I tried viviscal in 2003 both the pink box and black box for 7 months and no results however it gave me a seafood smell and my urine was dark yellow I called the company headquaters in new jersey and they said the smell comes from the marine complex (or something like that) ingredient. I did spend a lot of money on the product that did not work. The first time I orde mine it was from a dr in maryland the was featured in hype hair mag named dr. maclin and she also has a product that has the same ingredients as vivscal and i tried that aslo and no results.

Ladies just beaware of the seafood or fish ingredient in it might change your normal vagina scent as well as your urine.

Sorry that happened to you. I guess this doesn't work for everyone. I never had that problem and I was on the formula for 6 months.

yikes!!! wouldn't want folks going around perpetuating the vagina/fish myth. lol!! I'm sure the other ladies weren't having that issue or they woulda warned us. Sounds like another supplement that needs a lot of water to be taken in conjunction.

Hmmmm...I wonder if folks who eat sea vegies (seaweed, etc.) along with ocean-derived calcium get some of the same benefits. The ingredients seem so simple yet so expensive!

I wondered that also. I do eat lots of sea veggies but there is supposed to be something special about Viviscal, at least that's what I read. I've only heard good thiings about this product which looks like it's gone down quite a bit in price. I've read that women who have problems growing their hair because of disease and/or medication get very good results from this product also.

I get some of my vitamins from www.iherb.com and I noticed they sell Viviscal for $49.95 (black box) with free shipping and another 5% off if ordered online. I love the Iherb site because they ship so fast, like 2-3 business days right to my door.

The vagina/fish smell myth sounds like a whole different problem, maybe the result of an allergic reaction. I haven't read about this before.

Soho and Nice & Wavy, just a quick question, what colour were the tablets that you have been taking ? I was doing some research and I see that there are brown and white tablets.

Mine are the ones in the black box and they're a.... light tan color I would say. Not sure if that answers your question:lol:.

The ingredients (as listed on the back of my box): Cartiligeous Seafood Extract (North Pacific Marine), Acerola Extract, Silica Compounds
Other Ingredients: Microcrystalline Cellulose, Magnesium Stearate, Natural Orange Flavor

From the first ingredient (cartilage) it sounds like it's high in calcium. It seems to be derived from sea "skeletons" or something. I'm going to keep this supplement in mind if I'm ever of the mind to try something new and pricey. Sometimes it's hard to duplicate things like this exactly.

Isis, your diet and knowledge of nutrition is always so impressive!!

Cartilage is actually just connective tissue, for example it's the stuff that covers your bones and allows your joints to bend and move, or the squishy part of your ear and nose. Cartilage is made up of collagen (a protein) and fibers. Cartilage found in sea animals is found in invertabrates, meaning that they actually don't have skeletons at all. These would be animals like mollusks, crabs, etc. HTH!

Main Entry: car·ti·lage
Pronunciation: 'kärt-&l-ij, 'kärt-lij
Function: noun
1 : a usually translucent somewhat elastic tissue that composes most of the skeleton of vertebrate embryos and except for a small number of structures (as some joints, respiratory passages, and the external ear) is replaced by bone during ossification in the higher vertebrates
2 : a part or structure composed of cartilage

Thus the quotes I placed around...."skeletons"...in my post.

But thanks!

Isis, my sister eats seaweed as a snack on a regular basis, but only the paper thin sort that's almost black in color. It looks like the product used to wrap sushi. Which sea vegetables are you eating?

Your sister is probably eating Nori, which I too love to snack on or crumble in my salads. :lick: You're right, it is used to make sushi.

I also love Kombu which look like wide, black, hard rectangular slabs. It softens in soups, and is a good protein source, chewy almost like some meat. When cooked with beans, it keeps them from giving you gas.

Dulse and Wakame both tastes almost like Nori, maybe a little stronger. I buy the Dulse in a shaker and use it instead of salt - it has a lot of flavor too. Hijiki, which looks like thin, black strands is delicious on salads (I see this in good salad bars), I have Kelp (very inexpensive) to sprinkle on salads, soups and veggies. I use the sea veggie Agar-Agar (great iodine source) to thicken soups or gravies. That's about all I buy, either from the health food store or from an Asian market(cheaper). Spirulina is also a sea veggie (algae) that I take in tablet form.

These sea veggies are all great for our hair since they are high in iodine and some are good protein sources. There are a lot more veggies from the oceans that I haven't bought yet.

Ok, back to the Viviscal topic!

My tablets were a light brown color.

THANK you Isis!!!!;) i m check the iherb site .5% off! hum that sounds good i m looking for the cheapest one as if i had to buy it again and again it can add up, that will be the most expensive of my vits haha

My order of Viviscal will be here Monday so I will start taking them then. I hope that I dont have any side effects and they work wonders. I will keep everyone updated. I will try to last for the next six months taking this, money willing, to see if I see any results. Hopefully soon I will post pics.

I tried this YEARS ago when it first came out... before I even knew I had this iodine sensitivity. From the very first pill I started breaking out big time. I remember being so disappointed, because back then the pills were $75.00 and I had to throw them all out!

I hope it works for all of you!

oh sorry to hear that Sb44 , i m glad to know i did not dream that cause i remember the pills being $75 dol back then they really lowered it down cause they dont seem as expensive as before. I m look out for the break out though thanks girl for sharing

This is just a little too steep for me just to get my hair to grow. Don’t get me wrong I want to get it if it means I can get at least 1 inch per month (currently I get ½ inch per month). I’m like this, “at least it is growing!”

I am trying to look for alternatives and I think sea veggies just might be it. Thank you so much Isis for the info on which sea veggie you eat.

I am a little afraid of the taste, in other words I don’t want to spend all my money on something I don’t like. But I will go for it b/c it is cheaper than viviscal!

Isis, did you always eat sea veggie or did you start after joining this site? If after joining, did you have mega growth?

You should begin to see changes around the 3rd week or so (i hope, I know I did) by then, you will surely tell us if you see any differences in your hair or not. Like I said before, sometimes certain things work for some people, and some don't. We all experience that in our lives. You can eat strawberries with no problem, but your sister may eat it and breakout in a rash. It's not that the strawberries are not good, its just that your sister's system doesn't receive them well.

That's how it is with everything. So I'm hoping that it will work for you and the other's who ordered it. I will be ordering mine again because it does work for me.

Blessings.

Thanks for the info Isis! I see all of those items at whole foods and the Asian market up the street. A korean noodle soup I purchase includes a packet of see vegies based on your descripiton. I wonder if this could be a separate thread: Food Choices for Hair. Folks could list the foods they've added to their diet with a mind for hair AND overall health.

Once concern, I was told by my aesthetician that high levels of iodine contribute to acne. Have any of you heard that?

You're welcome MonaRae!:)

I started eating sea veggies when I decided to eat vegetarian, which was many years ago and much of my adult life. Besides the nutritional part, the sea veggies add LOTs of flavor to food. After joining LHCF and developing a regimen, my hair did take off in becoming thicker before longer. My growth was not any faster than the average rate. From reading about Viviscal, I think it has something more that sea veggies do not have.

If you're afraid of the taste, just try some sheets of Nori which can be found in most regular grocery stores (in the Asian section). If you're not wrapping it around rice, it can be crumbled on food like salads and other dishes. Americans are used to this particular seaweed amd if you don't like it, you only spent $2 or $3 dollars.

Also, MonaRae, you just reminded me of Kelp and hair growth, which I have not fully explored yet. An Asian woman who owns a health food store and has long, lush hair told me that Kelp grew her hair long quickly (I asked her). She said it was because Kelp has such a high concentration of natural iodine and iodine is one of the keys to hair growth and health.

There are some older posts and threads on this board about Kelp and if one has thyroid problems, they need to check with their doctor before taking it, because of the iodine. Kelp is very inexpensive to buy. All sea veggies have iodine but kelp seems to have the most.

You're welcome Patient1. Yes, this could be a very good separate thread. :yep: I have not heard that high levels of iodine contribute to acne. Most Americans don't eat that much natural iodine in their diets anyway except for lots of table salt (chemicals) with iodine added. I haven't read anywhere that acne is a concern among Asians in Korea, China or Japan, for example, who eat sea veggies everyday. Their hair for the most part is gorgeous though and that's why we buy it for weaves.

From the list of ingredients posted by SohoHair, it doesn't look like Viviscal has iodine in it...

can you ladies describe the size and the type of pill? is it as small as a tylenol (i wish), or maybe like the size of the GNC ultraHair pills? also is it coated with a gelatin so it'll be swallowed easily? I want to try this but i am still having an issue with swallowing the GNC ultrhair hair pills because they don't have a gelatin coating... :ohwell:

'

It's a circular flat tablet if that makes any sense, and it's not coated in gelatin. I don't take the GNC ultra hair pills, or Tylenol so I can't really reference either of those but I do take the GNC Ultra Mega women's Multi and Viviscal is roughly half the size of those pills. Viviscal is one of the smaller pills that I take and I too sometimes have trouble with the large pills but I usually don't have trouble with Viviscal. Best of luck!
