Today's horror story: My co-worker's regimen...

Yeah I'm trying to see what's wrong too. They wash twice a month, moisturize daily, and the brush thing is different but hey I'm sure it protects their hair from getting roughed up by the comb

I love my co-worker dearly.

We've worked together several years and are pretty close.

She's old-school glam like a 50-something Diahann Carroll.

She and her teenage daughter visit their stylist maybe once every 2-3 weeks.

They literally do NO maintenance at home. But somehow they manage to look pretty flyy.

Today we started talking our hair and she said she needed a retouch and was going to get one next week...and we started talking about her daughter's hot new bob.

So I asked how her daughter maintans the style. She replied that her daughter wraps her hair every night. She doesn't wash it at all, they both just wait to go to the shop during their bimonthly visit and get shampooed and DC'd.

I'm like, "You don't wash in between visits AT ALL?"

She replied, "Not at all. We just do what the folks where I come from do--it's kinda old school, Pink Gator--but we take an old stocking, wrap it over a bristle brush and BRUSH the dust and lint out of our hair...take off the stocking and discard the gook off it."

I was TOO done! Now I've heard of--and I've done it, too--to remove lint off clothes before lint brushes/rollers came along, but not for hair!

Still in shock...
Thats is old school but it works.

Mama used to do me like that every now and then.

ETA: I am one of those who washes my hair as needed, which is about every other week or so.

Well, when I press my hair, I won't wash for 2 weeks. My hair smells fine ( I have a sensitive nose and so does my mom, she'd tell me in 2 seconds if she smelled something funky). I never had any problems with 'gunk' either. I just put some coconut oil on the ends. Before college I'd go even longer without washing (I won't even say how long for fear of being stoned to death :look:), and my hair flourished. My hair's never been shorter than a bit above bra-strap length.

I don't know where the gunk and lent is coming from though.

I'm still waiting to hear what's so horrible about this....

Me too.

The regimen isn't for me, but I guess I can't really say anything bad about it. Bimonthly means every two weeks, right? I know some people who may even be members on this forum who go about 2 or 3 weeks between washings to preserve straight looks or hairstyles. They have tricks of keeping their hair neat looking as well :yep:.

:yep:

I agree. My hair idol (who I will not mention) has beautiful relaxed hair and she washes 2x a month. Different strokes for different folks :yep:

That's the idol I was talking about :yep:

Yep, I knew it, you and I have the same hair idol and I am so about to adopt her method. Sylver2's hair is not sticky though:nono:, so I can see that being a turn off and the thought of brushing off dust sounds a little weird too. My hair personally does best when I wash less frequently and leave it alone. I have gotten more damage and breakage from those frequent conditioner washes...

I can't even lie, when I relaxed, I think I went 3 or 4 weeks without washing lol BUT my hair never got funky smelling or looking for that matter. Hell, it's freezing cold now and I flat ironed my hair...the week before my birthday? My birthday was the 26th. It's still straight and I will work this style till next week probably cause I have ish to do....PLUS it's blustering cold here!!!! My fiance even just mentioned today that my hair is smelling and looking nice. I brush it everyday though, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Actually, in countries/cultures where water is scarce, using gallons upon gallons for showering and hair washing on a daily basis is unheard of. One of the ways people clean their hair is by using a cloth (silk or other) and a brush. I've never done it, but I have read about it. Hopefully, I will never have to have such a regime because I love washing my hair and life without a bubble bath is quetionable at best.

But this is done is many places in the world.
I know that's right! :lachen::lachen::lachen:

This wouldn't work for me...mainly 'cause I don't brush my hair. But I could see someone doing this. Long as they aren't globbing a bunch of heavy products on their scalp, I think it would be ok.

As a little girl, I know I didn't get my hair washed every week. Especially if my sister put in some type of braided style.

Well, I can say for certain that my hair does better with bimonthly washes, as opposed to every 3-4 washes. I've tried both ways. Wearing my hair natural with twists and twist outs reaped many more split ends and breakage. My hair basically would twist and tangle within itself. When I wash, blowdry and press twice a month, I don't have to manipulate it as much. In fact, like Sylver, I don't even comb it. I use my fingers to detangle. My hair was the longest it ever was doing this, so don't knock your friend...if they look fly, they must be doing something right.

I wash my hair every week, or week and a half, if it's airdried or I'm wearing it curly. But if I've blowdried and flat ironed my hair, I try to make it last two weeks. I keep my scalp clean, and I've never had issues with gunk or smelly hair.

I think about water supply too.. we are very blessed in this country, we don't know what we have. Sometimes I feel guilty for how often and how long I wash/rinse my hair in the shower.. frequent washes and rinses are a luxury, not a necessity.

My mom used to use a brush and stocking cap on our hair when we were little, in between washing. She called it a "dry shampoo". I haven't done it since elementary school though.

Took the words right out of my mouth...

I'm an every 2 weeker also (when I wear my hair straight) and I can assure my hair isnt gross with gunk and lint.

I've heard of it. I have even had it done. My mother did it for me when I had damaged scalp (of course from a very bad relaxer) that kept flaking so after I wash and dried, she'd do that so I didn't have to go out with flaky hair. She did it until my scalp got better. It's really really old school.

I think what is so horrible about it is the fact that she doesnt wash her hair but every other month. That is what Bimonthly means.
You wash your body everyday (I hope we all do) so why would you wash your hair everyother month. I am not saying wash your hair everyday but once a week...heck everyother week is better than everyother month.

I am sorry if I offend anyone and I truly mean that. Personally I think thats reflects poor hygene.

Someone else said that frequent washes is a luxury not a necessity and I think that is not correct. To cleanse ones body is also a way of dissinfecting ones self of germs. I work in a clinic and we are expected to rid ourselves of certain debris (germs) we may pick up from shaking hands or sweating. This is most definately a necessity. Again poor hygene. Without proper hygene we have the spread of disease.

whatever works for her. everyone dosen't wash frequently and everyone definately isn't a fan of co washing. personally, i have to at least co wash every couple of days but, if she likes it.. awesome. now, if u want to tell some hair horror stories let's talk about people that wrap their hair.. and proceed to GLUE tracks on top of their wrap ( a good friend of mine does this and she has zero edges )....... :(

Well actually she said every 2-3 weeks and then she said "biomonthly" (bimonthly) which could mean every 2 months or twice a month. I'm assuming she means 2 times a month since again she mentioned every 2-3 weeks just before that.

Just my 5 cents. If she means 2 x a month i'm not seeing what the big fuss is about. Sounds a little hair snobbish to me LOL.

Thank you for clarifying SouthernStunner, I just noticed that was biMONTHLY and not biWEEKLY! I went biweekly many times in college when I literally didn't have the time to wash and about a week and a half without washing would just throw my hair in a ponytail. When I first started transitioning I would go biweekly because I was terrified to wash my own hair...but biMONTHLY!! That is just unheard of! My scalp itches so bad when I go 2 weeks without washing that I would probably pull it out if I went every other month!

Um, my mom actually does this. She absolutely hates to wash her hair. She actually just bought some dry shampoo (some kind of spray) from Sephora the other day. Anyways, my mom's hair is about waist-length and is very healthy. I mean, I wouldn't do that stocking cap thing, but I grew up seeing her do it often. The first time, I was like, "what the heck." She usually does this as one of her "tricks" when she has waited longer than she needs to wash her hair. Her hair doesn't smell at all and is super moisturized; her favorite thing is Moisture Max.

well, it seems we just come here to discuss other people's issues and how gross they are, and that kind of talk will not help my hair get any longer

If she is washing every two weeks and DCing, then that is a pretty good regimen. If its every two months, even though I won't do this to my hair, I pretty much can't judge because I have gone about that long with braids on in the past

I used to wait every two weeks for my stylist to wash, DC, and set my hair. But I have nevaeva nevvvvva heard of using a stocking cap and brush to get the lint off of the hair.

Ok my mom used to do that with my and my sisters hair when we were young. Its fine if you are wearing it in ponytails, which we were. I can not imagine it on a "grown lady" hairstyle.:nono: I see why it looks like helmet. As I enter my 19th month of transition i understnd. I have gotten lazy with my hair and dont do the weekly washes like i used to (hey low mani right:look:). I am interested to see if it carries an odor because that is what makes me wash more often.

I don't think washing twice a month is nasty automatically.

From what you described with the brushing out of the lint... ewww. I your hair is linty/sticky in that time, then maybe it is a problem.

But some people (myself included) don't sweat in the scalp. I wash weekly, but I am positive I can go 2-3 weeks without any smells or anything.

Some people start getting funky after a few days, some people can go a long time.

I think that since we learned "the right" way to take care of our hair, we can be OVERLY critical and judgemental. If people don't follow "our" rules, it can't be right?

Washing every 2 weeks? It works for some people. It's not like she said every 2 months

hey..im confused..is it every 2 weeks or every 2 months?
im a every 2-3 week washer and my hair never smelled..ever. no lint or gunk unless i was rollin on the floor..lol. even if it was 2 months.. diff strokes for diff folks. u said their hair still looked good right..lol

I keep reading and re-reading the OP and I don't get what is nasty/what the issue is???
The washing every 2 weeks thing? Or the brushing?
Bimonthly could actually mean 2x/month or every 2 months :ohwell:
If it's every 2 weeks then no biggie but if it's every 2 months is yeah that is pretty gross imo.

^^^ I'm confused too.

Bi weekly = every 2 weeks. Bi monthly = every 2 months. Bi weekly washes are common outside of the hair boards for AA women.

thank you for clearing bi-weekly and bi-monthly for everyone loulou82. But I must agree that the OP message is confussing does she mean every 2 weeks or everyother month. AGAIN if is every 2 weeks then its ok. If it is every other month I think that is nasty. If that makes me a hair snob....ok I will take that but then that also make me a hygentiaclly proficient person as well. I told my DH this story and he said "everyone doesnt think like you do and that is ok but it teaches you not to eat at everyone home too! Their hygene may not be in line with yours".

So I will agree to disagree and may we forever be hair sister girlfriends.

A few years ago I suffered from dry scalp and bad dandruff. A friend of mine said that to get rid of the "flakes" when I was done styling my hair was to take a brush, apply a stocking to the brush and brush my hair.

It really worked. I never had one dandruff flake showing in my hair or or on my clothes when I did this method. I still washed my hair once a week but even then I would still suffer from dandruff flakes. A quick fix before leaving my room was the bristle brush stocking method.

Disclaimer: I only used the method to rid my hair of dandruff flakes. I myself have never gone more then 1.5 week without washing my hair.
