"water will make your hair rot!!!"

was what i was told by my beautician in regards to braidout or airdrying. Now i never fell for the hype but always wanted to know if there was some truth behind it now that i'm co-washing and doing braidouts this summer

I never heard that before; I have heard water dries hair out, though. I assume it has to do with people mistakenly blaming water for the bad things really harsh/ineffective products do to hair.

I could be wrong, though.

I've heard make your hair dry... which is just a common misconception.

but make your hair ROT? Makes no sense. Sense when does water make things rot? You take a shower everyday, does water make your skin rot?

I haven't been to her shop in 2 years..I've just been focusing on getting my hair healthy but i just didn't trust what she was saying...who knows maybe that was her way of keeping clients

But when my neice and I were 13 years old, my sister use to put grease and water on my neice's natural hair to make it curl up. I wouldn't let her near mine. But anyway, my neice's hair turned hard like wool and started breaking off. I think that's what she means by it rotting.

My neice had pretty natural hair, and for some reason that grease and water destroyed it.

The grease dried your niece's hair out. Apparently, the hair wasn't being washed and the grease and dirt built up on the hair. I wouldn't call that rotting that sounds like lack of care.

actually a friend of mine said her stylist told her that her daughters hair had dry rot.....we just ignored it because dry rot is a condition wood gets but here is a definition so i can see why someone would put the two together

Dry rot is a condition of wood in which a fungus breaks down wood fibers and renders the wood weak and brittle. Excess moisture is the root cause of dry rot.

I heard that millions of times as a kid erplexed. Wash n goes were a no no because water "make hair rot". Another reason why I rarely went swimming... Now I know better of course

Tires can dry rot too.But nah...it's not going to make your hair rot unless you put it in like a bun or something for days w/o taking it down and it doesn't get the chance to dry out...then fungus and mold grow on it. I don't think anyone here is that nasty. (Speaking from observer's experience...saw a girl do that before...was gross...)

The thought that hair can rot or mildew upsets my stomach. I've heard of ppl assuming that locs are dirty because if you wash them they will mildew

And her hair was NOT dirty. We always had our hair washed 3x a week. My family always did this.

My family is clean and nobody in my family has had hair rot, mold, mildew, or just mysteriously break off when they were caring for it and washing it.

FWIW, I wasn't trying to insult you but hair doesn't just dry out and break off unless something wasn't right. I have never heard of grease and water alone causing hair to turn to wool and break off especially since you said your niece had been using the grease for years.

I think what happened to your niece's hair could possibly have something to do with the mineral oil and petroleum waxes that is normally contained in grease. When added to water on the hair strands, the combination may have clogged the cuticles, therefore causing breakage from becoming dry and as a result it prevented added needed moisture from getting into the cuticles of the hair, especially if the hair was not clarified often enough.

This is not to say that your niece's hair was not cleaned on a regular basis, but that it may not have been clarified regularly to prevent the mineral oil/petroleum wax build up on it. I am just trying to think of what may have caused the breakage. I don't think it was the grease or the water individually but the actual combination of both that caused the breakage. We all know that product build-up can not really come off with regular poos unfortunately. I have learned this myself, the hard way. What are your thoughts?
