What does a strand of your hair look like?

My hair strand has some sections that are thinner than others. I've always figured this was because of the natural curl, but am I wrong? Do others also notice these varying widths within a single strand?

i saw a strand in my hair that was completely straight but it was thinner and shorter than my other hair. Most my strands are thick almost thick like a dog's wiskers

Mine does that too so I examined it very closely and the thin parts correspond to where my hair is curling and the thick parts is where it isn't.

It depends. I think it is all a matter of which part of the growth cycle a particular hair is in at the time. It also could be due to a combination of healthier and weaker hairs as well.

That reminded me of an article in last month's InStyle. There was an article about assessing hair damage and one test said to compare the width of the root of a single strand with the width of the tip. The greater the difference the more damage because the ends of the hair or older and have been more exposed to hazards. This causes the cuticle to wear away.
