I have read over and over on the site that Petroleum is not good for hte hair. I've had a container of Vaseline sitting under my sink for maybe over a year. I am trying to use up some of the stuff so I can make room for more stuff . I decided to try the vaseline and boy let me tell you my hair felt sooooooooo good. So now I am wondering why is something that is not good for your hair feels so good. My hair feels so moisturized or am I imagining things?

I use vaseline on my hair if it's wet and pulled back (like in my avatar). Be sure to clarify when using this.

My mother only used vaseline in the blue cardboard container with the silver top when I was growing up and I had very long hair.

I use vaseline as my foot cream. I lather up well, slab it on , then cover up my feet with socks. Gets rids of calluses! :look: ...that all I use it for.

OT

So pretty!

something to do with petrolatum (sp?) coating your hair. it can be a good thing for locking in moisture... but by itself it does not moisturize.

i'm loving it right now with the baggie method... i pile on moisturizing stuff and then lastly cover with vaseline. it hasn't even been a full week yet but my hair is already doing 500% better. of course i plan to clarify when i wash this weekend... ;)

i used to use it when i was a preteen on my ends to help weigh down the frizz:D i didnt know if vaseline was a bad or good thing but it was heavy enough to serve my purpose:cool:

LOL, i did that too!!!

I use Vaseline on my face before I go to sleep (thin layer). I read in Glamour that it is good for your face because it provides a lot of moisture and even though it is a thicker substance it does not clog pores..I've been doing it lately after washing my face before bed and I wake up and my face is glowing :)

I know this is random since I just said it is a great moisturizer but a Nurse at my University told me if you use it too much your lips will stop producing their own moisture and that will make you want to use the vaseline even more.

Just FYI

I never used Vaseline on my hair, but I do use it to seal in moisture on my skin in the winter. I have considered using it on my ends though.

vaseline does not supply moisture to the hair ..IMO it just keeps other moisture from getting in and it also doesn't penetrate the hair shaft like lighter oils do(EVOO, sweet almond oil etc..) it just lays on the hair cuticles to slick it and give it shine. I still use vaseline but not for hair... I use it on my lips at night:lol: ...especially since this winter wind is harsh.

I do use ORS moisturizing hair lotion and it does contain petrolatum.. but it is so far down on the ingredient list that my hair doesn't mind:)

I used to use Vaseline when I baggied. It is a great moisture sealer, but it doesn't moisturize by itself.

I'm pretty sure my face would be glowing and glistening with a layer vaseline on it, too. :lachen: I have also heard of people doing olive oil rinses for their faces as a way to treat skin problems. I have very sensitive skin, so my face would be all kinds of broken out if I put vaseline, or any other oil directly on it. :nono: It barely handles the natural oils my skin produces. :ohwell:

But, vaseline is an excellent, excellent barrier to moisture loss, and it softens skin like nothing else. However, like everyone else has said it is not a moisturizer by any means. Moisturized hair is soft, but soft hair is not always moisturized. I only use it to base my scalp prior to a relaxer. Nothing can beat it as a barrier.

Chicoro uses Vaseline in her regimen and her hair is insanely gorgeous!

Personally I'm kinda rethinking the whole taboo about using hair products that contain petroleum. All I know is my lips love a slick of Vaseline at night.

Thank you, Priestess! I use vaseline. Prior to coming here, I always believed that vaseline was occlusive in that it smothered the hair. I was wearing protective styles and using natural things like almond oil and olive oil. I was also using natural shampoos. My hair was still dry, brittle and split. Nothing worked for me or my dry split ends.

What changed my mind was seeing a member here, Adrienne0914. Her photo used to be on the home page. The ends of her hair were beautiful, silky and smooth. Her whole head is gorgeous! So, going against EVERYTHING I had believed up until that point, I started using vaseline. I was always taught petroleum products were horrible, too. But it depends upon your hair and you. Also, her beautiful hair was proof that something was working. She said vaseline and baggying got her to her waist. That's what got me there, too.

I tried Vaseline back when I was doing the baggie method and the good feeling lasted for about a week then it started to make my hair feel horrible. I stopped using it and just used oil.

Your welcome, girl. You're one of my hair idols. ;) Thanks for sharing that wonderful hair testimony. That's really what it comes down to, you gotta just do works for you. :yep:

well, gosh-darnit:eek:

*rushes off to the store to purchase gallon of vaseline*

I never have even thought to put vaseline in my hair and I never will. I use it on my lips and my hands/feet/knees/elbows at night and that's it.... oh yeah on my browbone too for some highlight. On my hair?!?!?! Never.

I tried it with the baggy method a couple of times and it came out fine.:look: I don't use it on a regular basis though...

I love petro products. I've always used it on my hair . I think what goes for some may not go for all. When I stopped using petro products, my hair just isn't right.
