Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic Formula Change

I used to love this product when I did WnG regularly. I stopped buying it when my WnG became an occasional thing and I could not justify the cost of shipping it to me in Canada.

I heard the formula change had to do with a divorce, but the company could have made better choices with the new ingredients.

I feel like we might see it in Target or Sally's soon. They have made the ingredient listing follow labeling requirements (listing the extracts by proportion).

Maximum recommended usage for xanthan gum is 2% so everything below that is probably less than 2%.

Old Ingredients:
Aqueous-infused extracts of marshmallow, chamomile, horsetail and nettle, organic aloe vera juice, agave nectar extract, potassium sorbate, citric acid and a delightful natural fragrance.

New Ingredients:
Distilled Water, Vegetable Glycerin*, Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera)*, Xanthan Gum*, Organic Agave Nectar*, Althea Officinalis (Marshmallow) Root Extract*, Organic Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract*, Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail) Extract*, Organic Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E)*, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract*, Citric Acid*, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein*, Phenoxyethanol (preservative), Potassium Sorbate (preservative), Fragrance.

i am heartbroken, i know i can't use it because of the glycerin, don't understand why they did this to us:nono:

exactly why i have given up on buying products. I make flax seed gel now and just keep it moving.

I agree.....The glycerin and protein was so unnecessary. It was the PERFECT gel for my 4C hair. I hadn't bought any in a couple of years but I'm well-stocked for the next coupla years. Thank goodness!!!

I love CURL PREP Sweet Buttah and Curl Junkie's Pattern Pusha, too. Hope they don't change their formula.

OLD FORMULA -
Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Aqueous-infused extracts of marshmallow, chamomile, nettle & horsetail, vitamin E, agave nectar extract, citric acid, potassium sorbate & natural fragrance. ALL NATURAL.

NEW FORMULA
Distilled Water, Vegetable Glycerin*, Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera)*, Xanthan Gum*, Organic Agave Nectar*, Althea Officinalis (Marshmallow) Root Extract*, Organic Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract*, Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail) Extract*, Organic Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E)*, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract*, Citric Acid*, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein*, Phenoxyethanol (preservative), Potassium Sorbate (preservative), Fragrance

On the jars I purchased in 2012, Aloe Vera Juice is the first ingredient. Where did you get your listing from? Is the new formula change the 3rd formula change?

And a divorce, huh? Sounds like what happened to Sabina Moisture Block.

......There goes 3/4ths of their clientele. Smh. Maybe they'll wise up like Sabino did and bring the old thing back. People aren't privy to changes. As soon as they hear the formulation is different there goes the buzz.

Lord, vegetable glycerin as the second ingredient? They must not want people in the southeast to use their gel for any type of wash and go during the warmer months.

This is so unfortunate. I agree with someone saying it will hit stores soon. People aren't going to pay shipping and handling for vegetable glycerin and hydrolized wheat protein in a gel. :nono:

I know a lot of curlies who swear by this gel.

I never saw the hype in this stuff anyway. It costs too dam much. They are not slick by just adding a drop of the so called natural ingredients...might as well just buy some cheap Eco styler hahahaha

Bumping this old thread...

I emailed the owner of Hello Curly (formulator of the curly magic original formula) and asked her what thickener was used because theres no way to make a gel from aloe juice, herbal extracts and agave. I saw they changed the formula and the ingredient list was more intensive. The new formula had a thickening agent, but the old one didn't so I said to myself I wonder if it's xanthan gum. After going back and forth with Tonya (creator of the original formula) she said the thickener used in Hello Curly was xanthan gum and it was "mistakingly" left off the ingredient list.

Now thats shady as hell, so you mistakingly left off a ingredient for 4-5 years? UFD Curly Magic has been around since like 2008 or whatever. Makes you wonder what else they left off right? I'm thinking that this "new" formula is actually the original formula minus the protein maybe. As far as the vegetable glycerin goes, I think it actually has glycerin in it because the gel is very sticky and glycerin is often used to dissolve xanthan gum before adding it to a liquid. I honestly think the new owners of UFD didn't change the formula back, but rather just changed the ingredient listing to make people believe they changed back to the original. I mean if leaving vegetable glycerin off the ingredient list makes their product sell more, then it would make sense. How can you even tell if there is glycerin or not in a product? And what else are they leaving off the ingredient list? Very shady business TBH.

:bump: Is anyone currently using this?

I tried it earlier today but was way to heavy-handed in the application, as a result I'm rewash washing.
I'd like to hear the experiences of other LHCF users . Should this be used sparingly?

I told hairstylist Angela Hicks (stellar, stellar, stellar reviews at NaturallyCurly) that my main challenge was achieving an elongated wash and go that stayed moisturized.

She styled me with nothing but the new (original) UFD's Curl Stimulator. She raked and shingled liberally.

Best wash and go of life!!! Defined. Elongated. Moisturized. Lasted 3 days.
