.

**giant lightbulb illuminates over my head**

I feel like a huge moron! I color and relax, but couldn't figure out why my right side was in such sorry shape! I stopped wrapping, tried different rollers, tried moisturinzing that side more, with no positive changes. It has to be the big ol'back-breaking tote I carry to work everyday.

I always take off my enagement ring and wedding band before I wash my hair. The diamond on my engagement ring sits up high and it is way too easy for hair to keep wrapped around it and get torn out.:(

I don't put my rings back on until my hair is combed, leave in and butter applied, and either back in a braid or up in a bun.

Girl this is the truth! And even dangly earings!

Combs too ya'll. I knew about seamless combs and I have one, but I couldn't find one in "rake" size. The same chica's site recommended taking your fav comb and filing (w/ a nail file) the seams off. I did it and it worked like a charm. Who'd have guessed?

Yes, indeed! I hate when that happens  b/c my nails can really do some slicing!

My wedding rings and baby pull my left side out.. the front of my left head is so short compared to my right. My left hip is the only side I can support her heavy tail on. She even pulls at it if I wear it back in a bun! ARGH!!

Could you tell us the name of this site?

Wow, I never thought about any of these things causing breakage before!

ARGH! I hate that! When I'm reaching for my seatbelt I tend to also grab a chunk of my hair. Then when I reach over to buckle it, I rip a few strands of my hair out.

Isn't it great to have that problem of hair so long that you snag it on your purse on sit back on it when you're driving?;) Now I make sure I have a silver duckbill clip in the car at all times or a butterfly clip to twist my hair up when I'm driving. Also, sometimes when I take off my glasses, the little area between the earpiece and lens snags my temple hair. It's really wreaked havoc on that area.

So funny to see this thread this morning. I just got into my office. Sat down, took my sunglasses off the top of my head (had them pushed back) and saw a long strand that had been RIPPED OUT by the little silver hinge on the side of my sunglasses. I sat there pissed for about 30 seconds before I moved on!

I have found that even certain clothing fabrics snag my ends... if im wearin a wool sweater/coat or even some of my regular polos I but my hair up in a clip or at the end of the day there will be little pieces of hair caught in my sweater...
