Weave Care

hi ladies,

i am planning on getting my very first hair weave (full head weave i think is what it is called) next week, but i don't have the first clue about how i should take care of it after it is done, or if it will even be beneficial for me to have done to help me grow out my curly fro a bit!

i did a few searches on the forums first and found a few tips, but i have a few more questions so any help that can be provided will be GREATLY appreciated!

1) Is there a specific size the braids underneath the weave should be?

2) My friend told me all weaves have "the bump" and don't lay relatively flat on your head. Is that true? (I have seen some women with the same 'bump" but they also have bangs that part on the side. I plan on having bangs that are fully flushed with my forehead [ like Tyra Bank's style or Rihanna's symmetrical bob style] so will that relieve me of "the bump" if there is such a thing?

3) Can i basically wash my weaved hair using the C & G method? (i did this for my hair when it was braided and basically washed my scalp with diluted clarifying shampoo every 1 or 2 weeks, then squeezed diluted conditioner into my braids and finished everything off w/ braid spray and diluted infusium 23 hair strengthener)?

4) Is 8 weeks too long to keep a weave in?

Any feedback would be great! Thanks again!

p.s. i attached a pic of Rihanna's style that i hope to get. i only want my weave to come to my collar-bones however.

I know absolutely nothing about weaves but wanted to say that that style is cute and should (hopefully) be very simple for your stylist to achieve :)

Hello,

Good luck with the weave

1. just regular size cornrows are good. I personally think it's better not to use synthetic (filler hair in the cornrows). However again it really depends on the method they braid the hair underneath.

2. Yes some do and some dont, depends on the stylist and their experience.

3. Yes you may be able too-depends on your hair. definetly take care of your hair underneath

4. 8 weeks is too long if it's you first weave and you dont know what kind of results can be expected. I would try 4-6 weeks...maybe 4-5 your first time.

Hello Isis77,

I wear weave at least once a year for 10 weeks as a stretching aid and protective style. If your stylist does it right you won't have a bump. Make sure she doesn't cornrow your temples and edges to thight!!! That way you will avoid breakage and thinning. Be honest if it is too thight!!!
The C&G method for cleaning your hair & scalp is great.

I have the best website for you to go to, to get more of your questions answered. I have attached Reniece Weave Specialist Frequently Ask Questions Link.

Hope this helps..... I am sure you will look fabulous and I hope you like it. (it will be hard to sleep on it the first few nights) Please post pics

I heard the smaller the cornrows the lesser chance of a bump. But then again it depends on the stylist. I just got a full head sew-in with no hair left out last night and my cornrows are medium size and i dont have a bump.
You may want to check out blackhairmedia.com because those girls on there are experts when it comes to weaves and weave information and care.

For one for the style you need a professional stylist at least that knows what they are doing but it can be done. As far as taking care of the weave you can do the C&G method. But what i do and i learned from LHCF is that you can just get in the shower, i usually use diluted shampoo rinse that thru like twice. Then i spray some infusim on the braids or underneath(u may not be able to do this depending on the size of the braids and if you are able to get to them) then i just blowdry the weave like normal hair and curl it.

As far as how long i leave a weave in. Well usually because i get tired of the style i'll remove it in about 4 to 6 weeks. This one i have in this is the first time ive used wavy natural body hair(Saga brand). So im really liking this(no getting up and curling the hair)---i used to just stick with straight hair. So now im thinking of trying to leave it longer. Some people do say that it is best not to leave a weave in any longer than 4 to 6 weeks.

BTW heres Reneices fotki: http://public.fotki.com/Reniece20/

I forgot to tell you. I cut my weave weft in half to get a less bulky weave and smoother look. Sometimes I cut it or my weave stylist will help. (if you try this) I say cut it before you go in for the appt and let the stylist know in advance you are cutting it. (she might recommend you not cut it, depending on how thick you want it) With a thinner track I have had the best weaves. This video has some great ideas on it. Take a look

Ok I have attached this other video to show you how to cut the weft in half. You can watch the whole video if you want. This girl is using another technique to attach hair (but I don't recommend gluing in extensions). Take a look

thanks for all of the advice ladies!

it's especially helpful to know not to leave it in for 8 weeks. i would have done that and then be up here all in tears cuz all of my hair would be coming out with the weave! :lachen:

also, bluediamond0829, how often/ many times per week/ per month did you use the diluted shampoo? when i was searching for weave care on the forums, i saw that some women actually do a DC with weave too. have you ever tried that or know of any other people who have? (good results, bad results...ect?)

and thanks for the videos Monigirl, i will definitely check those out.

i promise to post pics as soon as i can!

thanks again
