Thinking of Buying a Steamer - Can I Still Henna??

I've read through several threads praising the benefits of steaming. I henna once a month - will the steaming process remove the henna from my hair?? Several ladies have commented that they have lost color as they steamed.

I'm hoping that someone that does both will chime in with some suggestions :yep:.

TIA!!

:bump: I'm bumping for you. I'm not sure about this and I wouldn't want to give you the wrong info, hopefully someone will answer. :)

Bumping for more responses. several of the sites that sell steamers speak of how it helps in the coloring process but they don't say specifically how you do it - color and then steam, steam and then color, steam with color on the hair. Who knows??

I steam in my henna and I love the results. I have not found that steaming makes my color fade.

So steam away!

I steam on a regular, and I can't see any difference in my hair color. Henna is - different - from most hair colors in how it acts though. Most hair colors just 'deposit' color particles onto the strand, while henna actually bonds with the hair, as far as I know - so it's much harder to 'wash' it out, if not close to impossible.

OP: Thank you for asking this. I am 6 months natural and protective styling with kinky twists until the end of the semsester. At that time, I have ALL KINDS OF PLANS for Henna'ing and steaming on a weekly basis. This was a great question. Thanks to all who responded as well.

Please come back and let us know how your experience was.

ETA: Oh, I forgot to add that I saw some nice steamers on ebay for like $134 including shipping. They were the table-top ones but had good reviews. This is the one I have my eye on. Check em' out.

:look: Depending on your hair, henna every week is very likely to not be the business. Henna leaves an initial 'coating' on your hair, and if you overlap too soon, the layer will thicken, and your hair will start tripping. You might not deal with this, but I always give fair warnings when I see people talk about henna'ing weekly.

Now, if you are doing a henna 'gloss' (basically a tablespoon of henna in a buttload of conditioner) - you might be able to do those weekly, and just do a 'full' henna once a month, or so.

I would think the steaming would accelerate the Henna treatments bc originally steamers were used to process colour treatments?

If anyone else can chime in on this point that would be great....

Sorry for the confusion. I meant I'll be steaming on a weekly basis (as part of my DC's).... not using henna on a weekly basis. I should have been more clear.

For traditional color treatments, steam would 'open' the cuticles of the hair, and allow the color to deposit deeper/better - so that makes sense.

If you steam while henna'ing.... hrmmmm.

Okay, henna is a plant-product, and it releases its dye as it heats up. So, if you have henna on your head, and you are under a steamer, it should shorten the amount of time you have to leave it on, and it might provide a deeper color deposit.

The only risk I see would be if you stayed under too long (not likely!) and the henna dries out - that would be a pain in the patootie to rinse out.

Oh, no problem at all! I thought that might have been what you meant - but better safe than sorry, ya know? I'd feel somekindaway if you posted 3 months from now wondering why your hair was breaking off and tripping, ya know? :lachen:
