I used to only use 4-6 because I was afraid of heat damage but that was only leaving me with the blown-out look. After doing a little research I realized that one setting wasn't going to cut it for my hair. Now I do my halo first (nape, above ears, and front) first because the hair there is finer, silkier, and easier to straighten but more prone to heat damage and breakage. I do those sections on a 5 and then I do my crown on a 7-8. I have dense but fine type 4 natural hair.

There's a thread from 2006 entitled: Maxiglide Temperature Conversion. It gives the temp for settings 1-10. I would post a link, but I'm on my iPhone
I'm relaxed and only use 4 or 5 but my daughter is a natural 4a,4b. On her I use 7-8 on her nape, above ears, and front. For all the rest I stay on 9-10 moreso 9 though. I use to be terrified of flight ironing but with the Maxiglide it's a whole different story. Doesn't feel like I'm damaging my hair with the steam and my hair and hers seems to looooove it! I LOVE MY MAXI!! It's amazing!
I would say to experiment on a small section first. Start off with a low temperature, and watch for smoking, sizzling, or product evaporation. At this point, your iron is too hot for your hair. Adjust the heat so that it is within your hair's comfort range. You'll discover what temp is good for your hair thru trial and error. My maxi is set between 3 and 4, because that's the point at which my hair straightens without being damaged.
