Vigarol Liquid Relaxer

I remember this product from when I was a little girl. My grandmother used it, as she had bleached hair. She claimed it was very mild and just loosened the curl pattern. My mom told me that at one time it was the only relaxer available.

Anyway, I saw it in the BSS and wondered if this stuff is safe. I have an almost eight year old daughter with waist length loose/corkscrew, frizzy, and very puffy hair. It tends never to stay straight or even tame when I try to flat iron it (her hair resists heat). She is complaining that all the girls wear their hair down ( the white ones are natural and the black ones are relaxed), but that I always make her wear braids. I do this b/c her hair would be a tangled mass within a half hour if I let it loose. I am kinda considering a very very mild straightener. I really don't want to start with the chemical comittment this soon, her hair is really beautiful!

I believed my mother tried this out and she claimed it caused so much breakage. And I remember another member in here said that stuff was pure garbage. Maybe you can get your hands on the ORS Demi-Perm or the Matrix Sleek.look line. With the Sleek.look line, be careful with the Iron Smoother, that stuff is loaded with alcohol so use some type of oil or moisturizer to counteract this. Also don't press her hair too often. I hope you find something.

I don't know anyone who had good results with this product besides longhairdiva. (A former troll for those who don't know)

Most people complained of extreme dryness. Some experienced breakage. The straightening ingredients are ammonium thioglycolate (which I believe is jheri curl solution  ) and ammonimum hydroxide. It might work for someone with loose curls. :ohwell:

And it smells like rotten eggs. :barf:

Don't Use This On Your Daughter!!! :nono: :nono:

I say this because it is not compatible with any other relaxer so if she ever wanted to do something else, she'd have to cut the Vigorol hair off  Also, I don't know anyone who had great results with it and as Sassy has said, I heard it smells like ROTTEN EGGS!

Your daughter's hair is GORGEOUS, maybe you can use the Phytorelaxer Index 1 on her hair to cut down on the pouf, if you are willing to go to a chemical, since review wise this is one of the most gentle of the chemical relaxers. :)

Don't mess with it. The results are sort of unpredictbale and I too know of folks who experienced breakage while using it!

Okay, you've convinced me that this is not the way to go. I may try the Hennalucent on her or something. I definately don't want to damage her hair, but she's dying to wear it down. Her cousin (same age) got a relaxer put in and she's able to wear it down sometimes.

This was the 1st relaxer used on me. I had shoulder length hair and I begged my Mom to let me get it. Against her better judgement she said yes. It did smell like rotten eggs.

Within 2 days my hair went from my shoulders to about 1/2 inch. Hair was everywhere-on my pillow--the floor-everywhere.

Mom took me to a dermatologist. It took over 2 years for my hair to recover and grow back.

Don't use this stuff. The are much better, more modern products on the market now. I did not know it was still being sold.

I do not believe this is a bad product; there was a time it was all we black woman had. It was meant to be wash in hair and the press and curled. It is suppose to extend the length of press and curl. It is much milder than other relaxers. I would do a patch test on my daughter's hair no matter what I use. But I do not believe Virgorl is such a bad product. It has been out since we all young and is still around; someone is buying it. Over on the WEST coast it is used as a pre-press and curls. They do not like relaxers to much on the WEST coast.

Yes unfortunately it is. I guess some people have a good experience with it.
