I am 6 weeks post and am realizing that I need to start slow with my stretches. I wanted to go till the end of the month. I don't think so! I have been washing my hair on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Last night when I washed my hair, my new growth really showed up and showed out! :hair: I know this is a sign of growth, but I'm afraid that my hair will start to break if I wait too long to relax. I've searched the threads and see the no-combing method discussed alot. Won't that cause my new growth to pack to my head, leading to breakage as well? No combers please help me.:pullhair:

I only comb my NG when Im rollerseting freshly washed hair that I have applied my leave-ins to. During the week I keep it soft and tangle free by finger combing my ends th rid myself of shed hair and applying castor/rosemary oil to my ng and scalp. A day or two before my weekly wash I use mane and tail detangler and finger comb thru my hair starting from the ends on up to the ng.

When i keep my new growth straight and oiled it doesn't mat to my scalp. It only does that when i've air-dried and my hair is dry.

Finger combing? And I tried using castor oil and it seemed too sticky. I had to rewash my hair. How long do you stretch charmtreese

I find that my hair does best when I stretch between 12 - 16 weeks. I have gone longer but, my hair is soo fine that stretching beyond 16 weeks can lead to breakage regardless of how careful I am.

With castor oil a little goes a long ways. I normally start off with a drop or two to messsage ng. If Im far into my stretch I may need more. However, I always start off with a small amount and add more from there. I find that adding rosemary eo to castor oil helps a lot with softening ng and scalp stimulation.

If you don't comb your hair AT ALL it will break! there was a recent post when somebody actually said that, she took the low mani too far (i believe that was the name of the thread) and when she did comb, a lot of hair was out.

So, if you want to try this no-comb thing, make sure that at least you finger comb or something, cause at the end, it will happend as we say in spanish : will cost you more the water than the vegetables.

I have rosemary eo and I've put some in a jojoba/ evoo mixture along with lavendar and clove bud. Do you think it'll work with that? My hair is fine as well. I think I'm just gone stick with 10 week stretches.

Currently I stretch 17/18 weeks at a time. This allows me only 3 relaxers per year. I wash 2x's per week and I only comb my ng on wash days as well. Right before I get ready to wash, I apply s-curl and amla oil to my ng, in sections. I comb and detangle these sections, and then put each in a twist. Once that's done, I put on a plastic shower cap and pre-poo with the oil mixture as well. During the week on non-wash days, I simply finger part to apply moisutizer and style in a bun or flat-twist-cornrows.

You know what Taina. I was thinking about that too. I think Instead of jumping on all of these band wagons and stick with what I've been doing. I will just incorporate what I've learned about moisture and babying my ends.

I agree with the previous posters. I hardly use a comb because they will rip my hair straight from the scalp no matter how gentle I am. I only deal with my ng when I'm doing some sort or set on wet hair. I rely solely on my fingers to rid my air dried hair of tangles and knots. My ng starts to get unruly around the time I relax (16 wks) and will only loc at my scalp when I bun while it's damp. :nono:

When my hair was relaxed, I can't imagine I would ever have been comfortable not combing the growth. The relaxed hair has a way of making you forget how thick the roots are so that when you have to deal with them they feel like a major feat. What's more, I could never imagine not combing my natural hair unless it was braided, so again, that's another reason I can't imagine not combing new growth. So I'm not sure how relaxed heads do it. I don't think I'd be brave to do it. I'd use S Curl on new growth and comb it section by section and then bun. I might be able to risk not touching it if I'm baggying, for a few days, but I couldn't do the no comb thing for more than a week.

When natural, as long as my hair is braided or twisted, I can manage not to comb it even when redoing my hair. I undo, finger comb then rebraid/retwist. Fingercombing a small section (coz I only undo one at a time) is not as tedious as if I had to deal with a whole head of hair. So fingercombing is really just a clever way to indulge in HIH syndrome.

I'm 23 weeks post and when I detangle in the shower, under warm running water with the hair drenched in oil (pre-poo), I usually don't have to comb through the new growth because the slip is amazing. The knots and tangles just melt out with the combination of water pressure and oil/conditioner slippage. Plus I don't let the hair tangle in between washes. So basically, I just dentagle with a wide tooth comb from the ends up to about a half an inch from the demarcation line. And sometimes if I know that my hair is particularly tangly, I will comb through the line of demarcation and NG once or twice with no problem thanks to major slip, because I don't want dreads. This is my experience. But generally speaking I believe when people are talking about not combing during a stretch they mean leaving the NG alone, and this is not limited to just detangling/combing. I hope that makes sense.

I think one of the most important things to learn during a stretch is how to detangle in a way that won't lead to problems. This usually means having lots of slip---so that's one thing I would ensure. Making sure the hair is constantly well moisturized is very important too, otherwise avoiding the comb is only going to go so far in terms of keeping the hair on your head. Be very gentle and patient.

I keep hearing about using s-curl. I'm a little skeptical about it. And I can't get the bunning down. I know I'm not going to make this 10 week stretch. I want to call my stylist now and make an appointment for Tuesday. And to think, I thought about going natural. That is so obviously not going to happen.
