Transitioners and naturals...Do you detangle in the shower? or on dry hair?

I'm a transitioner. I've tried both, and I've found that detangling damp, moisturized hair causes the least breakage for me. :yep:

I think she's right, damp may cause less breakage

but if you're a shedder like me? baaaaabe'!!!! damp is not the bizness:nono:

I have to be 80-90% dry

and which causes less breakage?

I do not detangle in the shower :nono::nono: For me, trying to detangle this stuff in the shower is just plain dee-dee-dee.

I DO detangle fully clothed, free to roam and on my own time schedule. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes, sometimes longer if I've been wearing an out style from plaits or twists (especially the itty bitty ones). I dampen the hair first with water or con/water mix and gently detangle the hair a section at a time.

I only lose shed hair or hair caught in an SSK. I get very little breakage. I don't run out of hot water. Do not waste water and do not have to stand there and let my skin to do the prune shrivel because I'm trying to rush through a head full of long, thick and wet natural hair.

Ahhhhhhhhhh - life's gooooood :lachen:

I do mine on hair after it's been pre-poo'd/DC'd on dry hair outside of the shower. Doing it in the shower causes too much shedding for me.

I detangle on wet, conditioned hair with my wide tooth comb in the shower. I primarily wet bun, so this is the only time I comb my hair. I lose too much hair if I wait until it starts to dry.

1. Lynnie B your hair is truly beautiful.

2 I could have written this post :yep:except I use grapeseed oil and seamless combs. I am still dealing with relaxed ends. Like literally 98-99% shed hair is all I lose, they just slide out. For me breakage is caused by me rushing, which I try not to do. mostly 3c fine/dense

I never detangled in the shower when I was natural in the past. Conditioners like vo5 breaks my hair right on down. Shower detangling was not effective as a transitioner with the jilbere comb, resulted in new/interesting knots and broken hair(by me). Washing and conditioning in plaits= no need to detangle further.

I also found I can "detangle" my relaxed ends if I want to by letting it dry for an hour first, but I don't really do that.

I always ALWAYS detangle on wet hair with conditioner on it while in the shower. First pass is usually with a wide toothed comb, followed by a pass with my Denman.

I always detangle in sections and my hair is usually in eight sections.

I don't remember the last time I personally detangled my hair damp or dry...it has to have been several years.

70% of the time I detangle my hair while wet. But many times while I pre-poo, I detangle when my hair is still dry, but moist. I WILL NOT start washing my hair when it's fully tangled dry.

I detangle conditioned hair, in the shower, under the stream, in sections, with a Jibere comb. I've only been doing this for a few months maybe, and it has helped me A LOT. Breakage nearly nil.

This is how I detangle as well. It's the best and gentlest way for me but out of laziness I do detangle in the shower sometime if my hair isn't really tangled bad.

Your hair is amazing Lynnie! Love your siggy.:lick:

My hair isn't very dense so I can detangle with a denman in the shower in much less than 10 mins. Only with the right conditioner though, a mix of the slippery conditioner and the running water makes my detangling very fast and I haven't noticed any breakage.
My second vote is out of the shower on conditioner loaded hair, this takes much longer though.
oh and I love my hair catcher, no more blocked drains!

Damp hair (out the shower), after applying my leave in conditioner. This worked best for me both as a transitioner and now that my hair's natural.

I detangle under running water in the shower. I did that during my entire transition (17.5 months) and I continue to do that now that I am fully natural. My hair gets almost completely straight under water, so with conditioner in it detangling my entire head takes about 4 minutes.

I detangle under running water with a wide-toothed comb. My hair is wet with conditioner as I'm detangling. It works for me and I will continue when I'm fully natural. Dry hair, for me, will never be combed.

under water with hair drenched in conditioner and a wide tooth comb..takes an hour and i end up with sore arms and week legs from standing but i gets it done.

I detangle in the shower in 4 sections with conditioner, DIRECTLY under the shower stream. The weight of the water makes it easier for the comb to only have to get rid of the real hardcore tangles as the water melts away the less serious ones. So for me, I have much less breakage.

I detangle on dry hair with tons of conditioner prior to each wash...makes it much easier to comb conditioner through after my wash.

I used to use a wide tooth comb in the shower but I decided that I would comb my hair less often(low manipulation). So when my hair has just been shampooed or has conditioner on it I use my fingers to gently separate sections of my hair if they are stuck together or slightly tangled. Then once my hair has air dryed I will add some moisture and then do more detangling if needed.:look:

Dripping wet hair/ conditioner filled hair in the shower, 2 sections with wide tooth comb. If it's been a while, I follow up with Denman.

I don't really manipulate my hair when it's dry- once I detangle in the shower, thats it til I wash again.
