1. Don't get your braids too tight.
2. Moisturize when needed.
3. Keep scalp/hair as clean as possible.
4. Don't let your hair get matted underneath.
5. Protect the hair between the wig and your hair.
*don't use the combs- unless you plan on doing some serious hair whipping they're unnecessary. A few bobby pins and you're good to go and won't risk the breakage (and discomfort) they can cause
*For your moisturizer make sure it is something that absorbs completely so as not to lead to build up. (Braid sprays are made for this purpose and are a good example)
*As soon as you get home, take off the wig. This will help preserve the unit and get your scalp some air time.
yep, co-signing with what everyone else said! also if you exercise or use hair growth topical aids (like i use a sulfur mix) be sure to co-wash at least once a week so that build up doesn't occur. i suggest shampoo washing weekly. also can't emphasize the need to wear a protective scarf around your hairline -make sure it's satin so it does not rub your hairline down to bits or soak up its moisture. ditto, too, re: not using the combs - can also break hair off - just use hairpins they work fine oh yea, and be sure to dc weekly
I have been wearing half wigs for about 10 months now and will continue to wear wigs for another year. It's a great low manipulation hair style and I have got some serious growth. I put my own hair in piggyback braids and then I leave it alone for about a month. One thing I would suggest but I don't know if it applies to you is be careful with wetting your braids everyday because it can cause serious matting. You may be washing your hair every week or every 2 weeks and I don't think buildup will be that bad. I oil my scalp every night with hairdrenlin potion and put on plastic cap for GHE. I love this method, however I started to spray my braids everyday with a moisturising mix and when I took down my plaits after 3 weeks, I had extreme matting in some places. I took my time detangling and thank goodness I didn't hear any breakage. Also the nylon wig cap can cause breakage, a weave cap is what I started using per LadyPaniolo's suggestion and I love it alot.
