I have been relaxing my own hair for a few years now because I have had many problems with stylists in the past. I have recently noticed that my hair in the back, near and around my nape area is thinner and weaker than the rest of my hair. I have also noticed this problem with some other women as I looked through their photo albums. I am starting to think that overprocessing may be the culprit but I am not sure. I take special care of the hair in this area so it is just as long as the rest of my hair just thinner and weaker. I have noticed that on the back of most relaxers the recommended application time is from 9 to 17 minutes, depending on your hair type. Maybe it is just me, but I can never get the relaxer in my hair and smoothed it out and let it rest for a few minutes in less than 9 to 17 minutues. It usually takes me at least 23 to 26 minutes for the entire process. Since I usually start in the back at my nape area I am starting to belive that the hair in that area is getting overprocessed. I have gone to several stylist in the past, however, and if I am not mistaken I don't remember any of them having the relaxer in and out of my hair in under 17 minutes. (However I am quite sure that it never took them up to 26 minutes either.) I am just curious if any one is experiencing the same problems that I am experiencing with their nape area or the area that you start your relaxer. If so how long do you leave your relaxer in? And for those that aren't having any problems or for those who get your hair relaxed at a salon, I would like to know how long it takes for you or your stylist to relax your hair? Any ladies that are going to the salon soon to have their hair relaxed, it would be great if you could time your stylist and post the results back here.
