To smooth or comb a 'Texturizer' is the question?

Hello Ladies,

I've been with LHCF since 04' but this is my first post. I know bad, bad girl. But I am in need of the expertise from some of the texturized heads on this here forum.

Now a brief summary of my hair. I recently did the big chop in feb 06' when I got feed up with the wave nuveau slowly tearing up my hair. I have THICK,THICK hair, always have but for two years I had the wave nuveau and all though it grew my hair very fast, it also left my hair extremely thin! So I decided I missed my THICK nerve racking hair but I didn't wanna give up my curls from the wave nuveau. (not jery curlish at all, was very natural lookin)

So with that I felt the compromise would be to texturize. My researching found this would be more healthier and the longivity of my volumuotous hair would remain and I could have the versatilty for straight or curly.

I will be texting with Affirm Fiberguard (was torn between Affrim or Mizani)but am unsure if I smooth it on with my hands or comb the relaxer threw? I don't wanna straighten my curl pattern. I have very coily hair that if it was just a little more silkier with less shrinkage would be a great wash and go. So not to distrub my curl pattern very much, just loosen and silken my hair which processing method should I use?

I smooth mines through,to me the smoothing process helps loosen the curl more but don't smooth to much cause it can lead to straight ends cause thats what I did erplexed so be careful...I have yet to try the comb through yet but I guess it depends on your hair.. hopefully someone else has more knowledge on the subject cause I'm still learning myself about text's....

Don't comb through - pulling the hair while relaxing is not a not idea. Smoothing with your fingers is better.

I've only smoothed a relaxer onto my hair, never combed it through.

Thanx Ivanay and Isis! I only asked about combing because I noticed that the Wash 'n' Wear relaxer uses a combing method for equal distribution and I also read a thread where someone mentioned Miss Jessies Salon (former Curve) used a combing method when doing a corrective silkner but used smoothing for the initial relaxer.

This is a good question. When I did the BC and I started texturizing, I used to comb the texturizer through the entire length of my hair as the instructions stated on the jar. I didn't experience any breakage and I had alot of curls. As my hair started to gain some length, I continued to do the entire length of my hair until I colored it. After coloring my hair, I experienced breakage due to overprocessing so I started to only do the new growth because I wanted to give my ends a break from all the chemicals. When texturizing now, I only apply it to the new growth but I do not smooth or comb.By not applying the texturizer through the entire length, I started to see thickness but my curls dont pop as much as before. However, if you are all natural and texturizing for the first time I suggest that you do the enitre length and after the first time you only process the new growth.

NEVER comb IMHO. The relaxer already breaks down the bonds of the hair, when the method of combing is added you are stretching the hair which leaves it with less elasticity coupled with the relaxer already doing it's job. In the long run to comb a relaxer through the new growth leaves it in a much weaker state than if you were to smooth allowing the relaxer to loosen the natural curl pattern of the hair.

So far it looks like the majority is to smooth which makes a lot of sense, but I wonder why Miss Jessies (which is way too far for me to visit)uses a comb for correctives. Hmm...?

I use the same affirm fiberguard mild in my hair. I apply with the back end of a rat tail comb (spatula like). I never comb just smooth over with fingers and i process 1/2's at a time so i don't overprocess. The longest I've processed my hair is 10 Min. I'm really happy with fiberguard.

Have you experience much Shedding with Fiberguard and how long have you been using Fiberguard. Im so excited to hear from someone using it. lol. Also how often do you use it. Sorry for all the questions but I would hate to have chopped off all that hair to only have it break off and be at square one, so im doing A LOT of research b4 taking this leap.

i only used a texturizer once. i used a wide tooth comb. i liked the way the roots-middle of my hair looked, but the ends were all thin. when combing its not a good idea to use a regular comb, it has to be wide tooth. i didnt try to smooth it on, 'cause the directions said to comb.

Has anyone had success with not smoothing the texturizer at all? Mainly just applying and letting the relaxer un-curl the hair? Will a relaxer loosen the curl without any manipulation?

QUEENIE mentioned in her post that she doesn't smooth at all and her hair has maintained a lot of texture, Shout out to QUEENIE!!!

I smoothed the last time I did my text-touch up and it came out well. However, I stretched for like 4 months. I'm worried that my curls and texture will start to fall over time because of overlapping or the relaxer just running through the hair while rinsing. Thinking of doing a touch-up by the end of the month.

Anyone have some info?
