To Whom Much Is Given...

Supergirl

With Love & Silk
Today was my touch-up day at JC Penney's Salon. I've been going to this stylist for a year now and am pleased. Even in moving further away, I have chosen to make the drive it takes to get to her.

Today was also the last day of the relaxer sale. I made a day out of it by getting my hair rinsed black (Cellophane), getting my brows waxed and even a pedicure.

So, I expected my bill to be alittle high, but remembered that there should be a break for the relaxer. I was utterly surprised when I was given my total.

I am usually charged a $5 "long hair" charge, but this time I was charged a $15 mid-back length charge. I am trying very hard to have a good attitude about it since I am the one who chose to grow all of this hair.

and now will be working on my "gravy" inch. Anyway, I just consoled myself by saying "to whom much is given, much is required.. I love my hair length." But is the hair care industry biased towards short hair? Is this why we've run into so many SHS's?

Anyway, only complaint is this: my hair came out gorgeous with the black cellophane and all but it is rubbing off blue on stuff, including my hands.

What's up with this? My stylist said it should stop after my first at-home shampoo. I do not want to be hugging someone at church tomorrow and leaving them blue.

Yeah, those rinses can be the devil after your first application. It should be better the next time you wash.

But Congrats on your growth! (despite the extra $10 charge, that does suck!)

Glad you had a wonderful experience and congratulations on your hair goal! I am sure it's beautiful!

I think the hair industry is biased towards long hair and curly hair...just my humble opinion.

Congrats on reaching your hair goal!

The rinse should be fine after your first shampoo.

I agree with Hairlove. Many stylists seem to have problems with clients with long hair and curly hair. And if it's curly, long, and thick, just forget it. Some will just have a fit.

Supergirl, ITA. I took my son to get cornrows on Tuesday and one of the stylist said to me when are you going to get rid of all that hair. I said never and she laughed. I think they just want everyone to have short hair just to make their job easier. It might be worth it to look for a long hair salon.

Supergirl,

How long did it take for you to reach your goal?
What is your regimen?

Hi Tlmack,

If you click on my username, my regimen is listed in my profile along with products I use. Also, if you check the July 2003 Feature of the Month--it is there, perhaps in more detail. (but my products are different now)

I've been on hair boards for about 2 years now and when I joined, my hair was 22-23 inches. I was growing it out from an above the shoulder layered cut that I had in 1997--and then a few run- ins with SHS's. (scissor happy stylists) Hope that helps.

I think shorter hair is a bigger money maker for stylists than long hair so they make up the difference by charging for length.

It'll be a while before I go to a salon, if ever. My shrunken hair might fool them until they start washing it and see what they're really dealing with.

I find that JCPenney has a charge for everything. They will fee you to death. I stopped going there cause on top of all the numerous charges, they want a tip.

Congrats on reaching your goal

The only reason I can think of that would cause stylists to charge more for longer hair is that longer hair uses more products. 15 dollars seems a bit high for that, though.

Anyway, congrats! Must be a good feeling, nonetheless

SG I am so so so happy that you made goal!!!

You are my ULTIMATE hair idol and I can't wait until the day that I can have a head of hair like yours. I'm shamelessly sweating you right now, but I don't care!

Your hair is beautiful. I would gladly pay a little extra to help celebrate the hard work you've put in all these years, although I do agree that the haircare industry is biased.

Congrats girlie!

Congrats on reaching your goal, SG!

The extra fee kinda sucks, but it's worth it to have a good stylist that you know and trust

They are bias and they just want to make money. You deserve all the hair you want. Oh and JC Penny's charge for every little thing but why did it go from 5 to 15?

Good grief!

That extra charge is crazy but I actually think you got off easy because, back in your May pictures, you appear to be two inches or less away from waist-length. Imagine how much more she might have charged you if she made a distinction between mid-back and waist-length!
nono.gif

Your hair is beautiful and yes, hairdressers do discriminate against long hair. It's really nuts since many short cuts take much more work and time for them to style.

The stylist's charge is even more disturbing the more I think about it. Based on your pics, I understand that she is not defining mid-back as 'we' LHCF members do and as other people would. But, if she has a $15 charge for mid-back, what does she define as 'long hair' that requires the extra $5 charge when a client's hair is shorter than mid-back? Anything shorter than mid-back should be considered 'regular' length, thereby requiring no extra charge at all, IMO.

Anyhoo... CONGRATULATIONS on reaching your goal! You are fortunate to be so happy with your hairdresser.

I just figured out that it wasn't my stylist who added the $15 charge. It was the manager. She was at the front desk and she was the one wringing up my services. I knew she was taking a long time and she seemed to be looking for something in particular on the price sheet (that wasn't already on my service sheet). What a cow.
