I'm trying to understand how one can go weeks without combing her hair, and how one is styling if she's washing every single day.

Now, I've washed my hair and pulled it back wet before without combing, and the roots were a tangled, kinked mess when it was dry. Days of this would have left me with a dreaded scalp--and my hair is not *super* kinky to start with. I guess you work out the tangles and separate at the roots as much as you can with just your hands?

What about styling when you're not combing, or when you're washing daily? I am not that vain, but I do like to look reasonably pulled together. Because my hair is fine, even tho it's long a bun on me looks more a little turd at the base of my neck--so I'm not a fan. Sometimes I'll braid it wet before bed and wear a wavy pony the next day--but I still HAVE to comb my hair! I live by either roller sets or ponytails and wash once a week.

Please enlighten me on the specifics of how this works, and how you manage to look attractive and pulled together--office appropriate, etc--when you're not combing daily.

I cant comment on this because i dont get the concept of going days without detangling or combing either (Im a 4Z hair type) but...i thought that was hilarious! :lachen:

Maybe they mean that they don't use an actual comb. I don't use a comb very much either. I use my fingers and take my time to detangle my hair by separating each strand. I also use a conditioner with great slip!

I only use a comb when I wash my hair (2-3 xs a week), and I fingercomb my hair every morning. I wear my hair in braidouts because it was the best way for me to control the thick NG and make it blend with the rest of my hair. It took a while to get the braidout technique down without it coming out frizzy, puffy and fluffy. Now it's wavy and full, and I love the look!

Good Question! I have to pick my hair daily unless it is in a protective style, Itried to fingercomb and my hair was a mess. But it is good that this work for others!

Hey Blu,
I used to have that same problem...I don't comb my hair on a regular basis...the only time I comb is when I'm under the shower...the water and a good conditioner helps to detangle my hair...have you tried detangling under running water?...that usually get my hair pretty straight and free of tangles when dry...also get yourself a good creamy leave-in...I like giovanni direct...it's a really good detangler.

hmm... great question... i wash (co) daily and if i'm not bunning then i do a wash and go with a headband or scarf... looks pretty good either way...

as far as combs - i don't use a comb unless i've dried my hair... BUT i do use a denman brush to detangle right before i rinse the conditioner out... i mostly do that because it's just gotten to the stage where i can make a good bun so i want everything detangled to keep from having curlies popping up everywhere... when it gets longer, i doubt i'll need to do much denmaning (if that's a word)... but a lot of times, the stream of water and my fingers do a good enough job of detangling... HTH

i only comb my hair on wash day. i wash it about every 4 days. heres how-

1. add conditioner to 1" sized sections, comb and plait.
2. leave coditioner to do its Thang... then wash out. (leave hair in plaits)
3. towel dry alittle.
4. add leave in con. while making sure all ends are coiled (use comb to help).
5. wrap in scarf and go to sleep haha
6. the next morning my hair is dry... i undo the plaits and wear my fresh braidout.

i wear a baggy at night to keep moisture. some nights i make holes in the bag (this helps to keep the lenght in my curls)

i rarely comb my hair unless its time to perpare it for a wash.
i have style pics in my album. :-)

I dont' comb my hair either. I mostly wear my hair in twists and I do use a comb in the shower and then I condition and twist seperating w/ my finger. I dont' touch my hair again until I take out my twists. When my hair was relaxed I used to do the same thing w/ a bun..wash conditon, bun it up and that was that until I washed again.

Hi naturaline so I take it braidouts are your main style which just redo when you wash? we have similar routines except for the baggie part.....was wondering if I was the only natural trying to rock this style regularly

For the start of April, I have gone back to washing daily and not combing. Btw, I have short natural hair that's extremely tightly coiled. Combing wet hair daily would be too much for me unless I was wearing a stretched out style on dry hair.

Blu217, are you relaxed or natural? I remember back when I was relaxed I couldn't understand how ladies would wash daily and not comb their hair. I had to comb my hair in order for it to look smooth and halfway decent. Now that I'm natural, I have choosen to leave my hair alone since it's highly textured and really doesn't need to be comb. It takes on a shape of its own. I just fluff my hair with my fingers if I want to twirk the shape a bit.

I have a shower comb which I use to detangle when I cowash (daily). But I don't use a comb or brush any other time. I went through a period of time where I only finger combed while cowashing and I never touched a comb or brush. It worked fine, as long as I did it daily. My hair tangles easily and I can't stand having knots in my hair, so I wouldn't be comfortable going days with out detangling. When styling, which usually consists of putting my hair up or back, I just use my fingers and smooth with my hands. I am not attached to slicked back smooth ponytails. It's okay if the texture shows. :)

yeah i mainly wear my braidout... but i mix-it up alittle by using soft bands and making puffs etc- never combing the braidout. my styles album shows this :-)

asks as many questions as you like!

Thanks girl:) will def check out your album...I do have a couple of questions but dont want to hijack the thread so will message you if thats ok.

Raising my hand, I do. I rarely comb my hair unless it is for detangling. I have been told I am 4a/b natural hair type. I wash my hair with conditioner, shake and wring out the excess water. I add either a leave in, tiny amount of conditioner, mango butter, castor oil and set my hair with IC fantasia or S-Curl. My hair only gets tangled when I leave my twists in too long. Lately I have been using a brush to detangle my hair. I can't wait to use my denman brush. :)

I do what Doremie13 does with her hair and braidouts.

The trick is to comb the hair while it's still wet. Then one doesn't have to comb it again until the next wash day. I comb to detangle (wide tooth shower comb only) while rinsing out my conditioner under the shower. I comb my leave-in conditioner through also. After the hair is dry, there is no need to comb again - it's already combed and detangled. I just use my fingers until next wash day in 3 to 4 days.

I've learned on this board that some of the ladies comb after a rollerset has dried and that's the last time they comb until the next rollerset. They use fingerstyling during the week.

Hey Poohbear, I'm relaxed.

I've always been afraid to comb out my hair when it's really wet, like in the shower. I might try this to see what happens, but I'm not sure just my fingers would get the job done. And fingercombing daily... I guess it's my type of hair. I don't think I could get by like that--can we say "hot stringy mess?"

Thing is, I typically have a lot of body, especially at the roots, it doesn't really slick down smooth and my pulled-back hair never looks quite styled no matter what I try unless I'm freshly rollerset. My hair right now is recently relaxed, clean , glossed and clipped back with a wavy braid-out pony. And yet my roots and hair look texturized (I think it's my thickening shampoo, but still) and I look like I really need to do something with my head. Sigh. And it sounds like some of you almost never ever wear your hair styled out, just pulled back every single day! I love my hair, but in 33 years I still have yet to figure it out.

I'm gonna try some of these suggestions and see if I can achieve a better result. I can't fingercomb every day cause it's not thick enough for that, but I want to try the showercomb method.

blu.. what thickening shampoo are you using and how often? Does it strip your hair or is it safe?

Hmm. I alternate between Nioxin shampoo and conditioner and Pantene Full & Thick. Do either of those strip? They both make my hair feel great; I like the results I get.

I forgot to mention that the main reason why I can fingercomb my hair is because I've started using CON shampoo:love: and I learned how to make my hair lay down when it dries by tieing my scarf really, really tight. Otherwise, I get the poof! and the puff! and the boing!

When I was relaxed & brastrap i called myself not combing to save hairs but ended up with dreaded hair in some areas. I came home from school one weekend and my mom burst into tears. Anyway, she ended up cutting my hair up to the bottom of my shoulder blades all the while fussing to me about being lazy and combing my dayum hair. Now being natural I would not dream of not combing. I have learned my lesson my hair cannot handle it. I comb after my hair is wet or after I put condition/warm oil mix in it. It is easier for me and i have very few hairs in the comb.
