The Haircolor Support Thread

Okay, I did a search and couldn't find a thread (search timed out):

I'm trying to get a midnight black blue. I want it to bling so bad that it will have blue sheen when it hits light.

I couldn't find the color I wanted, and I have midnight black manic panic. I purchased a bright blue semi permanent and I have a clear gloss. I plan on mixing all three to make a rich blue black with lots of bling... and then BKT. I'll just let the color build up over time as I'll refresh it every "wash" day.

Has anyone ever mixed semi permanents to get the colors they wanted?

Bumping for you....

As an aside:

I had a bad experience with Manic Panic while relaxed.

Dried my hair out and ran everyday for WEEKS...with no color payoff.

I blogged about it in detail. I've steered clear of this brand ever since.

No I haven't mixed semis before...but I am currently refreshing my semi perm red every month! The first time around went well, I'm going to do it again, this week. I have highlights, but wanted a red color, and my stylist said this was the best way to preserve my hair. What products will you use once you color your hair, to help prolong your color.

Redken Shades EQ- conditioning demi-permanent hair color that will leave your hair soft and super shiny. They have a bunch of shades and there was a website with different color formula's for certain effects. I have to find it, but I know for a fact if you mix Orchid and Onyx together, or Onyx and Blue Kicker together, or even just Onyx alone, you'll get that super shiny blue black with a blue sheen effect you're looking for :yep:

@ littlegoldenlamb: I usually mix my semi-permanents with deep conditioner and process process process... but thanks for the tip; i'll look out for that. The black rinsed out quickly too but my permanent colors do that as well, so I just want to use up my stash.

@backtorelaxed: Ooooh that sounds nice. I plan to BKT so I will maintain my haircolor with lots of conditioner and DC. There's no chemicals in the semi permanent color, but upping my moisture regimen and refreshing the color should help.

@outspoken: I never knew Redken had colors. Are they supershiny like cellphane? I have yet to use those either. I will look those colors up now and see about adding them to my stash. :yep: I like to go between blue black and intense brownish red. I once saw a lady with deep rich black hair. She had a bright red rinse on it and when it hit the light it was electrifying... I will probably try to create that in the summer

Theyre not like cellophanes because they are demi-permanent; so not harsh like permanent colors but last way longer than semi-permanent colors. Was the woman's hair naturally black and then she added a red rinse on top? You could always make your hair deep, rich black first than do a red rinse over it in a week or two...but dont take my word for it! The way you describe that woman's hair sounds like an incredible combo.

I've found IN MY EXPERIENCE, that when I mix rinses or colors in general with conditioner, it doesnt take as well or process as well, hence the color washing out quickly or not coming out as vibrant as it should. Thats because moisturizing conditioners can cause the unstable color molecules to wash out...so to mix those two together is like asking for the color to not last. I used to always wonder why when I was at the salon and would get a rinse, they refused to give me a deep conditioner after the service; that was because the rinse wouldnt be as vibrant and easily wash out.
Dont get me wrong; you can definitely deep condition your hair before or after you color (I choose to do it after, but I dont leave it in for TOO long and I don't use heat) but I think you'd be happier with the results if you didnt mix them. :) HTH!

i 100% agree with the above. last year, i tried rinsing a clairol jazzing rinse with a deep conditioner. the color didn't last as long as a full-strength rinse would. i think mixing conditioner and color is fine for a quick color touch-up, but any time you add to the color, you dilute it, and reduce the amount of time the color will last. deep conditioning is fine, as long as it's either before the color service, or after, not inbetween :yep:
