I have never seen it like he does it with the flipping pieces to make like a base but....

Don't laugh....I used to do something like this back in the day. Before I could semi cornrow I used to just sew the tracks into my hair. I would part it and at the roots as close to the scalp I could get I would just make lil loopy loops and sew it into my hair. The problem was that they were easy to slide out. You could combat that though by making smaller loops but it still wouldn't stay no longer than maybe a lil over a week.

I stopped, however, once I started using my next step up. That step was (because I still couldn't cornrow) to twist my hair like I was doing flat twist sew around them to keep them twisted and then sew the hair to them. They were my semi cornrows.
