Hi Bettle,

I have it and it's a book that is good to keep as a reference. It talks about coloring, relaxing and helping with damage, etc. It's a book that's mainly targeted towards relaxed hair and it has a chapter on natural hair. Shamboosie is really into Nexxus and Dudley products for healing damaged hair and maintaining it. I believe with every hair book out there, you can always get some useful things out of them. Some things you may or may not agree with and that's when you just use what works and discard the rest.

Hi Bett1e,

I have that book and I like it a lot. It has a lot of great information in it. I'm not too crazy about his views on internet hair boards, but overall it's a good book. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have it too, and I really like it. It's a good book to have in your arsenal, as another poster said. For me it's a keeper. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think that this is an excellent information/reference book. Because it's primary slant is for ladies with relaxed hair, though, I gave it to my sister.

What I found particularly valuable about the book was the way that it clearly delineated the differences between lye and no-lye relaxers. My sister's hair was severely damaged from continuous salon applications of no-lye relaxers. She began to follow the program that Shamboosie outlined in his book and in six to eight weeks her hair looked dramatically different.

It was no longer dry and discolored. The shedding stopped and the patches that she had developed began to fill in.

Although I don't agree with everything that he says, I think that Shamboosie gives a great overall comprehensive view of effective hair care.

Hi Justice4alw,

I found that to be very valuable information as well. Since reading his book I switched to a lye formula and it has made a world of difference for my hair. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Wait a minute, is this the Shamboosie book? Where can I get it. well, actually I have a Barnes and Noble gift certificate for $20. Is this book better than the Cathy Howser Book? what ever I purchase I would like to get my money's worth...

Shoot, now I have to add that to my list of things to buy. You ladies are putting me in the poor house /images/graemlins/drowning.gif

Thanks everyone. I think I will order it. Since I am relaxed, it sounds perfect. Unfortunately, Nexxus and Dudley products do nothing for my hair though.

Shamboosie's techniques and advice will work well with any quality products. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

What does he say about internet hairboards, Pebs?

I am not Pebbles but he basically bashes them....says that the users posting on them are not professionals, they are so 'they' can't really give good hair advice. I am trying to find the page so I can quote him exactly....

You won't regret buying this book, Rayne. Like someone else posted, he also talks about no lye relaxers and the damage they can cause. He also talks about how to deal with no lye underprocessed hair. If I remember correctly, you and I share this problem. A definite keeper. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Overall I think it is an excellent book...well written, nice photos and excellent chapter on coloring but it certainly does cater more to the relaxed ladies.

I disagree with him on a few points one being what he says about internet hair boards. I think many women on here can testify to all the knowledge they have learned from this website as well as others...they have learned things that they just would not have learned from so-called professional hair stylists.

He says ((pg 70)

HAIR HORRORS & WACKY REMEDIES FROM CYBERSPACE DOUBLE CLICK ON FAR FETCHED

"...people are passing along 'wacky' remedies and sharing homemade concoctions thinking that they are helping each other out. Most are just ordinary folk, although some of them are hair care professionals, most are not. They are mothers, college coeds, career women and others who chat 'in disguise' using pseudonyms such as 'Dominican Girl', 'Onelove', 'KJ', 'Pookipooh' 'Weaverbeliever' and my favorite 'Anonymous'. Then there are those that I like to call the 'undiscovered kitchen chemists' They are the ones that share their weird hair-care concoctions on-line. You've got to love these lovely ladies of color. They try hard, but don't be fooled into using that stuff on your hair. You could end up as bald as I am!"

He has a few quotes mocking us:
"..if you stand in the shower and allow hot water to just run on your head for 20-30 minutes, it will speed up your growth of your hair. If that doesn't work, oil the ends of your hair."

"For daily moisture I spray my hair every day with warm water"

"I heard that there is a pill consisting of 2,000,000 mgs that promises to grow six inches of hair in six weeks. Does anyone know where I can buy it? (Now that's really funny)"

he goes on to say "....be wise and always seek advice from hair care professionals."

I disagree when he says that the only purpose of water is to move product and does nothing for your hair.

He contradicts himself when he says that he doesn't believe in the one size fits all approach to hair care but says Humectress is the "Magic Potion" for everyone.

And I don't understand when he says that when you relax your hair it looses it's ability to hold a curl with a roller set. My hair never did that when it was relaxed. It's natural curl maybe but it sounds like he is saying hold a curl from a roller.

Ok sorry to disect the book like that but like Hairfanatic said I also think that with each book I have read I have learned a little from each. I don't know if there is one that I totally agree with 100%.

Valleygirl,

I also disagree with him. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Shamboosie learned a thing or two from the sites. If the remedies, etc are as wacky as he says...why is he spending time viewing them? /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

When I was in college, in the 90's, humectress was suppose to be THE product. I have 4b hair and it did nothing. What he is trying to say is that you need moisture. Howse's Dew is great for moisture.

Bett1e:

It's like you read my mind or something! I just found that book on Monday on Barnes and Noble.com when I was doing a search for MSM and decided to look for new black haircare books.

I printed out the page and put it on my list of books to purchase, but since you already did a post and I probably already know the info he talks about, I think I will just save my money.

I've purchased Cathy's 2 books, Carolyn Gray's and Lisa Akbari and I didnt really learn anything Earth-shattering from them, so I will just rely on my favorite hair board. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I bought the book because I just couldn't resist. I usually just resell the books on amazon if I find them not to my liking.

AZJeepGirl
The book is very detailed and packed with stuff. It is an excellent book to have as a reference.
If you color or relax he highly reccomends Textures and Tones (which ladies like myself and Tracy and SVT also use)

If you can find it used on Amazon then I say go ahead and buy it.

But if you want to save your $$$ you know the gals on LHCF are always happy to share info even though it may be 'wacky' and 'far-fetched' /images/graemlins/drunk.gif

thnaks for the review guys, i just ordered a copy! i am making up a hiar library, this will be book 6! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ditto Pebbles /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was /images/graemlins/mad.gif when he out right dissed hair boards, because I know he hasn't been here to even say that mess. And I know his view is not 100% right because he so praised the Nexxus line which belonged more in the bin than it did on my bathroom shelf. Do you know just how much profectiv's I could have bought with the same money I used to buy 2 bottle of Nexxus Junk /images/graemlins/mad.gif

Very good memory. I've tried the pull through method to get that hair straightened but no luck /images/graemlins/frown.gif It is more manageable (sp?) though so I can at least wrap my hair. I'm actually starting to like the way it looks (texturized) but since it's only in some places it looks ridiculous. Hmmm, since I color my hair too, this book may be a good investment.

Bett1e: Hmmm...I'll look for a used one on Amazon, then. Thanks! (Actually that wont work cause I'm kind of anal about new books. I like to be the first to mark em, dog ear 'em, etc.) /images/graemlins/nuts.gif

Valleygirl: LOL...i was trying to talk myself out of spending more money, but I guess that's now out of the question. Thanks? /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Miss Kenesha: (hope I spelled that right, can't see your post now). Thanks for telling me about my link. I am sooo not getting it with this linking pictures stuff. I'll open a thread under off topic to see if people can view it now!

I agree with the drawbacks posted here thus far but for anyone who is interested I think Shamboosie's book is the hair color BIBLE for both relaxed and natural women.

I really feel his coloring advice is superior and he gives more information on this subject than I've ever seen given by a hair care "expert".

He IS off the chain with his internet views. And that he slightly elitist on the whole "professional" vs. "non- proefessional" issue can be a bit irksome as you read, only because all of us here know that many of the ladies here know FAR more about their own hair (at the very least) than many of the "professional" stylists we've encountered in our collective lifetimes.

My 2 cents.

I think it is really great for people just getting started with proper hair care. Great tips on proper relaxing techniques and conditoning regimes. Alot of people I know won't listen to me but they will listen to what he has to day in the book.
