Tyra's hairdresser Oscar James...

TYRA said she let another hairdresser double process her hair and wanted to get rid of the damaged colored hair. he did ambush her and cut her hair before the show and did not show if he put any thing on the hair to protect her hair and then used a Marcel stove iron on top of blow drying. If she was going to bash black women saying they can't shampoo every day and they have to use gel and a toothbrush, to get the hair to lay down. TYRA needs to have a show about what to use on black hair.

had to thank you twice. the part about taking down extensions and checking for a trim boggled my mind...if he is talking about women who heat-style on a regular basis (although i didn't see that specification), then why would hair that has been weaved up need to be trimmed?
i am looking for that stylist who only cuts 1/4". i hope he/she is in VA this week.

In a perfect world it wouldn't need to be but anytime hair is manipulated you run the chance of messing up clean ends. Braiding requires a lot of manipulation. And more than likely when a weave is installed the hair is blowdried with a comb attachment before it's braided so now you have heat + a lot of manipulation which could mess up clean ends. Then if the hair is not taken care of under the weave or gets dry (especially if you have color which is drying) - that could mess up clean ends. Some people tear through your hair or are rough with the comb when braiding. Also when taking the weave out they could be rough with it and that could mess up clean ends. There are lots of reasons why someone could need a trim. I would think that most people would need some type of trim after wearing braids or a weave for an extended period of time. I know I do.

ETA: To the people who are saying 6 to 8 weeks sounds random and ridiculous I think that comes from the whole trim when you touch up your relaxer notion. Most BW relax every 6 to 8 weeks. A fresh relaxer and fresh trim usually go hand and hand and that's also when most people's hair looks it's best.

 He's been "taking care" of her hair since she was 19...What's with all the damaged ends that he had to take off 3 inches, particularly if he's been trimming every 6 - 8 weeks?...Maybe I'm not as enlightened about hair care, but something ain't adding up here...

Well, I don't think her hair looked that bad. It's longer that what I see on average.

I was appalled when I heard how much he cut off, but he gave good reasons for why he cut off so much: to get rid of the color and to keep a blunt shape. I just hope with all the manipulation her hair has to go through now that it doesn't start to fall out.

I do not agree with trimming on a schedule. I've trimmed maybe 3 times in the last year, if that. So I disagree with him on that, but it's a common practice so *shrug*

I don't particularly agree with Tyra's stylists' views on trimming to "make" the hair grow; but that's one thing. Aside from not double processing the hair, he doesn't discuss any other aspects of hair care. What about the importance of moisture since AA is typically the driest? I didn't hear anything about DC'ing, applying moisture daily...nothing. It seems as if he was one dimensional: trim, trim, trim.

He's been caring for Tyra's hair since she was 19? How old is Ty-Ty now? At least 35 I would think. Honestly, I would have respected his view point more had Tyra's real hair been MBL at the very least. At least then, the proof would be in the pudding.

what about her edges. is that just her forehead or has her hair receded that much. thanks for his name, i will never be a client.

Um... No thnx, Oscar. I'll keep listening to my waist length & beyond LHCF sisters. Thnx anyway, though.
:yep::yep::yep::yep:

Girl I know that's right!! I think I'm going to listen to Oprah's hairstylist Andre since her natural hair is Thick Long and Beautiful and it made Tyra's hair look like a mustache!!!......Okay:look:

-question, if he was just trimming her hair to get rid of damaged ends, and he does her hair on a regular basis. why did he need to trim off three inches or more of her hair. if your hair grows at about 1/4 to 1/2 a month, when was the last time he did her hair? if he was maintaining the health of her hair he should have spotted this damage before it got to be 3 to 4 inches worth. naw, scissors itch in this man's hands.

-when i used to go the my cousin who is the only person i let do my hair for years. i would go every 3 to 6 months for a touch up. i would tell her to trim, she wasn't scissor happy, she would tell me that not that much needed to be cut. she was also leary of cutting too much. true my hair habits were difference than tyra but wear and tear is what it is.

So - this man has been doing her hair for 18 years. And her hair looks like that.:look::look:

DAMN. Proof enough for me to leave those "pros" with the celebs.

He was using MARCEL irons on Relaxed hair. NO wonder she had see through ends. WHO'S Fault was that????

I was through when I saw that.

I don't think O James was off the mark .. .. I have seen so many damaged heads of hair .. and women holding on to 3 strands of hair for the sake of length it is not funny ! They need to cut that mess ....
We know a lot about hair .. and many of us still struggle .. a lot women need to learn that trimming hair IS ok .. and it will help with the over all health of your hair .. but for that to be his only advice so far s silly... he should have given many more tips ...
Women will ask me all the time " what do you do" .. and then give me the crazy eye :spinning:when I tell them .. They don't want to do it , or even try ...
LOL ....doesn't mean I'm wrong ... it means that they don't get it ,YET .. lol :lachen:

Ok I didn't even read the whole article, I just kinda skimmed through. It just started off all kinds of wrong and I couldn't waste any more time with it. Did anyone email Tyra this forum?! Poor woman's so misinformed.

I agree you dont need to trim to get the hair to grow. If you are trimming to get rid of damaged ends, you will retain length better once the bad ends are gone.

People were wondering why her hair was only APL. But if her stylist trims it every two months, it's not surprising her hair isn't longer. I do think her hair looks very healthy. I didnt see the show I just saw the pics posted.

I just saw the "reveal" and heard the "tips"...and um, I am going to stick with the phrase "If you can't say something nice, don't say it all." No, wait a minute, I have to say this...I think Andre' was lurking around LHCF in recent years because Oprah has always had thick hair but just recently is when she was wearing the half wigs and "protective styles" and such and now look at her hair, feel me? As far as Oprah and Tyra, WHY hasn't LHCF been mentioned as one of the most helpful resources for black women's hair care? I just don't understand, I have been a member here since 2002 and no mention? Not one? Ok, I am done, to mid-back and beyond my lovely lhcf ladies! :)

I just checked out the website and the growth she got was from Seven years 1997-2004 and was from neck length to less then apl? I'm glad it worked for you but it seems that cutting that often is why it takes so long to get as far as you need to go. I do think that cutting off dead ends (split) is a necessity but then I think that Search and destroys and occasional trims go further in gaining more length faster. I think of dusting as 1/8th an inch and only when necessary, or more depending on if I have splits. Basically chopping just above any splits.

I don't know what her reason is for not gaining much length, but I would not discount the fact that her growth cycle might be as short as 2 years. Also I found trimming this way seemed to keep splits at bay. I never looked for them. I simply would start from the back, undoing one braid at a time and trimming the ends.

A 1/4 inch sound like a lot but it's only as long as this line __ . That's all I trimmed every 6-8 weeks. One-eighth of an inch is half the length of that line, with would be so hard to gauge let alone see, IMO.

If your hair is growing one inch in 8 weeks (normal growth rate of 1/2 an inch a month) and you lost 1/4 inch in that time, you'd have 3/4 of growth. So 3/4 of growth every 2 months would be 4.5 inches a year which might be what I had in those pics I posted.

IMO this method works because you do not wait to see the split ends. You trim them before they happen and so you keep your hair nice and thick all the way to the ends and avoid the ripping and thinning that comes from old worn out ends.

What does a trim really do for my hair? I don’t want my hair shorter.
OJ: What doesn’t it do? A good trim makes hair easier to comb and style, and always it makes it look much fuller. Although a trim can seem like a mini-haircut, don’t worry about your hair being shorter, trims actually help your hair grow.
Wrong wrong wrong wrong!!! :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

You would think a celebrity stylist would know the difference between RETENTION and GROWTH and that hair grows from the ROOTS. Cutting your hair or not cutting your hair has ZERO, NADA, ZILTCH, NOTHING whatsoever to do with GROWTH... period!

^^^ O-KAY?!?!?! They'd have to pay me Tyra's Salary for me to let him get next to me wit all that ignant mess.

Damn we need a international re-education when it comes to our hair...word up:nono: what a HAM

So I guess this provided some insight into your question about the "stark" difference between Oprah's hair and Tyra's. Her stylist is clearly an ignoramus. Poor Ty.

I have to slightly agree with tyra's stylist and Nonie. When I was not dusting my ends my hair retention was horrible and my ends were very unattractive. Now that my stylist dust my ends are split free and healthy. However I do disagree with his suggestion on how often you should trim. My stylist only dust with my permission (about a 1/4 of an inch) every 14 to 16 weeks or more.

He did say that. And damaged ends do need to be cut off in order for your hair to appear to be growing. But we call that retention around these parts. IDK why everybody is crucifying the man for the saying the same thing black stylists have been saying to us for years. The premise makes sense. It just wasn't worded properly.

But also everything isn't for everybody. I know my hair needs to be trimmed more often if I wear it out or down and manipulate it or not. Less often if it's in protective styles. If not, it will get caught/snag when I'm trying to comb it. I also get tangling and one strand knots when it's close to trim time.

Thank you. Nice long hair is just an accumulation of healthy hair. Trims can help maintain and increase the health of hair.

Ummm Dear Tyra
Please seek a second Opinion, May I suggest the guy that works on Oprah?

Sincerely
a concerned hairaholic

although i agree with y'all, we have to keep in mind that tyra has been getting her hair colored, braided, weaved/wigged and who knows what else. she was apl b4 he cutting those ends...hence "we had to cut almost three inches off". if she had a head full of long colored/relaxed has been coloring and maybe relaxing on a regular which i'm sure she has been, i think her length may be about right...if getting her au natural hair in the average amount of time. BUT my only ? i would have for him is...how long did it take for him to get trya's natural length b4 i just up and oust him away from my head.

Has anyone seen the styles she's been rocking on her show? I was on the Tyra Show website looking at Friday's preview and she had some type of
ponty tail/ braid out looking thing. It looks good

I just do not believe Trimming makes the hair grow. Why do Hair Stylist always make that statement?:perplexed
If your ends are damage.....then yes a trim is needed.....but if not....why trim unless it is necessary.
He has been doing her hair for fifth-teen years and that is all the length she has retained.
Whatever man:violin:

That man would not be my Hair Stylist.

Don't put all hairdressers in the same category, TYRA should have been trimming those end way before he cut 3 inches off, but you could tell she is fearing those scissors cause he waited to get her on camera were she could not resist him to do what he had to do and remove the damaged hair. I think he has been trying to it, he is not the only one doing her hair she said she let another hairstylist put the color in her hair.

Thank you. And I agree with you. I think he has been trying to remove that damaged hair but you know how we try to hold on to every single inch even when those inches prevent the hair from being what we want it to be.
