Wedding Themes

Hey, I am so happy for this forum!!!

We are getting married on July 23 and have chosen a Harlem Renaissance Black Hollywood theme.

Any and all ideas are welcome!!!

Oh my gosh that sounds like such an awesome theme! We didn't really do a theme b/c we wanted to keep it simple. But that sounds like fun! Maybe you could draw a lot of inspiration from the movie "Harlem Nights"?

Look for David Tutera's My Fair Wedding on WE.... there are two episodes... One with a Harlem Renaissance theme and one with an old Hollywood theme. I'm thinking you are looking for a good cross between the two.

That sounds nice OP. If I was getting married, I am not sure I'd have anything more than a particular color theme. I am sooooooo boring, LOL! How exciting! I am trying to visualize it. :)

OP if and when I get remarried that would be my theme also. I love that entire era of the Harlem Renanissance.

Maybe have a Langton Hughes poem read at the wedding, for the reception if you can get a band to play a couple of old jazz songs or you could get a singer to sing on of Ethel Waters/Billie Holiday song.

Remember that era was about literature and music as well as politics so you probably would want to incorporate poetry and music from that era.

Enjoy! Hopefully one day I will be coming to you for ideas.

For invites...

Poem could go in programs

Juke Box Love Song

I could take the Harlem night
and wrap around you,
Take the neon lights and make a crown,
Take the Lenox Avenue busses,
Taxis, subways,
And for your love song tone their rumble down.
Take Harlem's heartbeat,
Make a drumbeat,
Put it on a record, let it whirl,
And while we listen to it play,
Dance with you till day--
Dance with you, my sweet brown Harlem girl.

---Langston Hughes

crlsweetie912 everything you put there is in mind, I went yesterday to a costume shop and bought DF a hat and me a feather (I am making my own hair piece) for our engagement photos this weekend, we are going to have small prints done and using music note placecard/photo holders on each table. I found one tall vase in Marshalls today to try and make the center piece. I hadnt seen the flower 'bouquets'....I need those. I am asking my guest to 'play' along....Keep em coming ladies!!!!

You could print various poems from that time and use as table cards. Or type in famous poets names, or something else from that era and use as table cards.
