I'm trying something different today.....I'm going to deep condition with heat then shampoo with a sulfate and do a protein treatment :look:

I plan to apply the nourish and shine to wet hair then blow out then apply SM curl butter to do Bantu knots. I bought a hair oil but don't remember the name and I'm under the dryer now but I plan to apply it to my scalp. Wish me luck :lol:

Update: Didn't come out too bad....My Bantu knot technique is piss poor so that did me in :(

Funny, I've been oiling my hair daily or every other day, my hair has been loving it:yep:

Sometimes I'll even top it with my heavy butter mix.

ETA: I've been oiling the length of my hair, my oily skin doesn't need much help doing what it does:giggle:

Did my moisturize and seal reggie last night, misted my hair with water, applied my oil blend, then decided to switch it up and seal with straight castor oil and my hair felt so awesome, goes to show the heavier/richer the better when it comes to my porous strands.

Trying to start a personal no heat challenge, slightly OT so this might become another thread but I've noticed that the magic formula for 4b ladies with 20in+ is no heat, low manipulation, finger detangling and twist/braid outs to style, if a blowdryer is used its using the tension method and not the comb attachment. I'm so used to throughly detangling my hair that I'm still coming to terms with this, I also dread the super long finger detangling sessions but I'm ready to up my length retention so I'll have to suck it up.

I also want to find out if my hair is naturally HiPo or if its because of my over use of the blowdryer that my strands are porous.

I just repurchased the SM HiPo masque and I'm giving the SM manuka honey one a whirl as well, I need to purchase the big jug of aloe vera juice, my hair loves that stuff.

I'm also trying to find the right clay wash recipe for my HiPo hair that will provide the clean yet moisturized result so please let me know if yall have any recs!
 
I've been lurking in this thread for a while now.

I think I am normal to hi-po because my hair is everything @BlackMasterPiece described in her post on this thread's first page. I know for sure my hair loves protein, AVJ, coconut oil, avocado oil, etc, does not take a long time to take in moisture but dries fairly normal to very quickly. Everything that low-po hair hates, my hair loves.

I need to be in here for a while I think.
 
I think I've finally have a routine to help me seal in moisture :yay:. The first thing I did is went back to applying my protein conditioner on dry dirty hair. My hair seems to accept the protein better since the water isn't blocking my hair strands.

So for my sealing, I made a watered down version of kimmaytube leave in and I applied it while I was in the shower. I then let it set for 15 min with a shower cap. I read on a blog that to get moisture in the hair it takes 15 min for the water to absorb. After 15 min, I applied my favorite gel which is super wet gel then twisted my hair. I then used kimmaytube's L2 stretch which is roll the twist on magnetic rollers then sitting under a dryer to dry. My hair finally felt moisturized and it was nicely stretched so I could install my loose twist. I'm very happy with my hair. I think my hair needs indirect heat and it needs to be stretched. I eliminated heavy butters, oils, and grease which usually leaves my hair greasy and dry. I thought I needed to heavy seal but I've discovered I only needed a leave in and gel. Who knew! :grin:

Thanks for sharing! This is affirming: I, too, now only need leave-in applied to soaking wet hair and gel in order to have moisture for a week+.

I every-now-and-then sit under a standing steamer to steam in my DC. Or I'll on very rare occasions use it to soften my hair for detangling. I invested in the standing steamer back when I didn't have my protein-moisture balance under control and just couldn't seem to get moisture into my hair. Back then, steaming was a life saver! Now, shower steam is all I really need.

Do you think you need to steam your hair? For what reason(s)?

They steamed me on Saturday with a leave-in and all remaining tangles (minor though they were) melted away. That could just be due to the unbelievable skills of the lady who washed/conditioned/detangled my hair, though.
I don't own a steamer, not even for clothes & I recall seeing someone on YouTube use a clothes steamer but that seems dangerous.

I know protein can be scary because you can get to the point where you have too much protein which can lead to breakage ( I haven't yet but I hear you can :p) but if you're really high porosity you are so far from that point (just judging by the products you are using). I recommend reading http://science-yhairblog.blogspot.com/2015/10/protein-101-lots-of-basic-information.html & this http://science-yhairblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/mysteries-of-hydrolyzed-proteins.html to figure out which hydrolyzed protein might work best for you. My favorites are hydrolyzed keratin & collagen. Try to make sure your hydrolyzed proteins are within the first 5 ingredients.

I know you're on a no buy but when you get the chance I highly recommend starting with Komaza Protein Strengthener. I won't recommend aphogee 2 step because it stinks, and you have to get your hair hard which can really put you off from wanting to use it again. If you do decide to do a protein treatment don't do a long DC session you'll be taking two steps backwards, so do a short one . Even then only if you honestly feel like you need it! Not because people say you should. I personally just follow up with a moisturizing rinse out usually some CJ so I can finger detangle.

This post is very interesting. It may explain why very long deep conditioning treatments have never been Amazing for me.
Can you explain more about negative impacts of long deep conditioning sessions for high porosity and why protein treatments may be better for us?
 
Sure,sorry for my late response! Note this is all from my understanding and experience and what works for me might not work for someone else.

The reason we deep condition is to open up the cuticle to allow water and a few ingredients that can penetrate the hair in. This is benefical for low porosity hair because they have cuticles that are stubborn so deep conditioning with heat forces those cuticles to open up and allow moisture to seep in slowly. After rinsing the conditioner their cuticles force themselves shut again sealing all of the moisture in. Which is why they can go days without having to re moisturize.

On the flip side high porosity hair has cuticles that open easily, Which isn't a bad thing, the problem is our we are also missing cuticles. If we follow the lo porosity method and deep condition with heat it will force our cuticles to open( the same cuticles that didn't need help opening in the first place) allowing moisture to seep in quickly. After rinsing however since we are still missing cuticles the moisture can't be sealed in and in a matter of minutes to hours our hair is dry and it's as if we never deep conditioned in the first place.

This is where protein comes in, it fills in the missing cuticles so that the moisture stays in. If your cuticles do not close all the work you did gets wiped right out. Doing a deep condition of the normal 10-30 minutes then following with a protein treatment and rinsing won't have a negative impact. However deep conditioning for too long can cause hygral fatigue, which weakens your hair strands which cause them to break, split ect. Also doing a protein treatment, rinsing then deep conditioning and rinsing again can put you right back where you started because hydrolyzed proteins are water soluble. They don't stick to your hair like silicones do which is why anytime I run my hair under water I add protein back. Also every protein is not the same, some penetrate the hair while others form a film on top of the hair which might result in hair that feels too hard so try as many as you can.

Hmm I've been looking at rice water rinses but I don't want to lengthen my wash day, think I might do a rice water, clay mix and try it that way. Anyone try rice water yet?
 
@kodochax so since we are high porosity then should we DC without heat? I've recently been DCin without heat and I think it's slightly helping Also should the protein conditioner or treatment be applied after a moisture DC? I've always been told to use protein first then follow up with a moisturizing DC. Or do you mean if you apply a protein treatment to follow up with a moisturizing DC but only leave it in at max 30 min. If the protein is washed away then do you apply a conditioner with protein afterwards or apply a leave in that has protein in it to fill the gaps?

Once I do a Konaza protein treatment, my hair feels extremely coated . . . as if with something rubbery. My hair is harder to weigh down (I like weighing it down, because it grows out and is very dense).

I've noticed that most of my products contain protein. Do you think it's okay to continue DCing with a balancing DC (aims to maintain moisture-protein balance) on the days and weeks after the Komaza treatment?

If not, what protein-free DC do you recommend? I don't think I have one anymore!

I don't experiment much and I'm not hi-po @YvetteWithJoy but I know that APB has some delicious protein-free DCs. The Ultra Conditioning Soufflé is my favourite.

I recommend following up with a very slippery conditioner that doubles as a leave in that way you only rinse once. Or you can take it one step further and mix pure hydrolyzed protein in a conditioner that you can leave in. So you never have to rinse away the protein. If you are using something similar to komaza you need to follow up with a rinse out conditioner because this conditioner might leave a film on your hair. If the protein is washed away then do you apply a conditioner with protein afterwards or apply a leave in that has protein in it to fill the gaps? I'd apply a leave in that has protein to fill in the gaps, however not any just any leave in you would need to find one with a good balance of moisture & protein because you might apply too much or too little or the type of protein might not work for your hair . For high porosity hair I'd recommend any of the scenarios to keep as much protein in your hair as possible if you're not into a bit of diy
1) Moisturizing deep conditioner ---> Protein treatment----> Rinse out conditioner /leave in conditioner
2) Protein treatment----> rinse out conditioner/leave in conditioner
3) Moisturizing protein treatment(Add protein to your favorite moisturizing conditioner) ----> rinse out conditioner/leave in conditioner


If you don't mind a little bit of DIY I highly suggest buying hydrolyzed keratin(it's the only one I've tried so far going to test collagen later) and adding that to your favorite leave in/rinse out conditioner. So as an example this is what I do on wash day.
1)Clay
2) Mix hydrolyzed keratin 0.2 oz with 2.5oz of jessicurl too shea and apply that all over.
3)Twist it up leave a baggy on for 20 minutes take it off and my wash day is done. I usually let my hair air dry and style it later on/the next day.

One thing I would like to add if that if you feel like your hair needs more protein don't buy these expensive protein treatments. I personally got 2 uses out of a bottle of Komaza which costs $16. I went out and bought 1lb of hydrolyzed keratin for about $30 after shipping and since I only need to use 0.2 oz it should last me around 80 uses. I bought it last year nov-dec and I still haven't gotten through the first bottle. The best thing you can do is experiment we all have varying amount of cuticles so you may need more or less protein than I do. Listen to your hair and if you think you do everything right on wash day and your hair isn't responding the way it should make some tweaks.

Finally getting around to trimming my hair, I last trimmed end of August I think so I'm very much overdue. Prepooing with coconut oil, babassu oil & olive oil while I trim, I want to see if it'll make a difference on wash day.
 
I agree with adding your own protein to your treatments.

I use Neutral protein Filler versus Komaza (Komaza is bomb though) and it works well and is more cost effective.

I am thinking of trying out a modified version of the old Joico 17 minute miracle.

I too have been looking at Kimmay's Videos and I have been trying out some of her techniques. I LOVE that she keeps things simple, doesn't deviate too much from her "regimen", and all of her products you can buy online on her site!

I definitely have to give her kudos.

I am going to try the L2 stretch because I think that would work well on my hair as well. I find I retain more length and get less tangles when I use a little heat. Under the dryer will be nice for me instead of blow drying it, which can be more harsh. :yep:
 
Hope everyones summer is going well thus far!:wave: I'm getting several comments that my hair has grown which is nice, but I know I have to trim my ends so its bittersweet:ohwell:

Ladies I need to re-up on my Aloe, have you found difference between AVJ AVG or whole leaf? I used lily of the earth AVG in the past and my hair loved it but I saw the other versions on amazon and it made me wonder...

Have any HiPo ladies tried the eco styler black castor and flaxseed gel?
 
Bump: I've added Colorful Neutral Protein Filler to my regimen, just to try it out. I already use Joico Moisture Recovery Balm as a dc. It has hydrolized keratin, but acts very moisturizing for my hair. I'm using Redken Anti Snap leave in during the week as well.
