The secret to my new found hair success....Simplicity!

Hi! I haven't been here for awhile because I have discovered my Holy Grail of haircare, and it is as the title of the thread stated, simplicity. I remember reading on here what other women said about simplifying their routine is what helped them, but the product junkie in me just couldn't comply. My discovery was more of an accident than anything I planned. I never would have even thought to use one of the products if I hadn't been forced to stop using my usual shampoo.

Awhile ago, I had developed a SEVERE reaction to a hair dye by Aubrey Organics. When I say severe I mean SEVERE. My face had swollen to the point where I could not open my eyes. My face burned, the skin on my ears would blister, weep, and peel; and I couldn't lay down flat or the symptoms would get worse. The allergic reaction was so severe that after the swelling portion on my neck went down, my skin in that area lost it's pigmentation. It took months for my correct color to return. Strangely enough it seemed as though the product was still in my system and the reaction would occasionally return even though I no longer used the product, it was still partially on my hair.

After my reaction to the Aubrey Organics, my scalp became sensitive to Elucence shampoo. Elucence was my favorite shampoo EVER. When I used the Elucence my scalp would itch severely. I knew I needed a really gentle product that was hypoallergenic so I bought the Johnson's Head to Toe baby bath.

When I used the Johnson's, I was surprised at how soft my hair felt while washing it. I figured that was just a fluke and it would harden as usual after it dried. I knew I needed to condition so I used the Hello Hydration that I had already switched to. When I got out of the shower I looked in the mirror and my hair was shiny and it felt very soft to the touch. What really surprised me was the way it dried. It didn't draw up, it was soft, and still shiny, and I got very little breakage. I did not apply any other products to my hair.

I decided to continue using the Johnson's and Clairol combo and continued to get the same results. When I finally used another shampoo, the Giovanni Triple Tea Treat, my hair was harder than when I used the Johnson's. The product junkie in me didn't want to believe that anything so cheap and simple could make such a HUGE difference in my hair, but my hands, my eyes, and my comb made me a believer.

My search is over, and I am so happy that what I found at the end of my hair care product search rainbow was something very inexpensive and easy to find. I am no longer even tempted to try the latest, greatest thing on the market for hair. The latest, greatest thing for my hair is already here.

Congrats on you finding a simple regimen that works for you!

I totally agree w/ you...When I first began my regimen was so complex...I will admit that now it's not perfect but it's way more simpler than when I first started and my hair is loving me for it. Also I noticed that as my regimen got simpler my pockets weren't as empty as they were in the beginning.

Im sorry to hear about that severe allergic reaction, it sounded so painful -- I can barely deal with a small burn, dont know how I would've handled all that. Im happy that things have improved significantly. thanks for sharing your hairstory or a lot of it anyway.

I always hear old/ older/ wise veteran members (:spinning: ) say that simplicity is key or simplicity is better. All you have to do is look at their hair and progress to see that they know what they are talking about. KISS is somethin Im still working on but Im getting closer I think.

Wow, your story really touched me and I surely will be mindfull when trying new products. I always read that you should do a strand test or a skin test before you start anything new but I never do. From now on, I will. That was some reaction but I'm glad you recoverd and it led to new discoveries!! For you and all those who read this thread.

Geesh that sounds horrible to have to have gone through! I like things simple too, although I DONT really keep it that way! I think after that I would use all baby stuff too! :yep: you know they are gentle and very hypoallergenic!

Wow, seems that things are turning around. What an awful thing to go through and I am glad that the worst is over. I also am glad that you have found a cheepie that you can actually use on a reg. basis as I am still looking for one....

Congratulations! Your reasoning is soo right. If it's gentle enough for a baby, then it's gotta be gentle enough for your use, and above all, it's usually NON-Drying.

I did the same thing when it comes to my skin care, Baby Magic's Lavender & Chamomile Milk bath; forehead to toe.

I am sad that you had such a horrible reaction. Who would think anyone would react from an Aubrey Organic product, wow. I agree with you though, simplicity is the best route in my opinion as well. Due to a finger injury I haven't been able to do all that I usually do to my own hair and it's been growing more. I just had a relaxer on May 23rd and am almost in desperate need of another one now because of crazy new growth. I think this has happened because my regimen has been cut down in half. Now that my finger is just about healed I am continuing this simple regime for the rest of the summer and possible remainder of the year.

I wish you continued success :)

Good lord that is horrible. Glad that you found something that works for you. The next time you try something you should do a strand test to see if you have a reaction to the chemicals. Poor baby

I'm glad that you recovered so well - that's so scary!!

I think that the Johnsons has a different pH than most shampoos - it's *thinks* more alkaline, I think, so that it won't burn the baby's eyes? That might be part of why your hair is responding so well to it....

So glad to know you are recovered from such an aweful experience. Thanks for sharing your KISS regimen. It took me a minute on this board to figure out all I had to do to get healthy hair was --- waaaay less than I was. . . LOL!

sorry to hear it. . . I had a similar reaction to creme of nature. but im happy u found your stuff. . . I have finally found my moisturizing leave ins. . . I just get happy that when I go to the store I know exactly what to get.
