Hey dolls...I've had this weave in for about 8 weeks now and its straight hair with just my crown left out. I'm almost 15 weeks post relaxer so I have been flat ironing with my FHI platform about once a week when I wash to straighten out my roots. I've been wearing weaves for over a year now so its not like I'm really that new to the game. The only problem is I have been working out more so I've kinda been pressing out my roots a bit more to keep them flat..(I already know thats a big no no) I noticed this morning that I had a small section of hair on my crown thats ALOT shorter than the rest of my hair :nono: Its not detrimental or anything but I'm just concerned. My question is what do you ladies suggest I do to immediately stop this and to prevent any future breakage? Any opinions or help is greatly appreciated.

Here are a few pics:

What do you ladies think?

What is your weave regimen? Do you deep condition, and do u use protein? What kind of heat protectant are u using?

Stop flat ironing your leave out.

Wearing full weaves with none of your hair out would work best or finding weaves that match your hair texture so you don't flat iron it daily.

I wash my weave once a week and I do deep condition the hair left out..I last washed last thursday and I used Aphogee 2 min mixed with some AO GPB and I left it on for about 5 minutes in the shower. I rinsed that out and proceeded to DC with a mixture of aussie moist 3 min, NTM DDC, honey, EVOO and EVCO. I left that on with a shower cap for about an 1hr with no heat. My hair is a bit protein sensitive but when I'm this far into a stretch I use a mild protein atleast every other week. As for a heat protectant I use CHI silk infusion and about a drop of Sabino moisture block.

^^have u tried roller-setting the leave-out hair? maybe that would give you the smooth look you need without the heat damage......?

This sounds like the same scenario I am in. Except by time I noticed the damage, one side of the hair that was left out was just as short as your breakage. After posting concerns, I figured that I had protein overload. I laid of the heat for about 2 weeks and just twisted the part that was left out or I did an air dry roller set on the part that was left out. I washed my hair with aveda damage remedy shampoo then followed it up with sap moss(i love shampoo). Then I applied their recovery mask and left it on for about 10 min. and got in the shower. My hair didn't feel dry and brittle anymore and I actually think we are on the road to recovery. My next install is Saturday, so I will be weaving everything up...Keep moisturizing your hair...

Same thing happened to me a few years ago. I used to wear the silky straight hair and made sure my hair matched - :wallbash: big mistake! I deep conditioned and watched my protein & moisture balance. In the end, I stopped wearing my hair out altogether. I'd weave it all up! Nowadays they have some good techniques for making a part look natural without leaving you hair out. If you have to, I would recommend changing where you left it out (maybe a side part next time), and less flatironing.

Thanks for all your suggestions ladies. I was actually thinking about getting a full head weave with a bang but I never really thought about a closure. Do you guys know any good websites where I can get a realistic looking closure? I just don't want it to look obviously fake

I agree that you should get a closure or full weave to give your leave out a break. Right now I have Halley's Curls Salon Relaxed in w/ a matching silk closure and the hair is great and the closure looks really realistic...

Wow, sorry to hear this, Ada.
I would say to either get a full head sew in or find alternative ways to heat. You're relaxed, right? Have You thought about just lightly blowdrying the left out hair and wrapping it tight to straighten? Rollersetting?

I didn't have this problem, but then again, I wouldn't always flat iron. I know you said you flat iron ONCE a week, maybe during your wash, but it really seems that you may be flat ironing more than that. The small touch ups to head out to the store, club, etc. All that contributes. How much are you stretching your relaxers in between installs? I also feel a combination of relaxed hair and heat can cause the breakage. I like your idea for the full weave with the bangs.

Hope this helps and hope things get better!

everything everyone has said, when I had crown breakage I stopped with the heat tools and started to rollerset, and my crown grew back overnight, but let the flat iron go for a min, try the scarf method rollersetting your leaveout if possible and only blow the roots or light flat iron after wrapping the hair it should get it straight, there are other ways to get the hair to blend without too too much heat.

oh and deep conditioning/protein to strengthen that section back up.

I agree with the other ladies about discontinuing your heat usage. Using the AO GPB & the Aphogee 2 min. Reconstructor seems a bit much since both are enriched with protein. Maybe use one or the other.

I had similar problem with my hair (without the breakage): The "horse-shoe" of my hair, left out for my sew in, keeps splitting even though I only flat iron after I DC, and ALWAYS use a heat protectant after my DC. I noticed my ends usually looks dry after my DC....

Fast forward to last night, I decided to co-wash the "horse shoe" hair, I used Aussie 3 mins + shea butter, applied heat with my blow dryer for 3 mins, then rinsed out. My entire hair looked very moiturized. i THEN applying SHEA BUTTER TO MY ENDS, then CSI all over the length of my hair, then proceeded to flat iron; honestly, my hair felt AMAZING! I think the shea butter protects the hair from over-drying or over-frying or something....

I honestly think the breakage is due to not moisturizing your ends before using heat protectant and flat ironing. Oil based moisturizers are the best for pressed hair, IMO. I think any oil based moisturizers will work: including coconut oil HTH.
