Update on Shedding

I wanna join too :-).

I think I may know the cause though...I stopped Prepooing and I fell off on my B Vitamins and my MSM...its actually been a minute on the vitamins and about a month on the MSM (which slowed my shedding in the first place). I'm wondering if its the reverse effect b/c it takes awhile for vits etc to get into your system, maybe I'm just now seeing the effect of stopping even though it has been a while. :sips MSM:

I have been suffering from shedding AND breakage. I have been going back and forth everyday about cutting my hair. I really dont want to cut it because I am trying to grow my hair for my graduation this May. But everyday I find my self with my hands in my hair feeling my hair and wanting to cry. I also want to get my ends trim but im scared the stylist will try and chop all of my hair off. But I really need to mend some of these spilt ends...WHAT IS A GIRL TO DO!?!

I'd first try to find out why it's shedding. Deep condition and add more moisture daily for the breakage. There are some sisters on this board that moisture daily too. Try low manipulation styles.

I try to comb mine once a week. Also I'm trying to go long time periods w/o shampooing...might even just only do conditioner washes. When I was younger my mother shampooed my hair about once a month and my hair didn't suffer, in fact it was longer, no breakage, nor shedding. That's one of the reason I'm giving up my creamy crack (relaxers).

Sounds like a good idea (the vitamins). I'm doing the MSM more now...I make MSM bottles of water for the day...I'm using flavored water and don't taste anything:lol:

Well I forgot to add that my shedding and breakage have decreased a lot in the last couple of weeks. After a protein treatment and using oils, I think I am curbing the dreaded monster that I have become oh so accquainted with.

My hair is shedding more then normal also. I think a protein treatment gone bad is what started it.I put the treatment on my hair and it started burning so I washed it out. When I did my final comb thru in the shower I lost alot of hair and every since then my hair has been shedding like crazy.

Did you do a deep condition afterward?

I remember after the birth of my first daughter (2002) my postpartum shedding was really bad. I lost my temples entirely. At that time I was going to a Dominican salon and she used an Antiflora (antidandruf) treatment and sent me home with about 20 ampules to use every day. It was Lipoxin something, which of course by the name had nioxin in it. But it worked. The shedding stopped immediately.

This makes sense to me now because my dermatologist prescribed me a shampoo that, at first glance, appears to be for dandruff and other scalp conditions. Apparently, it stops shedding. I noticed a decrease in my shedding from the first shampoo. I have to do it twice a week for a month.

How'd this become a sticky? I feel so proud. I guess enough of us are suffering from this so here's the support thread.:D

I don't think shedding lot's of hair at a time is normal for everyone and different pple may have their reasons why, medication, just had a baby, stress, etc. But I do know that it doesn't have to be happening to the whole world at one time for it not to be normal.
Each month or so there is a bunch of us that are having some serious shedding that we have never seen b4, some get it under raps and others nothing seems to help. So I figured that it could be normal if your at the end of your hairs life cycle and more new hairs are comming in than on a daily basis. I could be wrong but I just wanted to throw that out there since it happened to me over a long period of the summer.
I hope my other post didn't come off wrong.

Hey Cayenne0622.

I PM Pebbles yesterday and expressed our concerns and desires to have a support group. We need to lean on each other and share our stories in hopes of helping others and getting through the situation ourselves.

A BIG THANKS TO PEBBLES for adding this as a sticky!!!

I feel your pain.. I just recently had my first child (July 21st of this year):) and the last two weeks my hair has been shed TERRIBLY..! I'm talking clumps of hair at a time  when I run my hands through it.. I hear this is common after giving birth, (called Post Partum hair loss) and is caused by the hormones balancing back out after pregnancy.. It's horrible seeming my hair was so long, THICK and healthy up till 2 weeks ago.. My edges are even thinning, I don't know what to do.. Just wanted to know I feel your pain and goodluck with finding a solution to this madness...

Thanks for your support. I'm glad that you are concerned about us.;)

I'm still looking for the Dominician product that you used on your hair a while back. I'm thinking only select places sell it.

I'm in the same boat with the shedding I guess we just have to ride it out.

I didn't realize that this thread didn't include my update. Here it is. I started another thread a week or so ago updating my shedding info.

Ladies - I can't hardly contain myself!!!! I just got back from the derm and from her series of questions, we discovered the cause of my hairloss! Are you ready for this? My wisdom tooth surgery in May of this year! How could I forget about all of the stress and anxiety of finally committing to having that surgery, the insurance hell that followed it, and then the allergic reaction to either the anesthesia or the pain meds that sent me to the ER and my doc's office to get on even more medicine!!! I don't know why it didn't occur to me. I had the surgery in Mid May and my hair started coming out in June!!! Geez! She prescribed me a shampoo called Nizoral that I'm going to research before using. I'm so happy I could spit. My hair is trying to recover. Just so you know...I had put off having that surgery for years out of FEAR! It took a whole lot of miracles to get me in there and the doc had to give me laughing gas before even putting me under the anesthia because I was so ridiculously SCARED AND STRESSED.

Thanks for your support. I'm on the road to recovery. Hallelujah!

Wow what a story:eek:

I had the surgery too in April 2006 and did recover in about 3 days...I only took the meds for 2 days...it makes me sick to my stomach. I was only sick the first day. The hard part was not being able to eat what I wanted:(

I'm so happy you found the root cause.

yes! but it didnt do any good.

What type of protein treatment did you use? Did you use it after a chemical process or something - I'm just wondering why it burned? How often do you use the protein? Hair can break due to "too" much protein also. Your hair might just need more moisture.

:yay: I'm so glad you are on your way to healthy hair again!

Wow a support group I can join, lol. I have been a chronic shedders for quite some time now. I dont have anything to add, but my shedding did decrease after going natural. I think the chemical are just too much for my thin hair, plus I think the residue from the relaxers kept my scalp itchy, but my scalp itchy anyway, it dont take much to irritate my scalp.
Clarifying poos seems to help when the shedding gets really crazy.

OK, this is the link for the company that makes the Lipoxin that they used on my hair in 2002. http://www.piermarco.com/treatments.htm It is the Lipoxin for hair loss in the green and white bottles and boxes. I was having heavy post partum shedding and this stopped my shedding immediately. I continued with the treatment until my product ran out. So, there is something you can do about the shedding.:) Now, the site doesn't say anything about ordering it , but I am sure you can call the company directly and ask.

about 4 years ago i had the some what of the same problem. i had several bald spots in my head, severe breakage and eventually i did have to cut. i started paying better attention to my hair, but nothing worked me. i had always had long health hair but stress, over processing, heat, and a very poor diet made it fall out. but it's back now and here's what worked for me...prayer, i had someone lay hands on me and pray for my hair,i also go some olive oil prayed over it and had my mother annoint my scalp, with out that i know i would have never been able to even think about growing my hair out. we can pray and believe God for ANYTHING!!! even our hair, God said to cast all our care on Him, not just the ones we think are major. Ladies just prayer about this give it to God and watch Him work this thing out for you. i'll be a testimony for that and as my pictures are posted every one will see that my God is able!!!!!:)

I'm convinced that what you say is true.

Hey Sista Gurl...sounds like you got some really good information. Carrying on all things in prayer is definitely the answer. The power of prayer has brought you some wonderful advice from those of us who have suffered shedding too. If you wear a perm don't wait to retouch. I can't go more than 7 or 8 weeks. The new growth tends to break out my hair. I haven't heard many give props to extra washing but I am a firm believer in it. The more I wash each week, the slower my shedding gets. I can't say enough for Pantene Pro-V For Women of Color. They have a new line called breakage defense. They also sell a really nice hair mask that you can put on and sit under the dryer with. I also love profective...that moisturizer really turned my hair around a few years ago. Speaking of dryers, NO handheld, stop using heating appliances if you can, although I do need an occasional curling iron fix for emergencies. Nexxus doesn't work nearly as well as Infusion which if you use you will need to use a clarifying shampoo every few weeks. What I have suggested you can find in just about any drug store. I prefer Revlon No Lye Realistic Perm Relaxer. I use to steer away from no-lye because of fear of build up, but that perm has changed my ways. It gets my hair really straight and I use the regular not the super...and I don't have to flat iron. Try wearing braids for a while. In the past when my shedding got out of control and I started loosing hair I put it in braids (preferably individuals over corn rolls) and within 3 months my hair was back on track. Regarding diet....don't forget the importance of vitamins...protein is good (especially soy) but eating a lot of fruits and veges ( b vitamins, biotin ) as well as fish (I am a pescatarian too!) works wonders for the skin, hair and nails

It was the Ion intensive hair treatment. The one that comes in the little pack you buy at Sally's. I did it two weeks after I had my hair relaxed. I don't really use protein often but my hair had become stretchy. I have been moisturizing and it has let up a little but after I comb my hair its everywhere on my shoulders and comb with white bulbs on the end. I hope its just a passing phase.

Timehascome - AMEN!!! You are 1000000000000% RIGHT!!

Tnorenberg - thanks for the info. I'll be checking it out even though I'm hoping my prescribed shampoo is doing its thang.

Thank you for making this thread a sticky. I could just kiss you :)

My hair is not what it used to be. The front of my hair looks fuzzy and the back is short. When I tell people that they just look at the length/thickness and shrug it off. It is unfortunate that we have to go through this but God and the right products can get us through it. I was about to cry and found this sticky.

I'll keep you all updated.
