What are considered protective styles?

I always thought of protective styles as those that protect your ends for air and drying out.

Nah, not to me, if your hair is worn out with those sets, how is it protecting anything? To me protective styles are buns and rolled up braids (meaning after I do a braid, I roll it up and pin it.

In any hair style you should be moisturizing and taking care of it to prevent breakage. I just thought protective styling meant anything that keeps heat off of the hair. So anything that covers the hair is a protective style?

protective styles are anything that helps retain hair length and protects your hair from breakage or dryness... particularly your ends. ;)

i was under the impression that there are a couple different levels of protective styling....like braids and twists are the kind that are protective because they keep you from constantly manipulating the hair, whereas, buns and baggies and phony ponies are protective because they hide your ends and keep them from getting damaged....so, i guess it depends on what level youre looking for :D

Yeah @ what Shatani said. If twists can be considered as a "protective" style, then why not strawsets too? I know if I had a straw set in, I wouldn't be manipulating my hair. It doesn't seem as if your hair's ends have any more protection in twists than they would in a straw set.

You know in the technical sense, strawsets/rollersets are not protective styles. I always believed that they were until I realized that I wasn't protecting my ends from drying out or breaking off when I wore those styles. However, I do consider them a form of a protective style because they eliminate the use of heat and constant manipulation on my hair.

I agree...
