This is how I trim my hair except I don't straighten it. I get a perfect "V" cut every time.
@curlicarib, my hair grows in a "V" as well. Do you do the single ponytail or part down middle and do 2 ponytails? I want to get better at trimming but want to maintain the "V". Thanks!
I think it would be blunt if she stopped at the one ponytail trim but when you do the two ponytails in front that results in a V or U shape.I'm confused. So, you don't get a straight, blunt cut across?
I have been traumatized from trying to trim my own hair in 2012. My self trim did not save my hair. I went from below waist to my bra-strap. BUT, I keep revisiting this topic because I really want to be independent with my trims. I can't figure out why I don't 'get' how to self trim.

This is basically a video version of what Feye showed us years ago... >>> http://feyeselftrim.livejournal.com/
@Chicoro Dont worry you'll get it. I've messed up before too. Im actually on a growth mission right now from when I was trying out new trimming methods and cutting too much off. I did similar to you where I kept going back and trying to fix it and it doesn't help that my left side grows longer and thicker than my right. It makes trimming so hard for me and I loose length trying to even it up. I still don't know what the solution is but I've gone back to trimming in one low pony instead of trying to do layers in one high pony. The high pony works very well but I don't think I want layers anymore. I also do the two pony trim after the one pony and it works well. I never notice if I have a V or a U from it because I never wear my hair straight.AHA!!!!!!
I used used the feyeselftrim method and I think I finally understand what "I" did wrong.
I started off with the 1 pony tail in the back trim, and then I parted my hair down the center for 2 braids and trimmed those to even it up. I thought I was "evening up" my hair but what I did was I gave myself an ugly U shape [U shapes are not ugly, but the U shape I created for myself was very ugly. I realize now that I gave myself an inverted U] which was not what I wanted. I also looked straight ahead when I did the 1 pony tail trim. I just now noticed this from Fey when I re-read her information just now:
"Update: I'm now tilting my head to look at the floor instead of looking straight forward. This produces even better results. If the head and the eyes are facing straight forward, then the shape will end up like a very slight inverted U with the sides a tiny bit longer than the middle. If the head is tilted so that you are looking towards your toes, the middle part will be even in length with the sides."
Then, I went back to the pony tail and 'tried' to trim it up even again and did the 2 braids again, and the next time I got that V shape. I think I repeated this 3 or 4 times. In essence, I kept cutting to the shortest part of the U and V, trying desperately to get that blunt result. I was so intent on getting that blunt cut across, that by the time I 'looked up' I had a hair cut and 'lost' 10 to 12 inches.
Thank you so much @Vshanell and @ AnjelLuvsUBabe. Your two quotes above combined triggered my memory. I see how the self butchering of my hair transpired. In retrospect, I was so embarrassed and could not fathom how I could have arrived at cutting off so much hair all it once, before my own eyes, with my own hands. Although all the cutting happened in 1 session, it was so gradual that I didn't realize what I was doing.
The only way to fix a trim is to leave it alone, let it grow back and try again. I tried to fix my trim by cutting some more. That is a hard lesson learned I won't soon forget.
I was trimming my hair this way and it works well if you want layers.
But now I'm gonna trim more like this for less layers. I've done this method before and I like it
So it's not so blunt. I never do itWhat is the point of "point cutting" in the first video?

Part in the middle, pull to the front. I don't band my hair either. But I think I will next time I trim.
@Daina, Welcome! Just make sure that you smooth your hair and pull it taunt. And use the same landmark on your body for both sides.
