What is it about Castor Oil

If it wasn't for this board I wouldn't even look twice at a bottle of castor oil. What is in that stuff that's so good for promoting hair growth?

Let a sistah know!!!

Hi LD,

I used to HAVE to drink it once or twice a year as a kid to "purge" my system. It's also a great natural laxative. When my hair was natural it was used during braiding. It really is a great scalp stimulant and does promote growth. But you can't use too much, since its texture is so viscious and the smell so intense. I didn't care for the oil then. But I've got a green beer bottle full of the unadulterated oil that mom sent me years ago and I never bothered to use until now. If you want some, I'll send it to you. You can add a little of it to vaseline to make your own pomade, or make this oil stimulant (if you're not into the strong smell):

Natural Scalp and Hair Stimulation Oil:

<ul type="square"> One Teaspoon Sweet Almond Oil

One Teaspoon Castor Oil

10 Drops Essential Oil of Fir Needle (Abies spp)

OR Essential Oil of Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) [/list]

Mix the Sweet Almond Oil together with the Castor Oil in a small bowl and then add no more than 10 drops of Essential Oil. Mix with your fingers and then rub vigorously into your scalp, concentrating on areas where hair is thinning.

that sounds good Laela.

Diva when i was small my mother always used castor oil on all of our hair and skin. Castor oil is also a great wash out. Im using the Black castor made by Tropic Isle and i believe that one is a miracle worker /images/graemlins/smile.gif /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Diva/images/graemlins/wave.gif

Here's a link from our forum discussing castor oil. Some added a link explaining all the propertied and uses of castor oil

hth,

I have a question, if its pure castor oil can u still drink it like flaxseed and primrose oil? I trying to put together a regime

LD,

I've been using the SherryLove jojoba, castor oil, rosemary mix and I've been getting the "growing itchies". It was a real easy mix to put in my regime because I'd already had a jojoba/rosemary oil mix &amp; I just added some castor oil to it! /images/graemlins/smile.gif I got my castor oil at the drug store very inexpensive and lasts for a long time since it's so thick!

Ladies as always /images/graemlins/notworthy.gif your help is always appreciated thank you very much /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ms K don't even get me started girl. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif Growing itchies!?!?! /images/graemlins/shocked.gif Ooooooh good luck. I'm so tempted to try it out.

Laela thank you for the offer, I'm seriously thinking of taking you up on it. /images/graemlins/smile.gif I'll PM you.

Thanks ladies

/images/graemlins/smile.gifthat's the truth! When I was in transition, I caught myself scratching my wig so hard once, it was shifting from side to side.. I was /images/graemlins/blush.gif when I looked up and saw someone in the office looking at me.

i mix the castor oil with some cheap conditioner (superdrug's intensive henna treatment - the 475ml for £1.79)leave on my scalp for at least an hour, rinse and style as usual. I think if you have thick 3C/4a (or even 4B) hair it really helps with the moisture.

London Diva, you can buy the pure castor oil in west indian shops. I dont really find the scent to be foul, just very nutty. I am thinking of melting it with coconut oil (the kind that 'sets' when dry) so that i can use it in my twists or bantu knots (chinee bumps). I use a little bit of castor oil in my hair, and it goes a loooooong way.

In jamaica they use it for a laxative (wash out) before you go to school for the new terms (or they did when i was younger). People also use it for sore muscles and all that.

Its really a good oil, though, and i am glad that i rediscovered it.

P.S. not wanting to encourage pjitis - but for the uk naturals (or even permies) do give superdrug's henna intensive treatment (the 475 ml one) a try. It is really moisturizing, smells good and doesnt break the bank!

Thank you for the link. I will print it off. I think i am going to have to get a lever arch file and keep all this value information. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
I'm a SO glad that the sheet is helping you stay more focused. Like a little kid, the brighter the colours in my vitamin chart the better I feel as it too has helped me be a LOT more consistent with my vitamin regimen. It's not that hard to keep focused by logging into my laptop everynight just to update is as I'm online everyday anyway.

That's a good idea, canuck! /images/graemlins/up.gifI do have 3B/C hair.. the kind that soaks up moisture like a sponge! I'll try that as well. Thanks.

canuck, you mean i can use superdugs henna treatment on my relaxed hair??? /images/graemlins/shocked.gif

yeah, its really brilliant. Its like a creamy conditioner, and it really shouldnt harm your hair. It is supposed to be good for processed hair, and it is dead cheap. My friend uses it for her hair, and she is a 4bi permie. She finds that it keeps her hair soft(er) and actually counts it as the reason for her touch ups to be extended by two weeks.

Its cheap as chips too, and it will ast you about 4-5 applications.

A caveat though, be careful to wash it out of your hair, as it can stain towels something fierce.

It is realllllly good stuff for the price.

This oil is thick /images/graemlins/shocked.gif It's supposed to be thick right /images/graemlins/confused.gif OK I guess thick is the wrong word, heavy is a better way to describe it.

Canuck

Thanks for the tip. I saw this the other day and it was very cheap. I guess mixing it with something else would make an OK product much better. I've found this to be the case a few times with different products. You wouldn't believe the difference 10 drops of oil could make to ORS Carrot Oil. I'll look into picking up the conditioner and see if it helps with the extending of the relaxer for me. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Diva , yes the oil is very thick oops I mean heavy /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Madison it's so heavy I can only see me using this stuff 2 -3 times a week tops. Is there anyone here that applies this stuff daily.

I must admit though that my hairline is a little 'fuzzier' since I started applying the prefectiv balm 2x daily. /images/graemlins/smile.gif It's only been just over a week.

er, no... i couldn't use castor oil everyday. I think that you will find that the effects of the castor oil lasts a day or two (i find that, but then, my hair is natural). A little goes a looooooong way.

Hi LD,

Mix it with some avocado oil or something to loosen it. Olive oil is good too. For very cold weather I use it pure just tapping it on my ends and scalp and massage into the scalp then brush out to the ends for easy distribution- using a paddle brush.

LondonDiva,
I use the castor oil daily, but it's funny because once I put it on my scalp and rub it in, it soaks in (or goes somewhere) really quick. With my scalp, hair, it doesn't just sit on top.

I am not sure what is in it but I know that it has helped to moisturize my hair and THICKEN my hair. I mix it with Coconut Oil and use it in my hot oil treatments. I recall someone posting that Marvin states that using a castor oil based hair oil at least 2 weeks BEFORE a touch up will soften new growth and prevent it from breaking. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
