I can finally, after several years of doing my own hair, say that I can do an authentic Dominican rollerset/blowout. I get the exact results as my stylist, however it still takes forever.
I am currently working on getting my rollers in faster.
still trying to master the roller set. (very very difficult on curly hair) also experimenting with ways to tie my hair up at night so that it looks the way i want it to in the morning. (i think i got this one finally!)
I have to work on getting my rollers in quicker too. I'm trying to get the rollers tight using clips instead of the snap on cover. Luckily enough for me I'm sticking to my bun challenge so I'm not doing rollersets anytime soon.

Swirl, are you holding your hair taut between your fingers when you wrap it around the rollers?

i try to. either hair is coming off of the roller or i can't get the clip in the right place causing the roller to unroll or not be tight enough. i recently bought some magnetic rollers with the snap cover but i have not tried to roller set with them yet. (i still have at least 4-5 more days left out of my dominican blowout /images/graemlins/smile.gif ) for real tho...i don't know if its even worth all the effort. for $20 + tip i can get someone else to do it!
I'm trying to master the blow-out part of a dom. blowout when you use the round brush and blowdrier. It seems like no matter how many times I go over a section with the round brush, I can't seem to get it smooth enough so that there are no tangles when I run my fingers through it , unless I try again the day after /images/graemlins/confused.gif
Curly, your blowdrying technique may not be the problem; it may actually be the blowdryer itself. It took me a few months to figure that out. Then I finally broke down and bought the blower that the dominican stylists use.
Dreem, I never thought that I'd master a rollerset either, but I did finally get it. Don't give up.
I've been SO LAZY lately. But when I get back in the saddle, I'll try
-washing my hair LOOSE in the shower without massive tangling (with a wide-toothed bone comb and acidifier)
-rollersetting at home with coconut oil for shine
-PCJ lye touch ups at home
My last salon visit was just too annoying. I was mentally criticizing each step of the service. I'm entering another do-it-yourself phase.
A Doobie - I think I'm going to give up though. Its so disappointing after sitting under the dryer for 2 HOURS and then having pretty curls only to see stick straight hair after wrapping it. /images/graemlins/mad.gif
I bought the Turbo 1500. The picture doesn't show the concentration nozzle that you attach, but it should come with one.
I have it rigged to give off a little more power. I have had this dryer for about 6 years and have had no problems. If I ever have to replace it, I'll go with a Solano.
Like most said rollersetting and blowing my hair out, once I can do that I will be self-sufficient in straight styling. I'd also like to learn how to cornrow.
I really want to learn how to do pincurls...every single time I try to do them, I end up wearing a ponytail the next day...I guess it'll be like me learning how to rollerset...lots and lots of practice!

I thought that only happened to me! /images/graemlins/blush.gif
I'm trying to master doing a roller set without having to used additional heat (flat-iron). I don't mind the sitting under the dryer part - but I would like to eliminate using a flat or curling iron afterwards to smooth out the curls. Next time I plan on wrapping when I remove the rollers and sitting under the dryer for an additional 15 min. I don't know if my hair will cooperate though.
to the doobie ladies...(haha)
I have the same thing happen to me if I dont use a good amount of setting lotion (I like the elasta qp foam stuff for cheap and design essentials for spending). When I use that, I will still get body and curls left...if not then it will barely even have a bend to it. I like my hair to be light and airy but at the same time I like some body better than stick straight so I go ahead and use setting lotion along with a leave in.
