A little off the subject but since I have you all here. I have always had a blow dry and curl. Beautiful thick hair. My hairdresser has plenty of long hair clients but she pretty much does the same thing all day.No Domincan Salons to try in Philly that I know of. I would love to at least try a roller set. Always had the fear of Grandma Hair. Is it really worth finding someone to rollerset?

Obviously, my answer is a resounding yes.

Wrapping after the set and using large rollers helps avoid the grandma look.

Nothing like the body and bounce you get from a rollerset IMO.

Thanks
Alright. I'll look into it. I do have swing this way though. I just want to were my hair out more often and this might be a safer way to go. Do you do your own Tracy?

I know that's right! I got my first roller wrap back in '97 or '98 and I've been wearing it ever since! My hair is SOOO bouncy and shiny when I get a roller wrap. Occasionally, I don't wrap my hair after removing the rollers so I have that curly look. I used to be afraid of the "grandma look" too but my hairdresser convinced me that it won't look that way. She was right. It's a fabulous style and I highly recommend it.

I do CNG.

I wash my hair too often and am too addicted to the way my hair looks with a rollerset to NOT do them myself.

I'm sure you're bouncin' and behavin'

but there is NOTHING like the bounce of a rollerset. Nothing. I promise you.

Tracy- where did you go in Corona, Did you ever try Julie's on 103rd and Roosevelt? I used to go to Marisella's but then she went back to DR and then I started at Julie's. Yeah now and days you don't have to get it blowdried but back then you didn't have a choice (or maybe that was because I was a kid

Tracy well said girl!...I too went to a well known AA salon back in my early teens thinking I would love my results but in all actuality I thought it came out dry looking and rough and thought it was because of the "type of hair I had. ]

I always thought the same thing about my hair until I came to this board. I told my friend which I believe is 3a/b that I wanted to try out dominican salons because I heard they were good. she ended up beating me to it and has had her hair done by them at least 3 times already. she always had nice hair but they totally transformed her hair. the first time she did her hair there I was like

her hair was looking nice, thick, and most importantly healthy and full of bounce. I didn't know her hair had that potential. (she got a rollar set then a wrap. )she says she loves them now and the best part about it is that they don't load her hair up with greese and other products when they are done.
In honesty I can't wait till after I get my relaxer in about 2 weeks to try them out!
not to mention when I went into the salon and I asked her my questions she answered very politely. afterwards she was like don't worry mamie, I will make your hair very healthy like hers and she pointed to a girl she'd just finished with thick, beautiful hair.

I walked into an AA salon near by the same day to compare prices and when I saw her running that steaming hot iron through the girls hair

I walked right back out. without even bothering to ask her the prices.

oh yeah, Tracy I'm seriously considering going to the dominican salon every other week. the other week washing my hair maybe 2-3 time.
isn't your routine something like that and you've had no problems?

This is a facinating discussion. I'm reading from the vantage point of an African-American from Ohio not of Caribbean decent who has not had the opportunity to visit a Caribbean/Dominican salon. I've heard a lot of good things about their services.

It sounds like there are some useful and healthful things that the AA salons could employ. Perhaps there's a publication that details these blowdrying techniques that AA beauticians could access.

I am very curious to see the benefits of the Caribbean services for the more African hair types (4a/4b?.) Maybe I missed it in someones thread but does anyone have pictures with this hair type so I can see the differences?

It would also be nice to benefit from the lower prices. I'll put that on my list of things to do when I visit NYC.

I have 4a hair and these salons have changed the overall health of my hair. There is an article recently in a Black Hair magazine that discusses what is done...do a search on it..it was discussed here,

forgive me but the article refers to Blowouts as BJ's (you get it) search for that but the full word.

I frequent the Dominican Salon. I got my layers done there and always get my trims there. They actually trim my layers!!! I usually get a roller set and have them blow my roots and wrap. I don't have them put any oil in my hair..no oil sheen...nothing. It tends to weigh my hair done. My hair produces enough oil as it is.

Awwww thank you so much!!! I really swear by the roller sets...I hated doing them when I was younger (13+) cause of the grandma look but since learning how to wrap my hair plus the blow out it's like I have an entirely different head of hair....its made a WoRLD of DIfference

Thankyouthankyou so much!

for real........ also, offthechain- Definitely let us know when you go to the Dom. salon.....I'd love to know how you lked or disliked it.

I was thinking of putting my relaxer next week, but I changed my mind. I'm going in next saturady and I let her blow dry my roots. I'm keeping my fingers crossed cause next saturday I will be 10 weeks post.

I think I'll keep my promise to myself after all and relax at 12 weeks.

I'm gonna creep into the thread, then creep out...lol..
I always smile whenever I read the threads on the Dominican Blowout or people ordering online for Dominican conditioners/products. I didn't realize how fortunate I am to be able just to walk two block to get a wash and set or blowout if the roots get to be too much to handle or cross the street to pick out oils or Dominican conditioners.

I think going to a Dominican Salon has always been beneficial to my hair. I now think back and realize when I stopped going..is when my hair didn't look it's best or thrive. With the hair knowledge that I have gotten from this board and researching in conjunction with going to my Dominican salon...my hair is once again getting better and better. I also think it's a matter of finding the right place and the right relationship with the stylist. If my stylist sees Mo's neck scrunch up...she knows to back up with the heat...and it's been no problem. /images/graemlins/up.gif

And yes, those ovens that AA's use....smoky and scary...
my hair fries whenever they have been used on my head..and it will never touch my hair...again...
