I'm almost sure that this has been discussed. But I cound'nt find it in the search function. Or maybe I don't know how to use the search function.

My ends are ragged and I think my stylist takes too much off. I wanna try it on my own.

My hair is in twists right now, so I was thinking about about cutting about 1/2 inch off the ends of each twist. Or maybe I should blow dry it and then cut it. My is in layers to which makes it extra hard.

Anyone wanna bite?????? Which method works best for you?

I've trimmed my hair using both methods that you've mentioned. I think you should use the twist method being that you have layers which may make it hard for you to trim accurately. Also take into consideration how you wear your hair most of the time. If you wear it in twists or natural styles the majority of the time use the twist method. If you straighten/roller-set alot then use the blow-out method.

Your hair is beautiful by the way!

I've also done both methods. I think twist method is the easiest and I get more even results from that method.

I think the last two times I trimmed my hair was in twists. What I did was look at the ends of my twists and snip of a quarter to half an inch depending on if I thought one twist needed more taken off than another. It looks pretty even when it's combed out.

I'm thinking that the next time I flat iron, I should check the ends and see how even they are and maybe give them a trim if needed.

i find the twist method easier for me...i never wear my hair straight, so, theres no need to do it that way...plus, i like to avoid the heat as much as possible...

and i agree with carefree...your hair is absolutely beautiful!

I always blow mine out before cutting.
1. I want to cut as little as necessary
2. I want my hair to look even when I straighten it and the only way to ensure that is to cut it while it's straight
3. It's easier to see the split ends when the rest of the shaft is straight

The downside is that this is harder to do than the twist method if you're doing it solo. Usually I have a close friend help me out so that I keep everything even (esp. in the back).

I trim my hair a couple of ways. Sometimes I trim my hair when it's wet. Sometimes I trim my hair after a blow out. It just depends on how I'm going to style my hair afterward. When I trim wet or dry it is always the same process.

I usually part the section of my hair that I want trimmed and I hold the rest of my hair back with clips. I then separate the parted section into smaller sections and I stretch the hair in-between my fingers. Stretching the hair insures that you won't trim off too much. I then use my sheers and trim off an equal amount from each small part within the parted section. After I have trimmed the parted section I twist, braid or bantu knot the section that I cut. I then repeat these steps all over my head.

Tips:
-Make sure that you buy a real pair of trimming sheers. I bought a nice pair from sallys on sale for $6.99. If you use regular pair of scissors from around the house you could end up doing more harm than good to your ends. The sharper the scissors the better the trim.

-Make sure that you trim your hair in a place where you won't be surprised by loud noises. You don't want to accidentally butch off a huge part of your hair because a loud racket surprised you.

-Make sure that you take your time if you are nervous about trimming off too much.

-Remember to trim off a little less than you think you should. Nappy hair is not like straight hair when you trim. If you trim off 1/8" you are ACTUALLY trimming off about 1/4" because of shrinkage.

-After you have trimmed a section make sure that you twist or braid the section that you have already trimmed. You don't want to re-trim the section that you have already cut.

Some folks trim their hair after their hair has been twisted or braided. All you do is twist and snip the ends. I’ve never done it this way but a lot of folks on NP do this.

Good Luck!
Trimming is pretty easy!

This is how I do it, too. I've tried trimming with the two-strand twists before, and my hair ended up too uneven. I will never do it like that again.

i have a question....do you all use the special hair sheers, or just any old random (sharp) scissors???

ETA: looks like AFS answered my question!! i was about to buy those scissors at sally's yesterday!! i may go back for them!

Thanks Shantani and Carefree. Now that's a compliment coming from the two of you.

So, I tried trimming in the twist method last night. And it came out okay. But I was thinking that my hair eventually will look uneven because I don't have a lot of shrinkage. My hair is loosely wavy.

Afashionslave, I think I'll try your method next time.
