I don't understand why some vitamin brands are better than others?

Frequently, I read about women who switch from one brand of biotin to another because the original brand was ineffective. However, the new brand worked.

Why does this happen? What makes some brands better than others?

wow, so many things (you may have to google for great detail) but many things can...... impurities (often quality based), ingredients, percentages of those ingredients, fillers used (harder for body to break down, pass thru system etc.), pill form (again harder for body to break down...limits/slows absorption)

Well for me, I compare vitamins by the mcg/percentage and how many I have to take to get the full serving. For example, I was taking some $42.00 hair vitamins with 6000mcg of biotin , but I had to take 4 vitamins a day to get the full amount, although that is a high amount I did not notice any change in my hair..... so now I'm back to my $15.00 vitamins with 2000 mcg of biotin and I only need to take 2...... but the cheaper vits I now take have other supplements in it that the more expensive ones did not have, and that's what makes the difference, you need a combination of other vitamins also, and they are a time released formula.
