Wearing dookie/celie braids on the regular and getting away with it

Has anyone done this or can recomend how to do this with out looking 5 or crazy.

my hair is short and resistant. i hate styling it. the only style thats easy to do is dookie braids i cant even twist my hair because the hair doesnt stay twisted at the roots. its just puffy like so and it looks wonky when i braid the root

any tips or suggestions? I would like to wear my dookie braids though

Lol @ dookie braids, haven't heard that in a minute. I say it depends on your lifestyle, your place of work, and all of it is entirely based on your comfort level. My dream would be to wear cornrows 24/7 but I know people in my office would look at me crazy and I'd feel self-conscious.

I start braiding my twists at the root and then start twisting. Someone suggested that technique when I said that I could not wear twists for that very same reason.

Since I have begun twisting at the root my twists last 2 weeks even with me washing my hair 2-3 times a week. I now wear twists more often.

Although, I do prefer braids which lasts a month with frequent washings.

ETA: oops I missed that you have tried braiding at the root. Maybe you are coming to far down with the braid before switching to the twist.

Maybe make smaller ones and put on a headband or scarf with only the back out, so if it looks 'wonky' it's only that back bit?

I'd suggest trying smaller braids or twists no matter what, it's easier to grab smaller amounts of short hair than larger sections.

I used to think no until the actress from In Living Color & That's So Raven (she played Raven's mom) did the braids and I thought they looked nice. What if you use gel and/or smaller sections of hair?

I have puffy roots too when twisting. it doesn't bother me all that much that I wouldn't wear them though. Try making them smaller? Or wearing a twist-out or braid-out with a headband can help conceal a bit.

I did small braids when my hair was pressed and wore rollers at the end and then wore them to work like that. I think they looked OK.

If your hair is short and you parted them diamond-wise, then wore a scarf, they would lie flat and look tidy and I think that would work. Or you can just do the style you have in your avi...connected square braids. They could kinda look like cornrows. I can't do flat twists so I did something similar to my twists, ie twisted them around each other, and then put on a phony puff. (See attachment)

I have this problem too. Alot of people say shea butter works wonders but I have yet to try that out. Also keeping your fingers close to the twist while your doing it works too. Rustic Beauty on YT has a short segment where she shows how she does hers for her twistouts. I have yet to have a small amount of puffyness though but practice makes near perfect. I just pin it up or place a scarf/snood around it. But yea T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh who plays Raven's mom on Disney pulls wearing braids and twists really well. I watch the show sometimes just for her hairstyle. In any case g'luck!

Your hair looks nice BTW. Maybe add a few more twists in the back. Then you can make a bun or roll with the twists.

I actually think this can work. Back when I wore wigs all the time I had Celie braids underneath. And if I was just going to work out I'd just wear my braids. It wasn't cute but it didn't bother me any.

I think if you wanted to make it more stylish you'd have to have longer hair. For example, I've done big braids with added synthetic hair (maybe 20) and worn them in a bun. It works well if the parts are really nice, either diamond like Nonie said, or something else.

That was a great protective style that didn't take too long, was cheap (or free if I had a friend do it) and was easy to take care of. You could try that if you aren't adverse to fake hair.

I do and, have done since October, I plait my hair a bit smaller than what you have done in your first pic and, TRY to wear it in a ponytail or, use headband.

I re-plait every week and, since doing so, I have retained moisturer and had less breakage.

The reason for me plaiting is the same-ish as yours: the hair wouldn't lay flat when twisted and, I have relaxer at the ends.

Of course, like another poster said, having plaits may not be suitable for place of work. I'm just lucky I work at places that are relaxed with clothing and hair.

I agree with Nonie, I think if you made diamond parts with sections a little smaller than "dookie" size you could pull it off. I've worn my hair like that a few times, and I thought it looked presentable. I wore them out and to school without any crazy looks.

Have you tried murrays beeswax on your twists? That makes the hair stick together. I think like the ladies said, It would depend on your place of employment. I think if your hair is a nice length and you make it neat, it should be okay. I love the look of the girl in
The Secret Life of Bees who had the fat braids. It was super cute but It did make her look young. I think it is cute for an everyday hairstyle but I would do something different for a date.

Try wearing them up - a pretty comb, or a couple of hair pins. Or, do the twists, and then put them up in flat twists. My roots are NEVER tight, and I like doing big twists (because they are faster) and that's my favorite way to make them look nice.....

Well basically you can do it underhand or overhand and it's just twisting with an extra strand. You overlap the middle strand with the strands next to it, alternating each turn. I hope I didn't confuse you more. I can't cornroll or flat twist. And my regular twist never come out uniform on the same twist if that's any consolation?

I did used to wear "celie" type braids under my wig when I first BC'd.
