Can someone shed light some light on the reason why hair sheds more around touch-up time /images/graemlins/confused.gif

My hair sheds more around touch-up time when I comb it. I think it's because the newgrowth is very thick and gets tangled, but I'm not sure. I am experiencing this right now, because I'm 11 weeks post relaxer. I'm going for 14 weeks.

I dont think my hair sheds any more around touchup time --even though it does appear that way. The reason i dont think so is because i'm assuming that with more newgrowth (which for me is very kinky) that the hair is getting caught on each other as it's getting shed. Which means that i have hairs that have shed and intertwined with my hair that's not shedding. That way whenever i comb it, it looks like i'm shedding more because the shed hairs have been accumulating each day that werent able to "get loose" after shedding on their own. Ya know what i mean? I know it sounds wacko, but that's what i think.

I really never noticed more shedding around touch-up time. My hair normally sheds the same amount throughout my whole life. I've never expereienced a lot of shedding. The only time I did was for a couple of months after I stopped taking Accutane...

I think it happens because before getting a touch-up, we are allowing our hair to grow without applying a relaxer yet. While we have that new growth, there may be even more hair trying to grow in. When hair is shed, the protein hair strand is pushed out of the hair follicle to make room for a new hair. IMO, I think relaxers, in a way, make our hair stronger by helping our hair grow in easier without shedding as much. But some experience shedding after getting a touch-up, so it all depends on certain people's heads. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Anyway, I found some information on the internet about the hair phases that shedding occurs in.../images/graemlins/think.gif maybe your hair is in these stages around your touch-up time:

Transition Phase

After a definite period of growth, the hair follicle goes into a transitional phase. New cells are not created at this stage. Instead, the hair follicle actually shrinks about 82%. Part of the hair root is destroyed, and the active dermal papilla breaks off from the rest of the hair follicle. This transition phase (from growth to resting) is called catagen, and lasts one or two weeks.

Resting Phase

In the resting phase, telogen, like the transition phase, the protein hair strand remains connected to the hair follicle, but it doesn't grow. After five or six weeks, the dermal papilla reconnects to the base of the hair follicle and the bloodstream. The hair reenters the active-growth phase and a new hair begins to form.

The old hair strand is usually shed near the end of the resting phase. If it does not shed, the new active-growth phase pushes the old hair out (sheds it) to make room for the new strand of hair.

HTH! /images/graemlins/weird.gif

I know one thing I'm noticing now is more shedding at first I was like oh no is my hair breaking, but they all have the root on them. But then I thought about it, when my hair used to shed it would be all caught in my fro and it wouldn't come out until I cleared it out with a comb or brush. Now my hair just sheds everyday (like it is supposed to) but it doesn't get caught in anything so I see it more.
