What Products Will You Use In September?

Shampoo: Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl and Shine Shampoo
Deep Conditioner: Shea Moisture Yucca and Plantain Anti-Breakage Strengthening Masque
Leave-in(s): Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie; SM Coconut & Hibiscus Hold and Shine Moisture Mist
Gel: Softee (for extra dry hair) Aloe Vera Curl Activator Gel
Since using these, I noticed I've started retaining length and don't have nearly as much breakage. Interestingly (and this wasn't my main goal, but since it came with the territory...:look:), I see more curl definition.

I seriously do not understand Shea Moisture products sometimes. I used this masque on my hair when I had a bunch of new growth and it softened the new growth and the previously relaxed hair. Get a fresh relaxer and it sucks all the moisture out of it :ohwell:

I have a guess (I'm natural, so please take it with a grain of salt): When you had your fresh relaxer and (neutralizing) shampoo, your hair may have been stripped of moisture. Though strength is important (especially for relaxed hair), so is moisture. Without it, the protein can make hair brittle. Judging by the stated purpose (strengthening) and ingredients, this masque is more of a protein conditioner. Had you followed up with a moisturizing conditioner afterwards?

I didn't follow with a moisturizing conditioner afterwards because I never had to... I just wanted it to work the same as before I relaxed :lol: I understand what you're saying but it even went on differently... Like I put it on my hair and instead of being the creamy lotion-y conditioner it was before it came in contact with my hair and it was more "firm". I used it twice now over the course of a week to see if that very thing you are talking about was the problem... Not sure. It's quite possible. I even conditioner washed prior to using it. In any case, though, I want a conditioner that's going to work consistently and the only product they make that seems to work all the time is the Kids Detangler. I think I'll just stick with that.

@CodeRed

What I've learned is that hair has different needs at different times. If you were into a stretch, maybe your hair needed the strengthening and anti-breakage properties of this conditioner and thats why you got good results. I think the only time a product will work the same every time is if the hair is freshly clarified and chelated.

Do you wash with a chelating poo a week or so after your relaxer TU? I always do this to get rid of calcium deposits.

My own experience with this DC was positive but it was during a deep stretch.

Maybe it only works in deep stretches. I used it after shampoo both times after my relaxer and it made my hair hard. I've used other conditioners after a relaxer, they softened/fortified my hair and continued to do so up until I got my next relaxer. I think that's why I'm giving up on this one... I've used conditioners in the past that worked no matter if I just got a chemical service or not. I might be spoiled :lol:. That and I'm trying to make my regimen as simple as possible... before joining the hair board I didn't think about switching up conditioners depending on a chemical service...You only do so to prep your hair with a protein treatment, then you get a chemical service and you either include a protein treatment in that service or you do one in the first wash. After that I'd get a good conditioner (either a salon one or a good store bought one), generally more on the moisturizing side, and I could use it until I got my next touch up. There wasn't an absolute need to switch up if there was a lot of new growth and the only reason I'd deviate is if I saw something I wanted to try out. With this SM masque (using it as a protein treatment) I'd only be using it a handful of times a year and so it would expire before I got a chance to use up the whole thing. That's why I'm going back to before I tried to do all natural products all the time. The only "unnatural" thing I had in my arsenal was VO5 and maybe a couple of others. If my actual hair was natural, I think SM would be fine. But I'm not. I'm a relaxed head and my hair being the shortest it's ever been (not by choice) the whole time I've been using all natural products is telling me that they aren't my thing. A lot of them make my hair feel nice sometimes but as for protecting hair that is chemically treated, I don't think it's for me and I don't need to add 150 steps/products to my life to try to make fetch happen. Hair is dead and when it's chemically treated that means it's compromised. All that can be done once it's out of the scalp is to protect it. A lot of "bad" ingredients do that for hair and I think my hair appreciates that.

That was long winded :lol:

I'm 1/2 way through my SD's Destination Hydration and more than 1/2 way through Hairveda's Acai Phyto Berry and were just on the 11th of September, so I know I'll be pulling out HV's Moist 24/7.

I may have to pull out something else me through the month.:look:

Finished up Kiwi & Lime VO5. I have x3 back ups left.

- GVP Conditioning Balm
- Tresemme Perfectly Undone Conditioner
- Shea Moisture Yucca and Plantain Anti-Breakage Masque

All three put in daughter's stash to help spread her cholesterols.

Going to incorporate shampooing back in this month. I've been oiling my hair well for hours before shampooing and it's working out much better than just straight shampoo. Will be using the family shampoo. Going to try out Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat as a deep conditioner next. Still using oils.

@rileypak Thank you for the update. You are right, that ain't very economical. What were your thoughts on it?

@AgeinATL
I mixed it with distilled water, aloe vera juice, and a few splashes of coconut vinegar to a fairly thin consistency (not mud wash thin but definitely not thick).
I was a bit freaked out upon application because it made my hair feel hard while I was applying it plus it was still a bit gritty but I rolled with it. Slapped on a plastic cap and wrapped my head in a towel for 2.5 hours. Rinsing it out went smoothly. Nothing clung to my hair or scalp. Hair came out super fluffy and soft. I was really surprised given how it did when I applied. My post wash detangling was nonexistent. Combs slid right through even before I applied leave ins. I'll see how it holds up during the week but my hair seemed to like it though.
