The Suncoat gel does not have a pleasant smell -- think fabric starch burning in rubber covered by mint. I am still learning to use it, but the hold is medium-soft (very light gel cast) and does not irritate my ears (kept it off my scalp). You definitely need a moisturizer underneath it, but it is non-drying. I don't rake or shingle, so I refuse say whether it works for that.

Thanks for the review. @Sharpened, Andalou makes a natural gel that gets very good reviews. Not cheap, though! I can't trial it because shipping is too much. I heard some Whole Foods might carry it. NOTE: They make a strong hold gel and a lighter hold gel/cream. I'm interested in the gel/cream. If I ever get it, I'll try to remember to let you know how it fares.

Sorry I just saw this @CodeRed
It is very thick and coating. I tried to use it as a DC, as it is recommended to use it that way and I hated the application. I'm going to try it as a rinse out under running water instead or toss it because I got it for $6. (An entire liter of it)

Thank you!

I think I saw where someone else said it was really thick and coating and that was one of the reasons I took it off my wish list.
