Washing Hair=possible Serious Health Risks

Well for the past 5 months...i developed problems with my sinuses, because i used to wash my hair late at night and go to bed with it wet, i knoew that is very silly now. i started getting pain in my head, and later burning/pain around my forehead and nasal passage/ sore eyes and terrible congestion...it was so bad i thought i was gonna die...after taking natural supplements and keeping my head warm i've started getting better. two weeks ago i started doing daily conditioner washes to aid growth, its helping but now i'm getting congested again,,i don't want to risk my health so i'm wondering whether i should give up washing my hair/to aid health and growth/,,, until my sinus issues are over?

What if you used some low heat to speed up the drying process? It sounds like the wet hair is giving you the problem.

i agree...how bout to get at least damn so that when u wake it wont be still soakin wet

Interesting you say this!!!!

I was sick back in February and March when I used to wash more than once a week and did a few conditioner washes here and there and I would let my hair airdry. February and March were some cold months and it's always been said it's not good to have a wet head during cold months. I was very congested and had all types of sinuses problems, tonsilitis, and fever as well.

Now that I have stopped airdrying and washing more often, I feel so much better. I haven't been hacking up mucous/phelgm anymore. I have now gone back to blowdrying my hair right after washing which I plan to do every 2 weeks. :yep:

Wow poohbear, you#'ve had the same health issues like me. leaving my hair wet at night led to sinus problems, i was doing this for months and it made me ill. I think i'll have to stop airdrying too. could i use my hooded drier instead of towel drying? i hope i don't get any breakage problems.

MeccaMedinah, peacelove and deedabug!!! thanks for your responses. Do you ladies think i should wait until the weather gets warmer before resuming my airdrying method? only this time i won't wash my hair at nights and i will remove most of the excess water first. Also i noticed my sinuses got worse in Jan this year, after travelling to jamaica on three transit fights in one day. thank God its much better, i'm just afraid of washing my hair whilst i'm recovering, i don't wanna go through all that pain again.

I would say yes, wait for the warm weather. I think if you use the low heat you should not have a breakage problem with a hood dryer since it is still non-direct heat.

Good luck!

Thank-you very much for your help!!!

Yeah! If you don't wanna use a blowdryer like me, you could let your hair dry under a hooded dryer and put it on low heat (which basically blows out room temperature air). ;)

Wow, I wash my hair at night and sleep with it wet and don't get sick. I make sure to stay warm and have a something on my head though.

I’m sorry, but I just don’t agree with the other ladies here.
Wet hair does not make you sick. That is an old wives tale.
http://www.oldwivestales.net/questions-answers/0030.html

Viruses, bacteria, and allergens make you sick…not water.

I don’t think that you need to stop washing your hair at night. I personally don’t like to wash my hair a lot in the cold weather, but it’s not because I’ll get sick. It’s because I don’t like having a cold wet head in the wintertime. I think that you need to see a doctor about this condition. It may be environmental allergies like dust or ragweed. You may have a sinus infection.

Have you tried vacuuming your mattress or washing your pillows? I do this every couple of months or so because I am deathly allergic to dust mites.

Do you sleep with a feather down pillows or a down comforter? Sometimes feathers can trigger an allergic reaction.

I think you need to see a doctor. I don’t think you need to stop washing your hair at night.

If you need a little more information you can try pming patience. She works as an epidemiologist and she knows a lot about diseases, bacterium, public health practices and other kinds of gross stuff. She may be able to give you a little more information about this topic.

Good luck!

hi, i do suffer from allegies too, but i still believe leaving my hair wet at night has helped triggered sinus issues, yes i sleep on feathered pillows,,,and i have a cat too, so i suppose these are contributing factors. Thanks for the advice, i'm going to take a look at that site.

den1 I have the same problems. When I go to bed with a wet head I wake up with sinus pain. The way you catch cold may be a myth but the pain I experience only happens when I go to bed with a wet head so I try to wash earlier up in the day.

I'm sorry to hear about your sinus pain. Thank God I don't suffer from allergies, and have never had a problem with my sinuses. I wash EVERY SINGLE MORNING and airdry. I do cover my head if its cold/cool out (so that my body isn't cold), but I have to agree with AFASHIONSLAVE when she says microbes make you sick not cold or water. I keep trying to tell my mother this. She understands the logic, but the key words are : an old wive's tale :D I love my ma, though!
