What is going on with my roots?

Ladies can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong. I use Hennalucent semi-permanent hair color in bark brown. It comes out dark which I love but the problem is with my roots. They are not dark. They come out a lighter shade of brown. I shampoo my hair once then put the color on to make sure that I don't have any type of residue on my hair. What do you guys think is going on.

You have grey hair to start with?
Apply the color to just the roots first it is resistant do to it being the newest. It will take longer for the hair to process, half way through process pull the color through to the rest of the hair.put a plastic cap on while processing to keep heat in to open up the hair and allow the color to soak in.
