What happens if I stop taking vitamins

When I reach my goal length I planned to stopping most of my hair vitamins such as biotin...but I was wondering if anyone experienced breakage from a sudden stop of consuming vitamins geared towards healthy hair..for example does the hair lose its sheen or becomes brittle??? I would love to know...thanks-Melissa

Good question. I've been wondering about the same thing and considering scaling my vitamin regimen down after I reach my goal to just a multi (for overall health) and MSM (to make sure my new long hair doesn't just shed back to my current length

).

Hopefully some folks who have tried this can give more feedback...

i dont think your hair can break off because its already outside of the hair shaft, vitamins are internal nourishment and once its grows away from the root its up to you to avoid brekage by not overcombing, overprocessing, moisturizing, etc. Now as far as shedding goes maybe there might be a bit more that usual. Brittle hair comes from not taking care of your self all together (i.e not eating at all, not eating foods with nutrients, stress maybe?). Just take a multivitamin for your overall health...I noticed that I acheived the same amount of growth as people who take biotin and all those other seperate vitamins and I just take one multi. But it totally depends on the person.

This is why I don't take my multi-vitamin every single day. I'm afraid my body will get used to it, if that makes any sense.

I stopped taking my vits for medical reason and I lived to tell. Seriously, my hair has not really suffered because of it. I did go through vit withdrwl though, kept looking in that cabinet!!!

i agree with ayeshia that the shedding might increase if you stop taking the vitamins, but that's pure speculation. if you don't want to continue them, i agree that you could take a good multi, make sure that your diet is on point and drink lots of water.

after taking vitamins consistently for over two years now, i believe my hair is growing in thicker. i can't say that they've really made it grow any faster over the long haul though. i've had spurts where it grew maybe 1/2" a month vs. 1/4" a month (big whoop dee doo

) but nothing really earth shattering. so i'm taking them for quality rather than quantity. i also take them because my diet isn't always the best...

It's my understanding that supplements just change the quality and texture. Thus, the hair will grow but the quality maybe worse if you really needed the supplements. If the supplements were just extras, you shouldn't notice a difference.

A good multivitamin should do the trick after you reach your hair goal. It's always been good to take one anyway regardless if your trying to grow your hair or not. I would think that as long as you continue to take good care of your hair you should be alright. Just because you stop taking your hair growth vitamins doesn't mean you have to stop doing your hair care regime. That's just my opinion, but who really knows for sure. For me my hair has always grown w/o vitamins, but my overall health has benefited from the vitamins since I've joined this board. Once I reach my hair goal I plan to stop taking everything, but my msm and multivitamin.
