edges
--------------------------------------
I'm trying to grow back my edges and have had no relaxer put on my hair for 6 months (none on my edges for 8 months). All I've got to show for this hard work are baby fine hair like those on my arm (they aren't as straight as those but resemble and grow with the same speed as my armpit... sorry to gross you out

)
My hair is way past shoulder length and growing but this hairline thing is pitiful. Castor oil didn't do a thing, I'm not good with swallowing vitamins or any pill for that matter but my hair care routine/regimen is on point. My old self would have been miserable but I'm trying to put into practice St. Francis prayer of Serenity.
Those who have this problem due to braids, bad hair care, tracts et al, could you please post what product you were successful with and how much hair you've gained.

Re: Traction alopecia.....how are you restoring yo

So sorry the castor oil didn't work for you myhairsos, After 6 months of wearing braids I used castor oil on my edges and 5 months later they have completely filled in.

Re: Traction alopecia.....how are you restoring yo

I'm currently researching minoxidil (sp?) and rogaine but I've read that they cause increased heart rate. Don't want to worsen my situation and worse still, I chicken out when it comes to swallowing tablets. I'm going to go back to the castor oil again.
Thanks for the input. Anybody else?

Re: Traction alopecia.....how are you restoring yo

Myhairsos, have you tried Healthy Hair in a Bottle (Sassygirl swears by it) or rosemary essential oil mixed with aloe vera gel massaged into the area (DelightfulFlame has had great results with that). Someone else posted the wonders of a concoction of natural oils when massaged into her scalp about a week ago. Sorry I don't remember who or what the mixture was. Maybe a search for the word "massage" may bring up the thread. Emu oil was one of her ingredients and I have read that it wakes up your hair follicles so it's great for hairgrowth.

Good luck!

Re: Traction alopecia.....how are you restoring yo

Myhairsos, minoxidil WILL make your hair grow back. It won't be thick like your previous hair and any hair you grow back will fall off if you stop using it. Before trying minoxidil, I'd try the natural methods first. I am not a fan of any "treatment" that requires me to become an addict or else I'm doomed.

How do you wear your hair? If you don't mind bangs, I'd wear them so that you're not pulling your hair back in a way that could aggravate the situation. Check out this website, particularly this page. Perhaps there might be sth there that might help or at least encourage you.

Re: Traction alopecia.....how are you restoring yo

i agree with the scalp massages as well as the suppliments, but im sorry u dont like taking them...those braids are something else....they will leave ya bald.....my sides have grown back but still short..about 2-3 inches, its taking some time to grow them long.....

Re: Traction alopecia.....how are you restoring yo

I also agree with scalp massages, I forgot to mention I massaged the castor oil into my scalp twice a day. Maybe you could mix it like nonie suggested, you need to stimulate your scalp.

Re: Traction alopecia.....how are you restoring yo

Just got back from class. Thanks ladies for the suggestions. I'll keep working at it. I'm religiously doing the castor oil thingy and will look into the healthyhair in a bottle product.

One more thing, do you think I should go ahead and do a touchup or give the edges more time to grow?

I'd wanted to wait till March of next year but the patches I see are just not encouraging. It's growing in but the length tapers from the edge closest to my ears to my forehead (the edges closest to my ears are so long that if you stretch them, they extend to my earlobes but my forehead is the crisis region)

Re: Traction alopecia.....how are you restoring yo

I had traction allopecia and Carols Daughter Khoret Amen Oil really really worked in helping with that area

Re: Traction alopecia.....how are you restoring yo

Do not touch up your edges. Touching them up will not make them any better.

Re: Traction alopecia.....how are you restoring yo

I actually meant texturizing (blow out) the whole hair. I might have to get a wig for my graduation picture. Oh well:(
