Ok, so I'm talking to a co-worker about hair and she tells me that she has been curling her hair every morning so I said "Girl you better get some steam rollers." And she tells me that well you can't use those everyday either because its still heat. You can use them occassionally but its bad just like a curling iron. :naughty: So ofcourse I had to open up LHCF and ask my fellow hair sisters... (as i'm looking behind my shoulder so i dont get caught.)
I love my vidal sassoon steam rollers, I dont use them everyday but I have used them every other day. So, are these bad too, do I deserve to be spanked? :spank: Please help a sista out!

Make sure she is not confusing those with the hot rollers that you plug in. But as far as the steam rollers go, I don't think they are harmful if used everyday. Steam Rollers are nowhere near as hot as a flat iron or curling iron. Plus the hair is being surrounded by moisture while the curlers sit. Curling Irons and Flat irons usually rob your hair of moisture before you get the snap, crackle and pop of breakage. It's kind of like comparing a sauna to a steam room. Both are hot, but not in the same way.

I can't see how the heat from the rollers can damage your hair. The heat is applied to the roller not directly to your hair. I used them almost everyday for a month and I never had damage.

Um, not to be mean what does her hair look like? I mean if she is giving advice I need to know what her hair looks like.

Hi Simplycee your hair looks great, and to answer your question...
:lachen: Her hair is a mess, but I've been trying to help her, I got her wearing falls because her hair was really struggling. Now that its starting to come back she wants to let her hair breathe and not wear falls or fake buns but she told me she's been curling her hair everyday. I told her not to do that get some steam rollers, thats when she said they were bad too. I told her not hot rollers its steam you put water in the basin, etc. But she said heat is heat. Her hair was APL but she cut it all off got highlights and its been looking bad ever since. And it looks really dry too.:perplexed :ohwell:
Now that I know you use them daily i feel better, what do you moisturize with and do you moisturize before or after using the rollers?

I would moisturize before but lightly, as I find if I'm heavy handed with the moisture it takes longer for the curls to dry. Currently I am using QB Sidr Butter. I need to pull these rollers out. I haven't used them since the summer.

Can the caruso rollers be used on natural hair? I keep seeing them at sallys but I dont want to waste my money.

Steam rollers like Caruso's are not applying heat to the hair at all. The steam is hot coming out of the vent, of course, but it is not at all on the hair. Just good ol' healthy moisture in the hair.

I've used my Caruso system for years, not daily though only because I love learning and wearing other styles--especially styles requiring no electricity, like airdrying in rollersets, pin curls, braidouts, etc. ;)

I really appreciate my Caruso and besides for regular styling, it's so handy for emergencies and perfect when traveling. :yep:

Prettykinks - There is a thread in here somewhere about naturals using the Caruso or other steam rollers. Also, the older versions of the Caruso came with instructions just for relaxed hair and for natural AA hair. I have it somewhere but haven't seen it in a long time.

lol, Why do mothers always think our hair's gonna fall out? :ohwell:

Thanks ladies for your feedback on these rollers. They don't sound damaging at all. I have natural coily hair but I think I'm gonna give these a try.

caruso's work very well for me on natural flat ironed hair.

ill be sure to post some photos soon. i make sure to put on some leave in and a little serum then leave the roller on the steam for 5 seconds, remove excess water from the bottom of the roller and leave in for 15-20 mins, my hair always comes out with a nice curl i use the biggest rollers. my hair also doesnt revert at all from the steam, it jus curls.

i have found that doing this on natural non flat ironed hair is not really a good thing because it doesnt really straighten the hair enough for the curl to come out smooth.

I think steam rollers are safe for everyday use. I have Carusos and I use them every single day to touch up or re-curl a few curls that got smashed during the night.

If anything is damaging it would be the sponge part of the roller but even that's safe to me. I've used Caruso for at least 4 years now. It's only steam/moisture which is great for the hair.

Just my opinion/experience but it's a strong one.

I can't see why caruso rollers can't be used everyday. What makes them healthier for the hair is that as the roller cools off and sets the curl the moisture is locked in. I think that was one of the major selling points for them back in the day on the commercials.

Off topic/Side note: Tried Caruso last night, my hair looks exactly like link posted by godsflowerrr--kinda what I expected though :ohwell:. But because I couldn't find any reviews by other naturals, had to try for myself.
Just know that I left rollers on way more than 5 sec, and I'm a novice at rollersetting... but still :look:
Plus: my hair felt very moisturized, tried on sis' weave hair (small rollers for 5 sec's on last 4" of hair, worked great!
