Hi all!
As the title of the post suggests I am a newbie and I absolutely love that a forum like this exists. It's great to see black women's hair celebrated (relaxed, tex-laxed, natural and anything else that exists) and for genuine tips and helpful advice being shared. Times are-a-changing, lol, because it's kinda amazing an online forum has managed to accomplish what so many 'esteemed' black women's magazines haven't. Alright enough of the gushing, lol.
Truth is I'm totally lost. After getting a good hunk of my hair damaged, broken off, chopped off and just generally abused by the good majority of hairdresser in my city I've both become deeply distrustful and close to hateful of hairdressers and totally unsure of how to do my hair. Sad story but for as long as I could remember my mom did my hair and when she finally stopped I started going to hairdressers. UGH. I don't want to lose my cool but after a good 6 or 7 years of just outright lying and callous treatment of my hair I'm not touching another hairdresser till...well maybe never.
Anyway that leaves me at 21 starting totally fresh and with sadly (lackluster and damaged locks - yay!). I'm a go-getta kinda chick and pretty self-suficient. I've taught myself a ton about skincare and makeup as well as helped to develop my own style, so it does seem like this is the next step. Truth is...like I've said before I'm lost. Magazines never seem to get the exact tips I'm looking for but you ladies seem so knowledgable and positive. I have a ton of questions and I'm basically starting from scratch.
As it is just from lurking on the forum I've gotten a good idea of what I need to start doing (moisture and protein and conditioning) and how to treat my hair - still I'm basically at ground 0. Okay so I do wear weave (and will have to for quite a while till my hair becomes...more even, healthier, less damaged, you name it). So that means I am dealing with two seperate issues. Of course there's weave maintenance (TIRED of having a bird's nest on my head) and there's also my treatment of my real hair, which when you don't have contact to it for weeks is QUITE interesting.
...Honestly where do I start?
I've been using Profectiv Mega-Growth Lotion as a moisturizer for my real hair (which I REALLY like) it seems to do a good job of moisturizing and keeping my real hair laying flat. Yesterday I applied some Dr. Miracles Anti-Breakage cream near my tips and smoothed it along my hair....wow. Well let's just say it suddenly became very easy to tell where my real hair and the fake hair met. It seemed to dry me out like that. So now I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for an anti-breakage cream that a. won't weigh down my extensions and make them greasy and nasty while b. still moisturize my hair and keep it laying flat.
Any advice? Btw, might flood the board with questions because as I try to buy products for my hair I'm suddenly overwhelmed. Does anyone have any experience with Kenra Elucence Moisture Acidifying Shampoo? Would that be a good thing to use after a relaxer?
Ps. Thanks
