Wash Day Yesterday

Update: Wash Day Yesterday w/ More Protein

So, if any of you read my post yesterday, you saw that I was planning to change my routine by using a protein treatment since my hair is getting permanently dyed on Friday. Ombré color with blonde on the ends. Because I didn't have time to wait for amazon to deliver anything I went to Ulta and bought redken extreme strength builder. I saw that in the ingredients isopropyl alcohol (drying to hair) is used. So I did a quick google search and found out that isopropyl alcohol can be used to make sure other good products can penetrate the hair.

I had my oil mix of avocado oil, coconut oil, emu oil, JBCO and olive oil massaged on my scalp and saturated in my hair for about 3 hours. I used my Creme of nature Argon oil shampoo and then applied Redken. I left it in for 7 minutes, but if I include the time taken to apply, it was probably 10 minutes. I rinsed it out and my hair felt hard. I know protein is supposed to do this, but I was kind of shocked because I haven't used protein since October and my hair shouldn't need it. I applied my ORS olive oil conditioner and put a plastic bag on as usual. Then it hit me! I've never looked at the ingredients in my ORS conditioner. Well, what do you know? Protein! I have been using protein every week since October. Well anyways, I rinsed it out of my hair after 30 minutes and it dried a lot quicker and it felt just a little hard. I applied my mix of hello hydration, water, and olive oil every time it started to feel too dry. I only put one layer of coconut oil on. I google searched after the fact and found out that coconut oil is good at holding in protein, so I did not apply anymore. Now that means I have been using protein and sealing it in weekly, so I definitely did not need any extra protein.

I put my hair in a somewhat sleek ponytail with aloevera gel and Eco styler olive oil gel on top. I twisted and wrapped my ponytail in a bun and put a plastic cap over it for night and of course a scarf for my edges. So this morning my ponytail was slightly damp when I went to work. It didn't feel like a dried out damp feeling though. I decided to braid it because I knew my ponytail would turn into a big, big, big poof. It has been in a braid for an hour and a half now and so far the ends starting after the bottom ponytail holder are pretty dried out. The bottom half of my ponytail in the braid that is dry feels pretty moisturized still. When I get home I'll apply more moisture, and I will possibly keep it in a braid all week.

I don't think my hair is completely ruined from doing this. I only have a little bit more breakage(I've seen worse with my October incident and my incident last week with a hair stylist). I'll just have to wait and see what happens when I get it colored. I'm sure it will get cut. I will show pics regardless of what it looks like so people can learn from my (maybe-->) mistake.

*The only thing that changed differently from my regular routine is the fact that I added emu oil to my mix; I usually leave my oil mix in for 6 hours; the Redken; I did not use my Giovanni Leave in because I forgot.

Maybe I should spray my hair with a little water and put in the Giovanni leave in....hmmm

I am 8 weeks post relaxer.

What happened in October and last week with the stylist? Also, do you own a moisturizing DC? For clarification, is your hair natural or relaxed? Also, your hair looks nice and lush in your two pix!

From the month of August until October I was flat ironing my hair almost every day and then in September and October I was deep conditioning my hair for 1hr 30mins with Shea moisture Deep Condition every week. During that September through October period I was losing a lot of hair in the shower after deep conditioning. The instructions said leave in for 45mins and my time was double. One day I put in 3 quarter sized applications of the Shea moisture leave in conditioner. When I blow dried my hair it went everywhere. There was hair Everywhere. I got a relaxer a week later and got my ends trimmed but my hair dresser didn't take of enough and my hair just looked really thinned out. I decided to transition to natural because of that and also because I developed a bald spot from sebhorric dermititis. I didn't know anything about YouTube or hair blogs so basically at around 12 weeks post relaxer until 25 weeks I lost soooo much hair from breakage. My sebhorreic dermitits got a little better but to this day I still have that bald spot. I decided to relax again after the 25 weeks. Everything was good with my new hair regimen until I went to this hair dresser last week who basically ripped all of my hair out by combing it while it was dry. It was also in a 5 day old braid out so that made it even worse. She combed my hair even more while washing it, then before blowing with a brush she combed it more (no leave in conditioner). There were 2 HUGE bundles of hair on the floor and it was all from me. There's a pic on my page of what it looks like now.

I'm sorry to hear that you went through all of that! A lot of ladies on the board manage their sebhorreic dermitits with mud washes. It sounds like your hair was tangled from the five day-old braid out.

In my OutKast voice, "Don't ever, eva, eva, eva go to a stylist without pre detangling your hair with oil drenched fingers and removing sheds!" The stylist is not going to be as gentle or patient.

Good luck with your color/ombre! Please post pix! Are you going to a stylist to have it done, or are you doing it yourself?

When are you getting your hair colored?
Have you considered waiting a little while to see what's going on with your hair after this Protein treatment just to make sure that your protein-to-moisture balance isn't way off?

No judgement, BTW. It just seems like you've had a lot of issues over the past year with your hair/products. I'd hate for you to have an issue.

Right now my sebhorric dermititis is somewhat ok. I do get itchies here and there every so often but I guess I need to figure out how to get the bald spot to grow back. Thank you got the advice. I definitely know to detangle before now.

And I'm getting it done at a salon

I'm getting it done Friday. I know in risking it but I don't really mind if it has to get cut that much.

Is it the same stylist that ripped your hair out?

Your going to need protein on the ombre part of your hair frequently, after your color session.

I'm recommending, Joico Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm as a moisturizing DC to get your protein/ moisture balance back. You can get it on the ground at Ulta.

No a different lady. And thank you for the recommendation. I've been scared of deep conditioners since she's moisture.

You don't need to be scared of moisture, you just need to figure out the right balance for your hair.

ETA: I understand your fear of moisture read this post about my moisture overload incident.

ETA2: I'm glad it's a different stylist!

UPDATE: It's day 2 (Monday) after adding the protein. Day 1 (Sunday) I added my hello hydration mix, more water and Giovanni leave in over and slept with my hair in a bun with a plastic bag over. Day 2 my hair feels 95% back to its good moisturized feeling. I haven't seen any breakage. I will be applying my hello hydration mix w/ plastic baggy again tonight and every night until the color on Friday. I'm not sure when I will seal with coconut oil (my usual routine) because it holds in protein. Maybe Wednesday and Thursday depending on how my hair feels. With that being said. If any of you ladies ever get protein overload, you might want to try what I did.

UPDATE: I went to the salon today and the stylist said my hair felt too dry to color. I admit that my hair has been feeling just fine in the mornings but towards the afternoon it feels drier. I didn't feel like it feels as dry as it has felt before in the past , but I went with her advice and bought a deep conditioner. I will be using Keracare humecto Creme conditioner. Does anyone know if it's ok to sit under the dryer with this? All the directions say is to cover with a plastic cap for 15 to 20 minutes.

That stylist deserves an "High Five!" She advised you on what was best for your hair and not her pocket book. We hear so many horror stories, it's great to hear about the good ones who look out for their clients best interest.

Did you still have her cleanse, condition and style your hair?

I've never used Humecto, so I'm not familiar with the directions. I'm sure you can use heat with it. I think that Prettymetty uses that DC, so you can ask her.

I definitely thanked her for her honesty, but I didn't have her do my hair because it was $70 just to wash condition and flat iron. I know and trust a stylist that can do it for $45. I think she was a little nervous even about flat ironing it and said it would probably take her over 2 hours. I'll mention that she was also Caucasian so my hair type is obviously not something she is use to dealing with every day. The stylist I usually go to for flat irons gets it done in a little over an hour. I would just try to go to the lady who has done my relaxers for 7 years but she's very old school and she didn't even know what ombre is when I mentioned it to her. I'll have to contact Prettymetty then because I need some help!

Hey ladies. I use humecto with or without heat. It's really up to you. I get great results with just the plastic cap. Hope this helps :)
