Getting your ends cut regular or when it's about time (not waiting until you have two inches of split ends) will help you achieve your goal without all the set backs?

and cutting split ends when need help u achieve because ur not breaking of at the ends as much?

Yes, getting your ends trimmed (on a particular basis) helps retention since you're eliminating the split or tattered ends and preventing them from doing further damage up the hair shaft. It can help retention but depending on your hair, trimming might not be enough. You might need to go the extra step of protecting your ends after through moisturizing and sealing or whatever method you choose.

EDIT: I feel like I need to tell you this, you might know it already but there is NO WAY you can repair a split. Even if a product claims they can, that's just good marketing to target customers. You can bond it together with the ingredients in conditioners and serums but there's no possible way to repair a split.

I am pro-trimming and I was reminded why at my past appointment. A spilt end will eventually break off and take good hair with it. Two weeks ago pre-trim I washed my hair and there were little broken pieces everywhere and the ends were popping off in my hands. I hadn't been trimmed in a while. I went to the salon and got an adequate but not over zealous trim(it doesn't take much) and they stopped. I washed my hair Sunday and I lost not one piece of hair. I was amazed.

Yes trim. I just wrote a long rambly post on how my own no trim challenge did me no good and i cut off a few inches last night.

You cannot repair a split ( dont let marketing fool you) when it breaks off it takes good hair with it, where it breaks off leaves a new jagged split end, and the damage just travels up your hair shaft and eats away at your progress.

You dont have to trim off perfectly good ends, but you arent dping yourself favors by skipping on trims to retain.

I learned this the hard way last year. From August 2010 to August 2011 I didn't trim and I had to cut a few inches because of my shredded ends after a year of no trimming.

Split ends hurt growth retention so once a month I like to take 1/8 inch off or search and destroy. Otherwise the parts of your hair that are split, break off and cause thinning of your overall length overtime. I've had to learn the hard way time and time again.

In fact I'm gonna dust my ends this week.
