I know, I know . . . "don't do it" . . . but I wannna. *lol*

I actually got highlights once a few years ago . . . same day as a relaxer - thank you Jesus for protecting my hair follicles! :lachen:Anyways, I enjoyed having the color, but I remember that it was very drying on my hair. I'm thinking, though, that now I am an expert deep conditioner that I won't have such problems :look: (And yes, I will still continue to get relaxers.)

Am I deluding myself? Any tips to help make it easier on my hair?

Aww I thought you were going to tell us. I guess I'll have to wait for others to chime in as it does cross my mind from time to time.

When I was relaxed I got highlights a couple of times. What helped me most was finding a leave in that I could use daily. I also went low-heat. I would wrap my hair and let it airdry overnight. I would bump the ends but no heat on my length.

Steam treatments work wonders to keep relaxed/colored hair healthy. My favorite conditioner to keep hair in optimal health is Keracare Intensive restorative mask. Love that stuff. It's like preventive maintenance for all hair issues.

i dyed my hair a reddish brown and then black again and now im going to dye my bangs purple. the point of the story is my hair is doing just fine and i dont have problems with split ends or dryness. i did have problems with porosity but nothing a little clear rinsing and shea butter leave in couldnt fix. lifes short go for it

i've had highlights about 4 or 5 times with most recently being a month ago. i only had problems when i didn't like the color one time and then rehighlighted to correct (at the salon, of course). i had some shedding and breakage then. i always have my highlights done at an aveda salon. i also wasn't on a haircare journey - no deep conditioning at home, sometimes at the salon. this time around, i am mostly a diyer (because i moved to a different town) so when i went back home to get highlights, i was a little nervous. however, i plan to keep doing what i'm doing which is heat only on wash day and i used ao rosa mosqueta nourishing conditioner and fell in love. i had minimal shedding (and i do mean minimal - less than i typically get) on wash day. so, tips - deep conditioner, protect the ends and use less heat (if you use alot).

#1) Hot oil treatments will be your best friend
#2) Deep condition more times weekly since hair will tend to dry out more. (I do this 2x weekly)
#3) Limit direct heat on wet hair (try rollersetting and flat iron/blowdry after it has dried)
#4) Protein treatments - mandatory
#5) Try ammonia-free color... Aveda Salons are awesome and 80% plant based.
#6) Wait at least 2 weeks after a relaxer to color... also never color hair first and then relax.
#7) Use sulfate free shampoo. This will make your color last longer and will not dry out your hair.

1. Relax with a mild relaxer when you have highlights
2. relax less often if your hair can handle stretches
3. deep condition every week without fail, I use a light protein and mix it with a moisturizing conditioner for my weekly conditioning
4. about every 3 weeks I use a medium protein conditioner and then a heavy protein every six weeks, I follow these treatments with a moisturizing deep conditioner
5. In other words protein is a must when you are double processed
6. Use Aveda color, less harsh than a regular box color
7. moisturize and seal with oil
