I want to get some but I want some advice. What are some good and bad things about layers. I wear my hair in a wrap everyday and I think layers will make it look better. TIA

I had layers before, here are some of my pros/cons:

Pros:
Cute when curled
Makes hair looker thicker when curled
Looks very unique

Cons:
Cute ONLY when curled, if uncurled looks thin
Usually hard to maintain curl without heat (I would use rollers but they made me have those creases and were VERY hard to sleep in)
Hard to grow hair even
Takes away some length
'In-between-stage' is very difficult

I think I won't get them because I know it will be a pain to grow my hair even again. I did the short and the top long at the back for about 4 years and I said I would never cut my hair two different lengths again.

I have them now, and I love them. I didn't always, though.

Pros:
Adding just a few curls makes my hair look fabulous
Bounces and swings very easily
Hair has character
Looks really thick when curled
I never have to do anything to the bottom layer

Cons:
Looks a little thinner when straight
Growing them out can be an issue

Whenever I had layers it made my hair look extremely thin, I thought layers would full it out.

I agree with Lauren and Mizani. I've been debating too. My hair grows in natural layers so I can get an idea of how much nicer it would look if I had real ones. I think I'll get some after my hair grows out a few more inches and I can lose some length and be ok with it. In the past I've always regretted it for the reasons Lauren and Mizani stated. Just like I ALWAYS regret cutting bangs.

The girls are right on the money.

They do give the hair some volume and body/movement, especially at the top or close to the head. And when highlights are added to layers, they look much cooler than when highlights are added to hair with a straight cut.

BUT

They grow out very thin IMO as well. To me hair grows best with an even blunt cut.

I am growing out layers right now. It's a pain in the @ss. Just too much difference between the short and longer lengths. However, long layers are a different story. I think they look great and they aren't such a problem to grow out. The biggest problem is growing out bangs. Ugh.

This thread was really helpful, as I had been thinking about layers for a while. I think I'll pass for now though.... although the layers i have seen on folks look absolutely gorgeous, it sounds like the cons might outweight the pro's, in the long run. :ohwell:

I've always had layers. For me, I want the thinner look. My hair would be way to thick with a blunt cut. I love the extra dimension they give to hair. I have long layers. My shortest layer is shoulder length, and the longest layer is APL.

I hate my stupid layers with a passion! They look cuter on longer hair imo. On me they just look stringy and yucky. BTW, Kinikakes you and your hair are adoreable ;)!

Great Topic! I'm also not a fan of my layers at this point, my hair is VERY thick, but still the bottom layer, which is about armpit length, looks thin when my hair is straight because it is longer. It is also the area of my hair which seems to grow the fastest so it's seeming to take forever for other areas to catch up. I'm transitioning now, and don't wear my hair straight so it's not a huge issue, but I still would like to have hair that is one length.

Pro
-it looks super cute when you bump it and wear it out

Con
- When you get tired of it, and decide to grow it out, it takes forever!
- it grows out in layers, and if you want it all one length, you are cutting for what seems like forever
-You can only do certain styles, depending on how your layered cut looks. No more updos, buns, ponytails for me. It took 3-5 months to grow back enough hair to be able to do these. Even at that, it was still a pain w/ all the layers that I had.
-if you don't want to wear your hair straight, the style looks weird. I am natural, and I did get a layered cut, when I allowed the stylist to flat iron my hair. When I washed my hair 2 days later, I couldn't do much w/ the cut she gave me. Even my twists didn't lay "right"

Just take a long time to decide what you want to do. If you do go w/ layers and you have longer hair, you just may want to think of all the styles that you currently do, to see how they will work out w/ the new cut, and what your hair goals are for the future. As you can tell, I regreted my choice to cut,and cut into layers.

I feel a little bit better about my layers now.
I'm in the process of growing mine out but it will seem like you are not making much progress when you are slowly trimming the ends to even it out
:perplexed

I agree with a lot of the ladies on the board. I'm trying to grow mine out too. It's a pain.

Pros
Hair looks much thicker when curled
Add more definition to hair

Cons
When straight, hair looks thin at longer parts
Evening hair up takes a long time

I liked the way they looked at first, but now uh uh. I'm cutting my length all the way around to the shoulder to even it up.
