Trim/Dust every 8 weeks or major trim 6 months later, isn't it the same hair lost?

I was just wondering about this. In some threads many complain about having to do a major trim and count it as a setback.

Wouldn't this be the same amount of hair you would've lost if you had trimmed little by little every two months or so?

The only difference is that now it is cumulative.

Please chime in. I am in the latter group. I need a major trim, I have splits up the wazoo, but isn't this the same hair I would have gotten rid of if I trimmed it little by little?

Just wondering if this could have been prevented or it is the same hair loss and no worse for time I spent procrastinating...

the thing is...when u wait for a loooong period of time to trim, u run the risk of getting more splits or deeper splits from pre-existing ones. the longer u hold on those suckas the worse it can get. Thats why im a big fan of dusting every couple of weeks as needed. Ur ends are getting a clean and fresh start and if u r taking care of them...u may not have to dust that much. Splits dont run on a time schedule

Okay, I think that is what I wasn't comprehending until I got to this point:

I will probably have to get an inch or so cut, they are unbelievably high. I understand now. :(

I agree with you. If you have major splits, go ahead and get them trimmed. Dusting will keep new splits at bay, but only if hair is healthy and split free to begin with. I haven't trimmed since November, but I definitely needed a dusting. I finally found someone who understands what that means (1/4 inch or less so it doesn't even look like a trim), so I'm going to try dusting monthly. I remember reading that Tracyee does this along with regular search and destroys, and she still went from APL to WL in one year.

I also agree with your point that once all the bad ends are gone, you won't need to dust or trim very often if you protect and take care of your ends.

It's been about a year since I've had a salon trim. I have become a search and destroy queen. I purchased a pair of $60 shears from Sally's after my trim. The computer screen gives the best light to examine your ends. I S&D every week. By doing it so often I'm a step ahead of the split. If I see a white speckled end, it's destroyed. I plan to trim once I reach brastrap to get rid of some of my layers.

This is ME to the tee. I havent had a trim in over a year but im OBSESSED with my ends - to the point i cut them in the car and at work - pple think im nuts. i hope this method works. i want to reach MBL or WL b/f i get a real trim which would basically be just for the look of thickness

But if u are going to do more frequent trims - every 3 months is better than every 6 months - not just b/c of the splits traveling up but b/c u wont have to see ur hair get so close to ur goal only to get so many inches cut and then feel like its a 'set-back'. I used to have mine trimmed every 3 months but im a slow grower so i had to change my approach

I'm a "search and destroy" aficionado myself. I don't get trims to eliminate split ends. I get trims to give my ends a "neat" appearance. Since I don't wear my hair out, I don't concern myself to much with ends that are different lengths.

I probably get a trim 1-2 times a year just to neaten things up. Otherwise, I look through my hair for splits and take them out one by one. I think this method works best (for me) because 1) splits "ends" aren't always at the end and 2) why take out the healthy, un-split ends just to get rid of a few splits?

I use the tv screen .
